Getting Erin on the move
Sunday's session and beyond:
"Don't be afraid"
Steve Miller leads Sunday's session.
It surprised me [I'm Steve] that more than any other command in the Bible, “Don’t be afraid” is the biggie. That’s the command that shows up most of all.
More than “love God” (Romans 7:22).
More than “care for your orphans and widows” (Jeremiah 49:11).
More than “don’t wear polyester” (Leviticus 19:19, paraphrased).Scripture
2 Timothy 1:17
God gave us his Spirit. And the Spirit doesn’t make us weak and fearful. Instead, the Spirit gives us power and love. He helps us control ourselves.
Isaiah 41:10
So don’t worry, because I am with you.
Don’t be afraid, because I am your God.
I will make you strong and will help you;
I will support you with my right hand that saves you.
Philippians 4:6-7
Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.
Exodus 14:14
The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.
Homework for the subconscious
Think about scenes in the Bible where "Don't be afraid" shows up.
Think about fears you've had and how you felt God responded, or didn't respond.
NEXT SERIESA Month to Remember
5.3. Jim Buffington. My favorite human acquaintance. The story of the friendship between Jonathan and David or Paul and Timothy. The session leader and class members reflect on someone dear to them (other than a spouse; the spouse goes without saying is the favorite, or better be).
2 Timothy 1:3-5; 4:6-9
5.10 (Mother's Day). Steve Miller. A mother I respect. The story of how Jochebed saved her baby Moses, or how Rachel protected Jacob (though “respect” is a stretch there). Talk about the traits we love to see in a mom.
Exodus 2:1-10; Proverbs 31:25-30
5.17. Keith Larkin. Kids I know and love. With school graduations going on, we talk about the kids in our life. We start with the story of the disciples trying to drive children away from Jesus. We talk about what a bachelor like Jesus might have seen in the kids. And we talk about what endears kids to us and why we have an irrational love for them no matter what.
Psalm 127:3-5
5.24 (Memorial Day). Terry Bahadur. Dead but not forgotten. Start with the Bible passage of Paul, “We want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope” (1 Thess 4:13). We talk about some of the people we know who have died and what they mean to us, and about our hope of a reunion.
1 Thess 4:13-18

Getting Erin on the move
Erin Cottrell is moving from Lawrence to Olathe on Memorial Day Weekend.
I asked her what kind of horsepower she had. She said the only ones doing the heavy lifting are her, Keith, and her step-father.
That won't do.
Terry Bahadur and I have added Saturday, May 23 to our calendars. We're going to make a memory by moving Erin.
In case any in the class would like to help, I'll keep you posted about the time.
When I asked Erin if there's anything extra we can do, she said:
What will be helpful, too, is if any of these folks have trucks or SUV's. We are thinking we would rent a moving truck - but the size and cost could be diminished if there are other vehicles we can use. We will not have any really BIG items, necessarily (no sofas or recliners, etc.)
I have a minivan. All the back seats come out.
Beginning Sunday, if not sooner, we will be watching 3 dogs for 10 days. Two belong to my son. He and his wife will be in Bora Bora, celebrating completion of his master's program. When I finished my master's degree, I went to Wynne, Arkansas.
