Dear Saint Paul community,
The World AIDS Day Observance Chapel Service on the Saint Paul at Resurrection campus was jointly planned by staff from Saint Paul and Resurrection with inspirational guidance of Bishop Fritz Mutti.
It was an honor to welcome James H. Salley as the speaker. Jim is the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Institutional Advancement for Africa University. Jim
challenged those gathered to "take up the ministry to reduce the epidemic."Dr. Israel Kamudzandu is a graduate of Africa University and he had the privilege of introducing his friend and colleague Jim Salley to the Saint Paul and Resurrection communities.
Dr. Eugene Lowry, professor emeritus of preaching, engaged and challenged the Saint Paul at Resurrection community in chapel with his sermon "Somebody's Someone." It has been delightful to reconnectwith Gene and Sarah Lowry since returning to Saint Paul. The preacher is still the same-and the proclamation is measured with a nuanced cadence that simply explodes the scripture and story into life transforming ways. Thank you Gene!
My copy of the Saint Paul Annual Report arrived on Saturday, November 28. Eventhough I had reviewed it over several of its various versions, it looked and felt different in its final form. I found myself sitting and reading it again from cover to cover. As I closed the back cover I uttered thanks be to God. We began the year with a new
curriculum requiring fewer hours to complete a degree and organized around four themes: spiritual formation, interpreting the faith, growing in communion and serving the world.
It has been delightful to visit with faculty and students through the year as spiritual formation retreats and practicums were introduced. The most creative energy seemed to emerge when faculty described the design of their first Mid-Degree Seminar or Summative Seminar. It was also a year when hybrid courses (blended time in classroom and online) increased in number. If you did not receive an Annual Report you will see one our website next Thursday. It is an honor and privilege to serve with and among the Saint Paul faculty, staff and students in two campus locations.
The season of Advent finds students and faculty entering into the final days of the fall
semester. Reading, research, writing, projects, exegesis, reports and deadlines are held in a creative tension with the anticipation, expectancy, waiting and patience of Advent. In these times when mass shootings are now a daily occurrence, hundreds of thousands of people with diagnosed HIV infection are not receiving care or anti-retroviral treatment, refugees from Syria seek safety and freedom, immigrants struggle to keep their families together, and we search for faithful responses. Advent shouts God is with us. Is there a better message to receive, embrace, live into and then live out in expressions of love, grace, justice and peace? God is with us.
God is with us on the journey,
Rev. H. Sharon Howell, President
