Cathe Laurie – Virtue for Women – Wednesday, 22 January 2014 “heart
felt garland” by Brittany Laurie Reenan
I love to make easy crafts for my home for the holidays! I will
set them up a few weeks before each special day and they give our family a warm
feeling, adding color to the rooms we decorate! The kids especially love this
as they anticipate the special things to come and we weave the story of Jesus
into each holiday, no matter if it’s a religious one or not! “For God so loved
the world He gave His only begotten son that whoever believes in Him shall have
everlasting life.” What better meaning to Valentine’s Day is there than that?
Supplies:
Felt in chosen color
Heart-shaped PDF or hand-drawn shape on paper
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Scissors
So the girls and I began cutting! We traced a heart and an arrow
to desired size and taped them together. I chose to place our arrows
horizontally to create a nice chain to sew through, but this project works by
connecting any two points on your shape, so it doesn’t have to be symmetrical.
After I taped together my desired shape, I then traced and cut
it out of felt in a few different colors. For the length of garland I wanted, I
needed 12 hearts. Because the shapes and sizes vary, just estimate your own!
The next step is to sew together your garland. To do this, I
simply left about 6 inches of unused thread before I started my stitch through
the first heart. Once my stitching ran through the length of my heart, I added
another heart into the machine and kept the running stitch going through all 12
of my felt hearts.
At the end I left an additional 6 inches of thread. This extra
thread on both ends is to use as anchors if I wish to tie my garland to the
mantle or somewhere else in my home. This project is so fun and easily
adaptable, you might find yourself making a garland each month with different
themes. I just love them!
