. . . From Our President
Dear Fellow Members:
Happy Chanukah! On behalf of Congregation
Beth Israel’s Board of Directors, I would like to wish you a very Happy
Chanukah.
As some of you know, I have young kids,
lots of them. Recently, they were learning about compound words. As we know, a compound
word is made up of two words when placed together create another word. They had
to find two compound words from their handout and come up with three compound
words on their own. Coincidentally, they all came up with “Thanksgiving” as one
of their words; I am sure that the time of year had something to do with that.
Thanksgiving is a highly prominent
secular holiday, celebrated by most Americans in November. While Thanksgiving
has its foundation in the fall Holy Day of Succot, as American Jews, we celebrate
Thanksgiving in November as well, but we seem to celebrate both parts of that
compound word year around.
Jews in America have much to be
“Thankful” for. I can’t think of any better time in history to be a Jew, and
perhaps not a better country in the history of Diaspora Jewry than the United
States.
While not perfect, we are living in a
time and place where, generally, we can live our life as Jews without fear of discrimination,
and Jews have risen to not only financial and political prominence, but have
excelled in many other areas; Jews have disproportionately won the Nobel
Prizes, and have been important creators in the arts and technology. Yes, we
have much
to be thankful for indeed.
As to the second word that makes up our
compound word, “Giving,” we Jews seem to be giving all the time. Our mandate of
Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, dictates that we give our time, our energy,
our financial resources and our care, among other items.
You don’t have to look far to see many
wonderful instances of “giving” by Jews in our community and in our world.
Jews, especially here in America seem to be forever standing up for what is
right, donating generously to fund new programs and buildings, lending a
helping hand to those less fortunate, and simply helping one another. Our
Congregation continues to be at the forefront of giving in our community. Have
some time to give? Having successfully completed our Thanksgiving Meal Delivery
Project and our annual Holiday Gift Project through JFCS, here are the next two
giving opportunities at CBI:
x Our Annual Mitzvah Day of community
service is Sunday, December 8th
x Kol Isha and BITY are preparing a meal
for the Ronald
McDonald House on December 15th
Thank you very much for your continued
support of Congregation Beth Israel.
