"Created for good works (Eph. 2:10).
We now have the term "Nones" and "Dones" - young people who are "done" with religion and check "none" on forms that ask for one's religion. These two categories are growing at remarkable and alarming speed.
There are many reasons for this phenomenon: our increasingly secular society, religious "authorities" who undermine Christianity's credibility in their writings, the unhealthy "marriage" of religion and politics, the perceived and real exclusion of persons and groups from the church, and the fact that many in this demographic just aren't joining any formal groups.
But here's the deal: many of these persons are joining groups engaged in works of mercy. In my view, the United Methodist, with its strong union of "faith and service" is positioned to reach out to these disenfranchised persons and engage them in the most exciting and impactful ministries and outreach on earth; indeed, to do the things Jesus did - AND - with the empowerment that the Holy Spirit can provide! Wow, let's pray that our churches might move more fully in that direction.
