Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott Chrostek - Friday, 7 August 2015 from The Resurrection United Methodist Church Downtown in Kansas City, Missouri, United States

Greetings RezDowntowners,
I want to begin this week’s eNote with A Big Thank You! I am so encouraged and excited by the sheer number of you who generously participated in this year’s School Supply Drive. All dayThursday I was able to witness the enormous amount of resources getting delivered to Wendell Phillips Elementary School as well as several of our mission partners throughout Kansas City. The children and families who will receive these gifts will be greatly blessed and with your prayers these will be catalytic in making this school year a huge success. Thank YOU!
Secondly, I want to thank you for your prayers as I returned home safely late last Sunday night after spending all week with over 70 other Resurrection members on a Revival Tour that retraced the life and impact of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. It was a great trip, but I’m definitely thankful to be back in town with all of you for worship this weekend. I am really excited to share with you this weekend some portions of our trip, but I would love for you to join me this fall, as I lead a five-week study on Revival starting September 23rd.
I’m excited to say that I’ll be preaching live this weekend on our third and final movie of our sermon series, Resurrection at the Movies. We’ll be taking a look at Disney's McFarland, USAand the role of seeing and believing. This movie is fantastic, and if you haven’t seen the movie yet, please consider renting it this weekend, otherwise, I’m excited to share about the power of pushing past first impressions with you this weekend in worship on both Saturday and Sunday!
In the meantime, here are several ways to get connected to the life of this church over the next few weeks:
August Faithwork – Summer is winding down and it is back-to-school time. We see this as a great opportunity to serve our community. Our next FaithWork will be Saturday, August 15 at 9 am. All you have to do is show-up at the church (1522 McGee) wearing clothes that can get dirty and we will send you out to serve in the community until lunch time. We will be working on projects all over the city, but we will be focusing on supporting local schools in helping to make sure the schools are ready to receive the children for the new school year. We will also have on-site projects for people of any age and ability. It will be a big day of service and you will want to be a part of it! Contact Pastor Todd.Maberry@cor.org with any questions. For more information visitrezdowntown.org/faithwork.
Are You a Parent of a Young Child? We have a fun and thought-provoking morning for you, including programming for your children. Pastor Anne Williams and Kelly Sisney will lead a workshop on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9-11:30 am. Kelly will share the ten things she wishes she’d known when her kids were young, and Pastor Anne will help you develop a plan for handling parenting challenges and creating a family mission statement. For questions, contactAnne.Williams@cor.org. Register at rezdowntown.org/parentingworkshop.
Matthew’s Ministry August Event – Individuals of all ages with special needs and their siblings are invited to a fun-filled day of activities, fellowship, and laughter while parents and caregivers take an afternoon for themselves. The event will be Sunday, August 23 from 1-4 pm at the Rez Downtown at 1522 McGee. You do not need to be a member to participate. Parents/caregivers are welcome but not obliged to stay the first half hour or so to help their loved ones get acclimated and comfortable with the environment. Participants must register by Wednesday, August 19 so that we may plan accordingly for snacks and volunteers. For more information and to register, contact Hannah Murray at hjhamilton87@yahoo.com or visit rezdowntown.org/matthewsministryevent.
Save the Date – The First Women’s Retreat for Resurrection Downtown! Join other women onSaturday, August 29, 9 am – 2 pm, to learn more about spiritual wellness from our guest speaker, Pastor Anne Williams. We will create prayer journals to continue this spiritual journey during our own time, participate in a relaxing beginners’ yoga class taught by Shannon Wheeler, and put together wellness bags for the women at Rose Brooks Center. A light breakfast will be provided and lunch will be a joint effort, so we are asking everyone to bring an item to share. Register for this event online at rezdowntown.org/womensretreat. The cost is $25 per person; scholarships available. Start collecting travel-size hygiene products for the wellness bags (even the guys can do this!) For more information, contact Kristen Sayers at klynsayers@gmail.com.
Christmas in October – The Church of the Resurrection mobilizes hundreds of volunteers for Christmas in October each year to help improve the living conditions of elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners in Kansas City. Lend your hands and hearts to this worthwhile community effort Saturday, October 10, and make a tangible difference for someone in need. If you can use a paint brush, rake, caulk gun, putty knife, hammer, wrench, broom, etc. – we’ve got a job for you! No special skills needed; volunteers must be age 14 or older. House Captains and Co-Captains are also needed to help oversee a team of volunteers. To learn more and to sign up, visitcor.org/christmasinoctober.
Please know that I consider it a privilege to serve Christ alongside you in this city. I hope you'll invite friends and join us this Saturday and Sunday in worship as together we continue building Christian community in the center of this city by looking at McFarland, USA. Have a God-filled Friday and I'll look forward to seeing you soon!
Grace and Peace,
Scott
