UMW Legislative Event
For several years, United Methodist Women (UMW) held a day when they focus on a legislative topic. For several years, following the program they would talk with their legislators in their offices. This year's event will be held on Saturday, April 11, and will focus on "Seeds of Peace: Alternatives to Violence." Richmond Deputy Police Chief Ed Medina will be the main speaker. Two other community leaders will offer breakout groups on their work. Lunch follows the morning program from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 2100 J Street, Sacramento. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Cost is $15. Make check payable to CA-NV Conf. UMW and mail to UMW Conference Treasurer, Lynette Jung Lee, 3916 Lone Vista Ave., Oakland, CA 94619. There will be a $25 fee for returned checks. Registration deadline is April 5. For more information, call (510) 530-7511.

Super Bowl teams' fans compete to help hungry
BOSTON (UMNS) - United Methodists on U.S. both coasts are turning the Super Bowl into a food fight. The Pacific Northwest Conference, home of the Seattle Seahawks, and the New England Conference, home of the Patriots, are competing to see who will collect the most canned goods and donations for local food pantries.

Intercepting traffickers ahead of Super Bowl
SEATTLE (UMNS) - Members of United Methodist Women at Seattle's First United Methodist Church are huddling together to bring awareness to human trafficking in the week leading up to Super Bowl Sunday. They are asking others to join a photo campaign called "Intercept the Traffickers." Elizabeth Blanton and Cary Lee have the story for the Pacific Northwest Conference.

How a church is using blended worship to reach new people
SHREVEPORT, La. (UMNS) - Summer Grove United Methodist Church is in a neighborhood transitioning from majority white to majority African-American. If the church didn't change, its pastor said, it would die. So Summer Grove has started a service that blends contemporary and traditional elements led by an African-American worship leader. Sherry P. Shephard of the Shreveport Times reports on the results.

GLENVIEW, Ill. (UMNS) - The United Methodist Board of Pension and Health Benefits plans to exclude certain investments in thermal coal and companies that operate in countries with a pattern of human rights abuses. The key element the board is looking at: Are these investments sustainable?

Council of Bishops Executive Committee Meets in Dallas
Dallas, Texas: The Executive Committee of the Council of Bishops (COB) of The United Methodist Church held its annual January meeting on the 13th and 14th in Dallas, Texas. They shared devotions, heard reports and took actions on a number of items in their quest to lead the church in "making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." (Read more)
