Wolfe Named Corning, Inc., Foundation Chair
Professor Alison M. Wolfe, a member of the Business and Economics faculty since 2003, was recently named the Corning Incorporated Foundation Chair in Business. The chaired faculty appointment, a part of Corning Incorporated’s support of the Elmira College business program, dates back to 1980.
Professor Alison M. Wolfe, a member of the Business & Economics faculty of Elmira College since 2003, has been named the Corning Incorporated Foundation Chair in Business as of July 2017.
This chaired faculty appointment is part of Corning Incorporated’s support of the Elmira College business program dating back to 1980, when the first Corning Glass Professorship was established. The last faculty member named to this Chair was the late Emeritus Professor Gerald C. Parkhouse.
Prof. Wolfe is a recognized expert on experiential learning and it’s applications in postsecondary business education, and among her publications includes three papers that have won the best paper award at Marketing Management Association (MMA) conferences. While at Elmira College, she has been recognized for her teaching excellence as evidenced by her being awarded the Josef Stein Award for new faculty performing with distinction, as well as being the first recipient of the Dr. Malcolm and Virginia Marsden endowed scholarship.
Prof. Wolfe is known on campus for bringing “real world” experiences into business education. Her marketing and international business courses often feature guest speakers, field trips and student consulting projects for “real businesses/organizations.” For example, her students have met with numerous members of the Tommy Hilfiger corporate office in Manhattan, toured an NHL arena with a leading sports marketing agency, and consulted with a variety of organizations, including wineries, manufacturing firms and non-profit entities. She also has led term-three travel courses to the United Kingdom and Ireland for the past 12 years, as well as a humanities travel course for Habitat for Humanity International in the southern (MS, TN, FL) United States.
Prof. Wolfe has also been extremely active with numerous organizations both on campus and within the community. At Elmira College she has served as President of the Sigma Beta Delta, international honor for business, management and administration, NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR), and past Chair for the Arts & Lectures and Advising Committees. She is also the Faculty Advisor for the Elmira College Enactus Team, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring students to improve the world through entrepreneurial action. She has also served, or currently serves, as a member of the board of directors of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, The Ireze Foundation, SESC Habitat for Humanity, as well as, a member of the Corning Community College’s Business Administration Program Advisory Committee.
According to Elmira College President Dr. Charles Lindsay, “[Prof. Wolfe’s] appointment to this position reflects years of excellent work as a member of the Elmira College business program, particularly her efforts to engage students in the local community.” Some of the other comments we have received regarding her appointment include:
“As CEO of an international business I know only too well how hard it is to find the very best talent when recruiting colleagues with excellent and relevant academic credentials, so I am hugely supportive of the work that Alison and Elmira College are doing to educate students about global business matters.” --Christopher Parkhouse, son of previous Corning Incorporated Foundation Chair and Professor Emeritus Gerald C Parkhouse.
"Professor Wolfe utilizes her business connections to provide real-world learning opportunities for students, giving us the chance to truly experience what working in the industry is like. She always goes above and beyond to arrange the best programs for her students. She is certainly an asset not only to the Elmira College Business Department, but to the institution as a whole." --Miranda Satterly, Elmira College Class of 2016
"Professor Wolfe transforms her students’ lives in academia, professionally, and personally. She has been the foundation of the Elmira College division in business and mentor to many with her real-world approaches in and outside the classroom. This is certainly a well-deserved recognition of her leadership, and significant contributions to advance our alma mater as well as the city of Elmira and all of the Twin Tiers." --Maria Beck, Class of 2015
"I worked harder than I ever thought I could work for Professor Wolfe's classes, but I learned so much. I feel better prepared for my future after participating in the incredible experiential learning projects she organized for her classes." --Elizabeth Paolucci, Class of 2017
“I can not imagine a person better for this appointment than Prof. Wolfe. She is a dedicated educator and has a strong connection with Corning Incorporated. . . . I was a student of Prof. Wolfe for 4 years and I can say without hesitation that there is no person who did more for my educational advancement.” --Spencer Cocca, Class of 2017
"Prof. Wolfe is the type of educator that we want to stay in touch even after graduation. Her classes transcend the classroom as her approach truly incorporates real world experience. I am incredibly grateful for the four years I had of her tutelage as she helped me define my career path. Prof. Wolfe is the best!" --Olga Bermúdez Paiva, Class of 2012
