Matthew 6:1 “Be careful not to parade your acts of tzedakah in front of people in order to be seen by them! If you do, you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 So, when you do tzedakah, don’t announce it with trumpets to win people’s praise, like the hypocrites in the synagogues and on the streets. Yes! I tell you, they have their reward already! 3 But you, when you do tzedakah, don’t even let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. 4 Then your tzedakah will be in secret; and your Father, who sees what you do in secret, will reward you.
5 “When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites, who love to pray standing in the synagogues and on street corners, so that people can see them. Yes! I tell you, they have their reward already! 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

The Lord’s Prayer is the most well-known prayer anywhere. But it’s not just a prayer to pray, it’s also a template for all prayer. It was given in response to the request of the disciples when they said, “Lord teach us to pray.” Through prayer we listen and communicate with God. We remind ourselves that God is in control no matter what. We need to pray. Why?
PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES
1. We should pray because Jesus told us to. In Luke 18:1, Jesus told His disciples, “They should always pray and never give up” (NIV). Jesus instructs us to pray and at the same time, He gives us an example. Jesus, who was fully God yet fully man, took time to pray often.
2. We should pray because prayer is God’s appointed way of obtaining things. There is nothing wrong with bringing your needs and requests before God. There may be things in your life that you don’t have because you simply have not asked your Father. The Bible says, “You have not because you ask not.”
3. Prayer is the way by which we overcome our anxiety and worry. Life is full of troubles. Our country is facing trouble. You have your own troubles. Paul says in Philippians 4:6, “Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything” (NLT). Turn your worries into prayers.
4. Prayer is one of the ways we make ourselves ready for the return of Christ. Jesus said in Mark
13, “But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. Take heed, watch and pray; for you don’t know when
the time is” (NASB).
RELEVANT REMINDERS
• When we pray, sometimes God says “no,” sometimes God says “slow,” sometimes God says “grow,” and sometimes God says “go!”
• When you pray, you are talking to the great God in heaven. Do not take Him for granted. Recognize God as your Father in heaven. He is awesome, all powerful, and holy.
APPLICABLE ACTIONS
When we pray, our objective is not to pull God our way. It is to pull us His way. Prayer is not getting my will in heaven. It is getting God’s will on earth. If you want to know the secret to answered prayer, it is this: your objective is to align your will with the will of God. When you do that, you will see your prayers answered in the affirmative.

Who is a greater example of a man of prayer than Christ Himself? Despite the fact that He was God walking among us in human form, He felt the need to spend hours in prayer with the Father. Often at night, while the others were asleep, Jesus was praying. His disciples, observing this, came to Him one day and said, “Lord teach us to pray.” Jesus, in the Lord’s Prayer—the model and template for all prayer—teaches us the following:
PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES
1. It starts with Our Father who art in heaven. How is it that God can be our Father? What does that mean? If you want to know what kind of Father we have in heaven, just take a long look at Jesus. He said in John 8:19, “If you had known me, you would have known also my Father” (KJV). What is the Father in heaven like? He is just like Jesus.
2. To start with adoration and praise for the Father. Take time to worship the Lord. Sometimes we are so enamored with getting presents from God we fail to bask in His presence.
3. To set apart my life and character for Christ and live a holy life. “Hallowed be thy name” means “Set apart is Your name, Lord, and I want to be set apart for God in everything that I do.”
4. To pray in effect for the return of Jesus Christ to the earth. I am saying, “Come back and come back really soon.” That is a good thing for a Christian to pray. As John said, “Even so, come Lord Jesus.” Can you pray that right now? Just think about your life. Can you say, “Lord come. I am ready.”
5. To pray, “Lord rule in my life.” Not my will but Yours be done. Trust the Lord in all of these areas. You may be in a Gethsemane right now. Here is what you need to remember: It’s better to be in a storm with Jesus than anywhere else without Him.
6. To affirm that everything we have comes from God. When I am saying, “Give me this day my daily bread,” I am not only asking God to provide it in the future. I am acknowledging who gave it to me in the present. It is an affirmation that everything that we have comes from God.
7. To pray regularly for forgiveness and to extend forgiveness to others. Constant forgiveness of others should be the natural result of our understanding of the forgiveness God has extended to us.
8. To pray, “Lord, don’t let me be tempted above my capacity to resist.” 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it” (NLT).
RELEVANT REMINDERS
• The Lord’s Prayer isn’t just a template for prayer; it is a template for living as a follower of Jesus Christ.
• When you pray, remember ACTS. A for adoration. C for confession. T for thanksgiving. S for supplication.
APPLICABLE ACTIONS
This privilege of prayer is only for the Christian. The nonbeliever does not have this kind of communication with God. You can say your prayers all you want but it’s not the same as praying. Prayer is only for the person who has come into a relationship with the Lord.

14 For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will not forgive yours.
16 “Now when you fast, don’t go around looking miserable, like the hypocrites. They make sour faces so that people will know they are fasting. Yes! I tell you, they have their reward already! 17 But you, when you fast, wash your face and groom yourself, 18 so that no one will know you are fasting — except your Father, who is with you in secret. Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
19 “Do not store up for yourselves wealth here on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and burglars break in and steal. 20 Instead, store up for yourselves wealth in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and burglars do not break in or steal. 21 For where your wealth is, there your heart will be also. 22 ‘The eye is the lamp of the body.’ So if you have a ‘good eye’ [that is, if you are generous] your whole body will be full of light; 23 but if you have an ‘evil eye’ [if you are stingy] your whole body will be full of darkness. If, then, the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 No one can be slave to two masters; for he will either hate the first and love the second, or scorn the second and be loyal to the first. You can’t be a slave to both God and money.
25 “Therefore, I tell you, don’t worry about your life — what you will eat or drink; or about your body — what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds flying about! They neither plant nor harvest, nor do they gather food into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they are? 27 Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to his life?
28 “And why be anxious about clothing? Think about the fields of wild irises, and how they grow. They neither work nor spin thread, 29 yet I tell you that not even Shlomo in all his glory was clothed as beautifully as one of these. 30 If this is how God clothes grass in the field — which is here today and gone tomorrow, thrown in an oven — won’t he much more clothe you? What little trust you have!
31 “So don’t be anxious, asking, ‘What will we eat?,’ ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘How will we be clothed?’ 32 For it is the pagans who set their hearts on all these things. Your heavenly Father knows you need them all. 33 But seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Don’t worry about tomorrow — tomorrow will worry about itself! Today has enough tsuris already!
There is a lot to worry about in our culture today, from the economy, diseases, and terrorists to our own personal worries about things like health and family. Life is just filled with so many worries; how do we overcome fear and worry, and what did Jesus have to say on this topic?
PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES
1. The believer should not worry. Jesus did not say, “Don’t think about things like clothes or food.” He did not say we should not think about them or plan for the future. But he did say we should not worry about them. Don’t have anxiety about the issues of life.
2. Worry will not make your life longer. You cannot lengthen your life. So why worry? Psalm 90:9, 12 says, “We spend our years as a tale that is told. Lord teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (NKJV).
3. Instead of worry, put God and His will first in your life. Jesus says in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God, and all of these things shall be added to you” (ESV). What does that mean? The Greek translation for first means “first in the line of more than one option.” We must put God in the number one position.
RELEVANT REMINDERS
• When we seek God and His kingdom first, life will find its proper perspective.
• Your goal should be to honor God in everything that you do.
• Instead of channeling your energies into chasing nothing, chase after God instead. Seek Him and put Him first.
APPLICABLE ACTIONS
Your family is starting to unravel. You are having friction with your wife or husband. Kids are rebelling. Have you started praying about that? Have you been a godly man or woman? A godly husband? A godly wife? Put the Lord first and watch what happens. The same goes for your business, your finances, your single life, everything you do. Then watch how the Lord will bless you.
