Pastor Cara's Weekly Email from Shawnee Church of the Nazarene in Shawnee, Kansas, United States
This week on Wednesday, December 6th, some people around the world, especially in Europe, celebrated something called, “St. Nicholas Day.”
There isn’t a whole lot that is known about St. Nicholas, but we do know that he was tortured and thrown in jail during the reign of Emperor Diocletian (about 250 years after Jesus walked this earth). Many think he was at the very First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325. He is traditionally associated with sailors but most importantly for his generous gifts given to children.
As the story goes, St. Nicholas was a church leader whose parents left him a great deal of money. He wanted to use it all in service to Christ. So, he would hear of a need and in the middle of the night he would toss a small bag of gold through a window to help the poor. One story says that he tossed gold coins in a window and the coins landed in some stockings or shoes that were hung by the fire to dry! This story of how he helped people, especially children, spread all over Europe. As a result kids were setting shoes and stockings out on the night of December 5th in hopes that St. Nicholas would stop by their house.
We got to the point of Santa Claus today in America because the tradition of St. Nicholas was brought over by Dutch and German settlers. The Dutch name for St. Nicholas is: Sinter Classe and the German name is: Sant Niklaas. If you say those two names very fast, repeatedly, you end up with Santa Claus! The celebration of St. Nicholas, someone who dedicated his life to service of the poor in the name of Christ, and the celebration of the birth of Christ have gotten squashed together and that is how we have a mix of traditions today.
What we can learn from St. Nicholas today is that we are called to care for others and give ourselves in service to others as an outpouring of our desire to follow God. May we be found faithful as we serve those around us and are reminded in the life of St. Nicholas about the importance of caring for others.
Almighty God, in your love you gave your servant Nicholas of Myra a perpetual name for deeds of kindness both on land and sea: Grant, we pray, that your Church may never cease to work for the happiness of children, the relief of the poor, and the help of those tased by tempests of doubt or grief; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Cara

Around this time, Emperor Augustus issued an order for a census to be taken throughout the Empire. 2 This registration, the first of its kind, took place when Quirinius was governing in Syria. 3 Everyone went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 So Yosef, because he was a descendant of David, went up from the town of Natzeret in the Galil to the town of David, called Beit-Lechem, in Y’hudah, 5 to be registered, with Miryam, to whom he was engaged, and who was pregnant. 6 While they were there, the time came for her to give birth; 7 and she gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him in cloth and laid him down in a feeding trough, because there was no space for them in the living-quarters.
8 In the countryside nearby were some shepherds spending the night in the fields, guarding their flocks, 9 when an angel of Adonai appeared to them, and the Sh’khinah of Adonai shone around them. They were terrified; 10 but the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, because I am here announcing to you Good News that will bring great joy to all the people. 11 This very day, in the town of David, there was born for you a Deliverer who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 Here is how you will know: you will find a baby wrapped in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.” 13 Suddenly, along with the angel was a vast army from heaven praising God:
14 “In the highest heaven, glory to God!
And on earth, peace among people of good will!”
15 No sooner had the angels left them and gone back into heaven than the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go over to Beit-Lechem and see this thing that has happened, that Adonai has told us about.” 16 Hurrying off, they came and found Miryam and Yosef, and the baby lying in the feeding trough. 17 Upon seeing this, they made known what they had been told about this child; 18 and all who heard were amazed by what the shepherds said to them.

God sent Jesus for each one of us as the most incredible gift ever. He lived on earth, among us, as a human and experienced all the tough stuff we do. Then, He gave His life to pay the price for the wrong things we’ve done. Because of that, we can live forever with God. Pray for each other. Ask God to help you see His amazing gift for you in Jesus every single day.
REMEMBER THIS: "Command the rich to do what is good. Tell them to be rich in doing good things. They must give freely. They must be willing to share." (1 Timothy 6:18, NIrV)

"AN IMPERFECT CHRISTMAS" by Carey Nieuwhof

It’s no secret that Christmas can be one of the most stressful times of the year.
And the tension is that by this point, Christmas Eve, all the ‘how to avoid stress’ tips from the I’ve-got-everything-together-why-don’t-you people seem too little too late:
Grace is a much misunderstood concept. It’s never earned. It’s not deserved. Because if it were, it wouldn’t be grace. Grace is simply undeserved love. Love that came to you not because you’ve got it oh-so-together, but because you don’t. That’s Christmas. That’s the Gospel.
And if you look hard enough, it’s actually in the tension this Christmas where you might see grace the most clearly:
At dinner with that terribly awkward relative. Grace never discriminates. Grace is favor that is unmerited, and your favor can be too.
When the kids expect too much. In the same way that you get frustrated with the expectations of your kids, God must at times get frustrated with the expectations we bring to him. Yet his love remains.
When you see the homeless. Jesus was born in a feeding trough, and the announcement of his birth went to common shepherds. God has a heart for His people.
In your exhaustion. Grace comes when we need it most . . . and it never runs out.
Sure, it would be nice if we did a little better next year. But that should never kill the joy, the power or the message of Christmas. In fact, it underscores it.
The surprise of Christmas is this: it speaks to us in our weakness even more than it speaks to us in our strength. And because of your imperfect Christmas, you might have a front row seat to see what Christmas is actually all about.
So, Merry Christmas!

Our Theme this month has been "The Big Give". We have discussed giving a gift of things, time, and our voices.
In the Village
Last Wednesday, the children worked on gifts to give to those living at Shawnee Hills after caroling. Next Wednesday, Dec. 13, we will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the main entrance of Shawnee Hills, then proceed inside to give of our time and our voices. Please pick up an information card at the checkin desk if you would like a map. Please plan to sing with us and be a part of our giving.
December 20, we will be celebrating Jesus Birthday with a Birthday Party beginning upstairs in 2umpteen and ending downstairs in the Neighborhood. When discussing going to this Party, your child might ask the question, should we take a present? It is your opportunity to discuss the best gift we can give Jesus is ourself (our heart), time, and voices, just like we have been doing this month.
Schedule for the rest of December:

Pastor Cara's Weekly Email from Shawnee Church of the Nazarene in Shawnee Kansas United States
Greetings Shawnee Family,
In my devotions this week I came across a word of hope from the book of Hebrews and want to share my reflections with you below.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Cara
Scripture: Let’s hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, because the one who made the promises is reliable. And let us consider each other carefully for the purpose of sparking love and good deeds. Don’t stop meeting together with other believers, which some people have gotten into the habit of doing. Instead, encourage each other, especially as you see the day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:23-25 (Common English Bible))
Observation: The writer of the book of Hebrews has a deep desire for the people to live into the grace that has been given by God. This passage is an example of what "an appropriate response to that grace"(1) looks like.
The CEB version above says, "Let's hold on the the confession of our hope without wavering." This hope that we have is salvation given by God...
...it is relationship
...it is an eternal promise that we will be in God's presence and share in God's love forever.
One commentator put it this way: "Nothing less than the faithfulness of God guarantees that those who endure to the end will receive the “hope” God has prepared for them." (2)
The CEB talks about "sparking love and good deeds." Other translations say, "stir up" (3) or "spur on" (4) and there is sigfificance to looking at all three. The same commentator goes on to say, "The Greek term behind spur … on has the same connotation as the English phrase “stir up.” Ancient writers usually used it for stirring up people in the wrong way, for irritating or angering. Some people are good at just “stirring others up.” Christians should practice the same zeal in stirring up people to love! This love expresses itself in good or appropriate deeds. These deeds meet the needs of and bless those who receive them." (5)
The author of the book of Hebrews was aware that some people were not gathering for Christian fellowship anymore. The response of the author was to not give up on meeting together because, "such a habit is a breach of love. Meeting times provide a context for the most important kind of mutual care: let us encourage one another." (6)
Application: The season of Advent is about to begin. The first candle in the Advent wreath will be lit on Sunday and that candle represents HOPE. I love the wording in the CEB saying that we should "hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering." I think there are many days I know that we have hope in Christ, but it doesn't always seem like a reality. I need reminded... I need to hold on without wavering. I want to be someone who "stirs up" other Christians for good deeds and hope! I want to be infections in that way! Also, I know I need to be in community and relationship with other Christians. Why? Because we encourage one another. I have talked before about us being a gathered and sent people. We gather to worship, encourage one another, remind us that our identity is found in Christ and not ourselves... and we are sent to confess "our hope without wavering." What better time than now, the season of Advent, to declare and confess hope in this world!
Prayer: Amen. (7)

December 3 in the Neighborhood - Shawnee Church of the Nazarene in Shawnee, Kansas United States
The Children's Ministry Team is very excited to let you know we are beginning a new curriculum from the reThink Group, called 252 Basics. It is based on the scripture: Luke 2:52, "and Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and if favor with God and men". This curriculum will allow for one continuous lesson in a Large Group format and a Small Group format. The children will begin downstairs and then move to their classroom upstairs as in previous weeks. We will be calling our time together Large/Small Groups. Each month will have a theme with a different Bible Story and scripture each week. On the weeks of Family Worship, the Small Group lesson will be used.
There is a Parent App available, called Parent Cue. Go to the App Store and download it for free. You can put in your child/children's information and it will give developmental information, the synopsis of the lessons, the Bible Verse, life applications, and things you can do together as a family according to the age of your child. We have our children in our care for such a short time, it will also keep track of those days for you. We want to partner with you to make the most of their growing years. There will be some printed copies on the welcome desk until you have downloaded your app. If you have any questions, please ask.

"AN IMPERFECT CHRISTMAS" by Carey Nieuwhof
It's no secret that Christmas can be one of the most stressful times of the year. And the tension is that by Christmas Eve, all the 'how to avoid stress' tips from the I've-got-everything-together-why-don't-you people seem to do a little too late:
- Start your shopping early. (Too late)
- Eat in moderation. (You’ve already pigged out)
- Spend less. (You tried. Really tried.)
- Don't say 'yes' to every family gathering. (But how could you say 'no'?)

And the tension is that by this point, Christmas Eve, all the ‘how to avoid stress’ tips from the I’ve-got-everything-together-why-don’t-you people seem too little too late:
- Start your shopping early. (Some of you are reading this on your phone at the mall. There are three more shopping hours till Christmas, right?)
- Eat in moderation. (But you’ve already been to six Christmas parties, and Christmas has barely begun.)
- Spend less. (You tried. Really tried.)
- Don’t say ‘yes’ to every family gathering. (But how could you say ‘no’? And now your holiday is anything but a vacation.)
Jesus arrived on the planet not because we had it all together, but because we didn’t.
Jesus wasn’t born into a world where everyone got along perfectly.
Jesus didn’t come for us because we were exceptionally well organized and on budget.
Jesus didn’t come into a world where families were perfectly behaved.
Jesus didn’t arrive on earth because spouses got along beautifully and never argued.
Jesus didn’t move into a world where people worshipped without ever doubting.
He came into a world that desperately needed GRACE. What if your imperfect Christmas is actually a front row seat to grace?Grace is a much misunderstood concept. It’s never earned. It’s not deserved. Because if it were, it wouldn’t be grace. Grace is simply undeserved love. Love that came to you not because you’ve got it oh-so-together, but because you don’t. That’s Christmas. That’s the Gospel.
