Take a quick look at what's coming up:
Greetings Resurrection Blue Springs,
It's been a busy week regrouping after the trip to England. I returned home safely late last Sunday night after spending all week with over 70 other Resurrection members and Saint Paul School of Theology students on a Revival Tour that retraced the life and impact of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. It was a great trip. I'm still processing all that we saw and learned. Putting the historical context together with the images from Wesley's life makes our denominational story come alive in new ways. I am really excited to share with you portions of our trip this fall as I lead a six-week study on Revival starting September 16th.
Today we're into our second day of hosting the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit. We have 55 participants here at our Blue Springs site taking part in this awesome leadership development summit. The speakers have been inspiring and have given us practical skills that I am anxious to put into practice. Our participants have been excited to have this site available in their own neighborhood.
I want to say a big thank you to those who generously participated in this year’s School Supply Drive. We delivered a load of supplies and backpacks to Community Services League this week. These supplies will be distributed at the Back to School Fairs in our area sponsored by CSL. The children and families who will receive these gifts will be greatly blessed and with your prayers these tools for learning will help equip these students for a successful school year. Thank YOU!
I’m excited to be preaching live this weekend on our third and final movie of our sermon series, Resurrection Goes to the Movies. We’ll be taking a look at Disney's McFarland, USA. It's a great movie based on a true story about family, community and overcoming prejudices. We'll also be celebrating Holy Communion at each or our service. Join us for worship this Sunday and if you haven’t seen the movie yet, please consider joining us on Sunday evening at 6:30 pm in the sanctuary for this great family friendly fim. We'll provide the popcorn and snacks!
In the meantime, take a look at all that's coming up below:
Family Movie Night Sunday, August 9 at 6:30 pm. Bring your kids and friends to see the family-friendly (PG) McFarland, USA in the Sanctuary. Complimentary popcorn and snacks will be served!
Jesus Apprentice Wednesdays, Aug. 12 – Sept. 2, 6:30 pm When Jesus taught the disciples, his message was simple and clear. In this illuminating 4 week study, author Jeff Kirby sweeps aside the clutter of our daily lives and takes us to the heart of Jesus’ message. Explore Christian belief through Christian action, following in the footsteps of our Lord. Mike Ash will lead this book study. Study materials available at Guest Services for $8. Contact Mike.Ash@cor.org for details or sign up online here.
Celebrate with Us at the All-Church Picnic! Join our Resurrection Blue Springs community on Sunday, August 16, at the Lake Tapawingo Clubhouse. Activities begin at 4 pm., with food served at 5 pm. We’ll have boat rides, games, great food and fellowship. Bring a side dish or dessert to share., and we’ll provide the main dish! You’ll be able to eat inside or outside, so don’t let the weather keep you from this fun event! Sign up at Guest Services on Sunday to help with the picnic.
FaithWork-My Father’s House, August 22 Be a part of God’s love in action. Rez Blue Springs will be working at My Father’s House, the Resurrection Furnishings Ministry, on Saturday, Aug 22nd for FaithWork. This ministry furnishes hope to those in need by distributing donated furnishings and home essentials. Work includes furniture loading or sorting and stocking linens and housewares. This work is suitable for adults and children ages 8 and up accompanied by an adult. We’ll meet at the church at 9am and carpool to the warehouse off Manchester Trafficway in KC. And, good news, this ministry concludes with lunch there! Register online here or just show up on Saturday morning if you’re ready to serve!
3rd Annual De-Feet Hunger 5K Walk/Run – September 12th Created by a group of Heartland churches, this is not just a Walk/Run event. Following the race, participants and volunteers join together to pack lunches for Harvesters. Last year we had 300 runners/walkers and packed 8,000 lunches for high school kids in 26 counties in Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas. Around 30 congregations participated last year. This year our goal is 400 runners/walkers and many more to pack lunches. The event takes place at St. James UMC at 55th Paseo in KCMO. Check out De-Feet Hunger online at www.defeethunger.com
Revival-Faith as Wesley Lived It John Wesley—preacher, professor, founder of the Methodist denomination in England in the 1700s. But what does that mean for us in 2015? Search for a deeper understanding of Wesley’s legacy by studying Pastor Adam’s book, Revival, with other members of our Resurrection family. This 6-week study begins Thursday, Sept. 17, 6:30 pm. You may purchase a book for $8 at Guest Services. Register online here. If you’d like to lead a small group, contactMike.Ash@cor.org.
Christmas in October The Church of the Resurrection mobilizes hundreds of volunteers for Christmas in October each year to help improve the living conditions of elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners in Kansas City. If you can use a paint brush, rake, caulk gun, putty knife, hammer, wrench, broom, etc. – we’ve got a job for you! No special skills needed; volunteers must be age 14 or older. House Captains and Co-Captains are also needed to help oversee a team of volunteers. To learn more and to sign up, visit cor.org/christmasinoctober.
Rez Blue Springs Headed to the Holy Land in Fall of 2016! - I am excited to share that we will be offering a trip to the Holy land, November 14-23 of 2016. This will be the trip of a lifetime and I hope you can join Bill and I as we walk where Jesus walked. We will retrace His life, teaching's, death, and resurrection on a journey of both historical learning and spiritual power! We will be taking this journey along with Pastor Jason Grant, and members from our West campus. Brochures are available now at Guest Services.
I’m thankful to be back in town with all of you and looking forward to worshiping with you this weekend.
