The Upper Room Daily Devotional Nashville, Tennessee, United States Never Alone" for Thursday, 29 January 2015 - Scripture: Isaiah 49:14 The people of Zion said,
“The Lord has turned away
    and forgotten us.”
15 The Lord answered,
“Could a mother forget a child
    who nurses at her breast?
Could she fail to love an infant
who came from her own body?
Even if a mother could forget,
    I will never forget you.
God said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.”[Hebrews 13:5 (NRSV)]
I have a good friend who offers me comforting advice when I need it. However, since an ocean divides us, I see her only once a year. I often wonder how we remain close despite the time and distance.
The cost of telephoning long distance is expensive, so my friend and I have a one-ring code. When my telephone rings only once, I know my friend is thinking of me. God sends similar signals to me every day. When I hear a kind word from a stranger or I am wrapped in the arms of a loved one, I know that God is with me just as my friend and I remain close in thought.
God’s love lives forever in my heart. I have never seen God, yet I know that God is with me always. I know that through my thoughts I can reach God, who hears my prayers and showers me with loving-kindness. I talk to God as I do my friend, and I can sense God’s presence in the world around me. I am never alone.

Thought for the Day: God is with us — always.
Prayer: Dear God, relieve our worries and cares today. May your love guide us from morning until night, when we lie down in peaceful sleep as we pray, “Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation” (Luke 11:2-4, NIV). Amen. *NOTE: Mrs. Meehan died while this issue was in production.
Prayer focus: Those who need to know that God is near
