-The contagious commitment and excitement that our Shared Bread volunteers show every week, making sure we not only serve a meal, but that our guests experience hospitality.
-Hearing from other participants on the Baja Mission trip that they were moved by how we treat each other, and that the ways we talk about Jesus have inspired them to renewed connection to God.
-How beautiful it was to watch volunteers step up into significant leadership for VBS, especially two of our high school youth who served as Co-Directors for the week. Our willingness to trust new, young leaders was a blessing, as was the incredible leadership they brought. The love of God was evident everywhere in the midst.
-The joy of our Thursday Bible study in meeting together today, after several weeks off. Our time away made it clearer to see how much we gain from time together, studying scripture!
Perhaps you have seen additional ways and places that the Holy Spirit is active in our midst this summer. I hope you'll take a moment to reflect, and then share the good news with someone else. (I'd love to hear about it, too!)

Mark 4:35-41
"Peace. Be Still."
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Scripture Text for Mark 4:35 That day, when evening had come, Yeshua said to them, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” 36 So, leaving the crowd behind, they took him just as he was, in the boat; and there were other boats with him. 37 A furious windstorm arose, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was close to being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern on a cushion, asleep. They woke him and said to him, “Rabbi, doesn’t it matter to you that we’re about to be killed?” 39 He awoke, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind subsided, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you no trust even now?” 41 But they were terrified and asked each other, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the waves obey him?”
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Mark 4:35-41
Verse 35
[35] And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.
Matthew 8:23; Luke 8:22.
Verse 36
[36] And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
They take him as he was in the vessel — They carried him immediately in the same vessel from which he had been preaching to the people.
Verse 38
[38] And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
On the pillow — So we translate it, for want of a proper English expression, for that particular part of the vessel near the rudder, on which he lay.
Verse 39
[39] And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Peace — Cease thy tossing: Be still - Cease thy roaring; literally, Be thou gagged.

SUNDAY ANOTHER POT-LUCK! Everyone is always welcome at these monthly luncheons following Sunday Worship, approximately at noon. Just bring a dish to the kitchen, join in the line selecting your favorite foods, sit down with a friend or stranger, enjoy this visit, have desert and it all will be followed by our young people showing photos and telling about their recent mission trip to Baja California, Mexico. It will be fun for all and all are invited. Didn't bring a dish? Come anyway and next time make up for it. We always seem to have plenty left over.
Last Sunday, as Pastor Molly Vetter spoke of Jesus being baptized by John in the Jordan river and God saying He is well pleased, I felt the same way. That afternoon we had a street block party in Hermosa Beach for my son celebrating his 70th birthday. There were over eighty neighbors, friends and relatives there and I, indeed, was well pleased and very proud. Isn't it great that Pastor Molly so often preaches about scripture in ways that are pertinent to our personal lives? I am proud of her, our staff, our church and our congregation. I hope you are too. (Just imagine having a 70 year old son!)
Visiting with Joe Zeiler after VBS, Vacation Bible School, he was saying how wonderful it had been and he said his entire career as a teacher, principal, etc. had been to lead youngsters and here in this case the leaders were young Grace Martens and Bryan Hwang and all he had to do was follow their orders. How life turns around sometimes. Thank you, God, for all these wonderful young leaders at our church. As Pastor Molly says, “May it be so.”
I watched people bringing boxes and bags of stuff to store in the basement beneath our Choir Room for the fall Rummage Sale. In talking with some women who operate this huge activity, they said they like to sort it out early and appreciate your donations now. If too much comes in at the last minute it makes their work even more difficult. They sort, classify it with other donations of the same ilk, hang it up and get ready for the big deal. You'll help by donating now, either Sundays or at the office.

On August 25 at 6:30, our United Methodist Women gather for their yearlyAll-Circle Potluck, in Epworth Lounge. As part of the evening, they hear about and offer support for community programs. This year, Nina Dooley will talk about her work with the nonprofit LINC Housing based in Long
Beach that builds and owns affordable apartments. LINC’s Welcome Home program provides basic housewares for residents who arrive with very few possessions and need support to thrive independently. The new residents will have been living on the street. They will be moving into empty apartments and may need a little help getting settled. Will you help UMW support LINC?
Your donation of new items provides bedding, kitchen, and bath essentials to make their new apartments truly a
“home,” giving them a foundation for positive transformation.

The band Hillsong United was formed in 1998 from close friends within the Hillsong youth ministry (called “Powerhouse Youth”). So many songs were being written within the youth ministry that it was suggested they make an album. The songs One and Everyday were recorded and released with the annual Hillsong worship album in 1999. They both achieved gold sales status in Australia, and the band has gone on to win five Dove Awards in 2014 and were nominated for an American Music Award and won the Billboard Music Award Top Christian Artist in 2015. Their song Oceans was released in 2013 and was certified Platinum – 1,000,000 copies sold.
This Sunday we are being serenaded by our own Tuuholoaki Family Singers. The Tuuholoaki family hails originally from Tonga, and, following in the great Polynesian tradition, has so many singers in the family that they create their own choir. They often sing music from the Tongan tradition, and it’s a treat to have them bring their musical heritage to us.
Next week, we’ll be joined by the McCandless family singers. Rick is a leader and soloist in the tenor section of our choir, and his family, who will show up periodically to serenade the Shared Bread diners, sing as well as most professional ensembles and even have a couple of in-house arrangers. They’ve also been with us during the Christmas season, and in past years were the backbone of the handbell choir.

The California-Pacific Conference has introduced Safe Gatherings, an online abuse prevention program that screens and educates staff and volunteers to help prevent abuse of children, youth, and vulnerable adults in group settings.
Our congregation's staff and volunteers are participating in this program which includes an application, background check, and the online training every three years. (Some of you may have already received invitations to participate in the screening or provide a reference for one of our volunteers.)
We are excited to be a part of this new program as we continue to grow and offer a safe space for all.

We have many spots to fill for liturgists on Sunday mornings. The following link will take you the sign up. Please check it out.
