Sign up for the New Directory!
We are doing a Membership Directory this year! This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to draw closer together as a church family. There will be two times in the year that we'll be taking photos for the directly. The first one is coming up pretty fast. It will January 27th and 28th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The next time will be in March. You will need to sign up for a time slot. The best way to do that is going online to do it. The link to the sign-up page can be found on the HUMC website in the bottom right hand corner. You can also just type in the link: https://booknow-lifetouch.appointment-plus.com/y7ps8130/. You can also call Lifetouch at 760.576.8393. You can also sign up in person as there will be a table in the courtyard at select times. The Times of Hope and the HUMC website have this and more information. I'd love to see 100% of our member's with a picture in the directory. Thanks!

main week of photography appointments will be the second week of March. If you will be gone that

MISSIONS CORNER
A sincere thank you to the congregation and the
Missions and Outreach Committee for your generous
commitment to the missions work of the
church throughout the year. Just a few of our recent
projects include: 136 red bags of food donated
over the Christmas season; $6,387 donated
to various causes at Alternative Christmas; welcome
baskets, gift bags, and financial aid given to
the Hope for Injured Warriors project. Reflections
on the latter from Norma Dahlvig are as follows:
“Oh my, those recovering at Freedom Station located
on 28th Street in Golden Hill were in awe as
6 welcome baskets and 9 gift bags arrived at Freedom
Station. Over $3000 was given to send the
injured, who are able to travel, home to spend
Christmas with their loved ones. All this was
made possible because the people of Hope care
and share. Thank you for your generosity that
made this all possible. A big thank you to Pastor
Brian and Pastor Drew also for your continuing
support of our service men and women.”
Hunger does not take a holiday of course, and Interfaith
Community Services has let us know that
their stocks are running low. Thanks to Zach Askins
we now have a new food cart to receive donations.
Requests from Interfaith include the
CONFIRMATION 2018
Any youth 7th grade or above interested in being confirmed this year should contact Lorrie Frost to sign
up for the Confirmation class. We will explore what it means to be a Christian and a Methodist in their
lives today. The class will meet for twelve weeks during the 9:00 Sunday morning service, starting on
February 11th. youthlorrie@gmail.com
following: macaroni and cheese; spaghetti sauce
and dried pasta; pasta meals; hearty soups; canned
beef stew, beans, chili, meats or tuna; canned fruits
or vegetables; rice and dried beans; peanut butter
and jelly; microwave foods and meals; pop-lid
canned foods; individually packaged snacks like
nuts, granola bars, raisins. And the list continues,
please see posted list on the bulletin board and
bring what you can as regularly as you can. (This
is an excellent project to involve the children in
throughout the year!)
The January missions focus is Children of the
Promise, an orphanage in Tijuana ministering especially
to street children. The orphanage does
wonderful work helping children and teens into a
better life than had been possible for them: please
pray for them and also give generously.
As we enter the new year 2018 we can enable this
year to be a better one for those in need of our
help. In giving of ourselves and our resources, we
bless others and discover blessing in the giving.
May God bless you, and the Church throughout
the world, that we may more and more be channels
of God’s love and grace in this new year. (All
are also welcome to attend our next meeting on
Jan 29th, 7pm, at the church).

MUSIC NOTES
This Month in worship ...
The music ministry wishes everyone a Happy New
Year! What are some of our plans? As we rest and
catch our breath from the Christmas season, we now
turn our voices over to prepare for weekly worship,
the Lenten season, a concert, and Holy Week. The
choirs will share some old favorite anthems this
month, and the band is debuting a new song called,
“Our God,” by Chris Tomlin. Some of the offertories
this month include Annabelle Terbetski on viola,
and Beth Jones & Wendy Kallen on a 4-hand piano
piece. Then don’t miss the Axios Youth Choir
singing “For Good” from the musical Wicked on
Feb. 4! We welcome you to come and join the
music ministry at any time! Contact our director,
Wendy Kallen, at 858.722.8572, our choir manager,
Ginny Lorenz, at 858.354.3939, or our children and
youth director, Kathy Askins, at katstrich@sbcglobal.net.
CONCERT POSTPONED!
April Fisher, soprano, and John Evans, pianist,
would have been performing our first concert of our
2018 Concert Series. However, Mr. Evans had an
unfortunate accident at home and broke his hand.
They are devastated that they cannot be here this
month, but they would love to reschedule for July
this year. More info to come as the hand heals!

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD
HOME ...
We love your children and are so glad you bring
them to Church! However, as we enter the cold
and flu season, please help us keep Hope a healthy
place by observing these guidelines (taken from
“When to Keep Your Sick Child Home From
School,” by Dr. Lisa Dana) for when to keep your
child home from church:
• Fever. If your child has a fever or has had a
fever within the last 24 hours, even if she
wakes up with a lot of energy and seems fine,
the fever could return later in the day and she
may be contagious.
• Rash. Chicken pox, impetigo, strep, and viral
infections all present as a rash and are all
contagious.
• Vomiting & Diarrhea. In addition to feeling
awful and being embarrassed from an accident,
your child is contagious with these symptoms
or if he has had these symptoms in the last 24
hours.
• Cough. Persistent coughing can indicate
bronchitis, pneumonia, whooping cough, or
asthma. Unless your child has a diagnosis of
asthma, please keep her home as coughing
spreads germs.
• Pink Eye. Pink eye is very contagious. Even if
your child’s eyes do not have a discharge, but
are rimmed in pink and swollen or inflamed,
please keep him home.
• Ear Pain. Children with ear pain do not feel
good! Take her to the doctor for treatment and
then keep her home until she is well.
• Sore Throat. A sore throat may be Strep
Throat and Strep Throat is contagious. Your
child should see the doctor and if he does
in- deed have Strep Throat, he needs to stay
home until he has been on antibiotics for
24 hours.
