Sunday's Sermon & Scripture:
"Adoption"
James 1:22-27

Scripture Text from James 1:22 Don’t deceive yourselves by only hearing what the Word says, but do it! 23 For whoever hears the Word but doesn’t do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror, 24 who looks at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But if a person looks closely into the perfect Torah, which gives freedom, and continues, becoming not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work it requires, then he will be blessed in what he does.
26 Anyone who thinks he is religiously observant but does not control his tongue is deceiving himself, and his observance counts for nothing. 27 The religious observance that God the Father considers pure and faultless is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being contaminated by the world.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary from James 1:22-27
Verse 23
[23] For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
Beholding his face in a glass — How exactly does the scripture glass show a man the face of his soul!
Verse 24
[24] For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
He beheld himself, and went away — To other business.
And forgot — But such forgetting does not excuse.
Verse 25
[25] But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
But he that looketh diligently — Not with a transient glance, but bending down, fixing his eyes, and searching all to the bottom.
Into the perfect law — Of love as established by faith. St. James here guards us against misunderstanding what St. Paul says concerning the "yoke and bondage of the law." He who keeps the law of love is free, John 8:31, etc. He that does not, is not free, but a slave to sin, and a criminal before God, James 2:10.
And continueth therein — Not like him who forgot it, and went away.
This man — There is a peculiar force in the repetition of the word.
Shall be happy — Not barely in hearing, but doing the will of God.
Verse 26
[26] If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
If any one be ever so religious — Exact in the outward offices of religion.
And bridleth not his tongue — From backbiting, talebearing, evilspeaking, he only deceiveth his own heart, if he fancies he has any true religion at all.
Verse 27
[27] Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
The only true religion in the sight of God, is this, to visit - With counsel, comfort, and relief.
The fatherless and widows — Those who need it most.
In their affliction — In their most helpless and hopeless state.
And to keep himself unspotted from the world — From the maxims, tempers, and customs of it. But this cannot be done, till we have given our hearts to God, and love our neighbour as ourselves.
Sermon Story "The Story of The Disabled" by Gary Lee Parker from Scripture Test
James 1:22 Don’t deceive yourselves by only hearing what the Word says, but do it!
As we read this passage of Scripture from the Epistle of James, there is a reminder of how th church has treated the marginalized especially the people who are disalbed or differently abled. There was aman who was successful in his vocation whether he was a son of a Lietenant Governor of Canada or a Royal Canandian Navy Officer or a Professor of Philosophy at a Canadian Catholic University, but under the invitation of a Catholic Priest in Trosky, France, Europe, He become more successful in God's eyes. This success of his when he took into a house tow adult men who were intellectully impaired. From this invitation, he learned what it means to build true community with people who are different from you. He learned what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. He learned that even people who are different from him while being intellectually impaired are able to teach him what him truly about God's love for His people. He learned that even people who are intellectually impaired have gifts to offer society and the church to build authentic love for each other and bring people together of different faiths and religiions that truly there is One True God. Too often, society would look at this man and say that he is a failure because he is not making money to support an extravagant lifestyle and supporting te government, but he continues to learn that when the poor are in our community we learn to deal with our own inner poverty. He also has learned that the anger that the people with intelledtual impirments have concerning their taken away from their famililes and communities to be placed in a Mental Institution/Hospital brings up his own anger for whatever reason that has not been dealt with. Now, we look at this passage of Scripture and realize that the people we have excluded are the people God is saying that brings us to being real followers of Jesus as we fully include them in our soceity and community allowing them to use their gifts and graces God has given them to build His kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven. We come now to the time to search our hearts and lives to see hwere we have excluded people who are intellectually impaired from our daily lives and communities of faith to learn more of God's love. We come to seek God's forgiveness and blessings as we come to eat Jesus' Body and drink His Blood through the participation of the Hly Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. We come to receive singing the Hymn "Tuesday's Child" by Steven Curtis Chapman
1. Just when I thought I was strong
Another weak day comes along
And all my righteousness goes wrong
But I was doing so well
My dreams to be a Godly man
Seem out of reach of my own hand
But where I fall short, His grace still stands
If I have faith like a child
Chorus:
And if Monday's child is fair of face
And Tuesday's child is full of grace
Then you can call me Tuesday's child
Like Wednesday's child, I'm full of woe
And Thursday's child I've got far to go
But you can call me Tuesday's child
2. Sounds too easy some might say
There's a bigger price to pay
But when Jesus gave His life away
It was once and for all
So with more of His grace filling me
I more than ever want to be
Growing up in purity
With the faith of a child
Chorus:
And if Monday's child is fair of face
And Tuesday's child is full of grace
Then you can call me Tuesday's child
Like Wednesday's child, I'm full of woe
And Thursday's child I've got far to go
But you can call me Tuesday's child
Chorus 2.
That's what I want to be
Full of His grace for me
Knowing He's all I need
Chours:
And if Monday's child is fair of face
And Tuesday's child is full of grace
Then you can call me Tuesday's child
Like Wednesday's child, I'm full of woe
And Thursday's child I've got far to go
But you can call me Tuesday's child
Chours 2:
Sharing the grace He gives
That's how I want to live
Free in His promises
I want to be Tuesday's child

Brooke hosted a LemonAid stand in Hermosa Beach
    Lemons into LemonAid...
One of the beautiful things that has been happening around our community this summer is that our young people have been busy hosting "LemonAid Stands" for Imagine No Malaria. Alongside all the programs we've planned at church, families in our community have been finding ways to take their own initiative and figure out how to set up a LemonAid stand somewhere in the community. They've been imaginative, and their entrepreneurial spirit has been making a real difference.
The work of Imagine No Malaria connects us to a global effort of the United Methodist Church, to end malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. Already, our efforts have made a major impact in the many communities where we've been working. It's pretty incredible to think what can happen when our little actions get added together into a bigger whole.
The work of helping eliminate the preventable diseases that too often affect the poor in our world--like Malaria and AIDS--is one of the ministry areas that the United Methodist Church has focused on since 2008. This kind of work--that helps alleviate the suffering of others and transforms communities through education and health care--is the kind of ministry that's central to who we are. It's a blessing to have young people who are leading us!
We plan to recognize everyone who's hosted a LemonAid Stand during worship on August 23, as a small way of saying thanks for this ministry.
    Grace and peace,
    Pastor Molly
I will be out of the office from next Wednesday, August 12th, through the 19th, on vacation with my family. I'm very pleased that Stephen Hale, our Youth Director, will preach in our worship services on August 16th.

a view from the pew from a longtime member of our church
"This Sunday, August 9, following church services, we get the special treat of seeing the results of our church's Summer Theater Arts Camp as led by our staff with
Katherine Stanfill and her team of leaders. This year it will be Disney's 101 Dalmatians Kids and the brief one song preview last Sunday during Worship was energetic and delightful. It should be a wonderful show with lots of fun.
With summer holidays and vacation trips and the church choir off during August we get to hear special music by guest artists and our own members. It's been different each week and, surprise of surprises we often have been enjoying the powerfully beautiful voice of our Director of Music,Jim Raycroft. We need to thank him and all who help with worship services.
You and I probably think we are in the middle of summer, but as I talk with Pastor Molly and other staff people..."

You and I probably think we are in the middle of summer, but as I talk with Pastor Molly and other staff people they are deep in planning stages for our fall season right up to Christmas. We all benefit from the wonderful leadership and thought that goes in to our church Sunday worship as well as activities throughout the week. Practically every day is filled with something and we all can find ways to benefit in our religious growth by watching schedules and joining up, especially in small groups. Perhaps you, as I, began doing that as teenagers or younger and now it can still be done, from Bible Study to serving our community with the Shared Bread program. They can always use more help, they tell me. There are also the women's circles, men's groups and the 20-30 age group.
Greeters are always there and last week we can thank the Tuuholoaki girls who are always eager and ready to help in any way they can. Thanks, Grace, Priscilla and Eunice. We appreciate your help as well as your smiling faces.

    New Worship Musicians Hired
Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to share the news that we have hired band musicians to be with us on a regular basis. We are really excited about the quality of musicians, and hope you will take a chance to get to know them more: Mary Ann Stickler, organist/pianist; Gaku Murata, guitar; Cris Monarch, piano; Bryan Fougner, bass; Ed Zajac, drums/percussion.
By rearranging job descriptions, we are able to hire four band musicians without any significant change to our music budget. We are really excited about the quality of musicians, and hope you will take a chance to get to know them more.
This week, we'd like to introduce you to the band:
Gaku Murata (guitar) was born in Tokyo, trained at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, and has been involved with countless performances with renowned performers in all mediums. He has released 3 solo CDs.
Bryan Fougner (bass) was born in Wisconsin, and trained all over the country (including the University of Wisconsin, Madison). He's performed thousands of times, with everyone from Grand Funk Railroad to Kansas to Joan Jett and the BlackHearts to the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. He has released 4 albums (3 studio and 1 live).
Cris Monarch (keyboards) was born in California, and has a Master's degree from the Aaron Copeland Conservatory in New York. He was music director for the California Children's Theatre Network and is busy today as an accompanist in the Los Angeles area.
Ed Zajac (drums) was born in California, trained at UCLA, and works as a studio musician in Los Angeles as drummer, percussionist and as a singer with hundreds of movie soundtracks, albums and live performances to his credit.
We have put more information about all of them on our website. We've loved not only the skill they bring to their music, but also their devotion in worship, their willingness to work with young musicians from our church, and more.

    What We Heard:
    Worship Questionnaire
Our Worship and Music Committee asked you to respond to a survey questionnaire at the beginning of June. We wanted to share what we heard, and affirm our commitment to continuing to offer meaningful worship for our intergenerational church community.
Our Church Council recently confirmed our current Sunday worship schedule, with a casual 8:30am service in Epworth Lounge, and a celebration worship in the sanctuary at 10:30.
You can read our detailed summary of questionnaire responses here; it will be shared this Sunday, too.

    Mid-Year Finance Update
As we enter the second half of the calendar and budget year, we are somewhat behind in contributions to the church. To date, our giving is about $21,000 under what we budgeted; currently, our expenses are also under budget, so our year-to-date deficit is just under $5,000.
Our Finance Committee has prepared a bit more detailed information, which is available here.
Our annual budget is around $500,000, and supports our wonderful staff, helps care for our facilities, and reaches out beyond our walls in mission. By clicking the link above, you can learn more about what ministries our budget supports, and some opportunities to give in support of our work together.

    Book Club: September 3, 7pm
Book Club met on July 16 to discuss "The Well Women." With several new members, the club has selected as its next read, "Cry, the Beloved Country." Written by Alan Paton and published in 1948, this impassioned novel is the deeply moving story of a native pastor and his son, set against apartheid South Africa, a land and a people riven by racial injustice. Remarkable for its lyricism, unforgettable for character and incident, the book is a classic work of love and hope, courage and endurance, born of the dignity of man. The novel is available on Amazon. Next meeting is set for Thursday, September 3, at 7 pm, at church. All are welcome. For information, contact Ann Gallagher mdgapg@verizon.net
