Luke 10: The Return of the Seventy-Two
17 When the seventy-two[a] followers returned, they were excited and said, “Lord, even the demons obeyed when we spoke in your name!”
18 Jesus told them:
I saw Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. 19 I have given you the power to trample on snakes and scorpions and to defeat the power of your enemy Satan. Nothing can harm you. 20 But don’t be happy because evil spirits obey you. Be happy that your names are written in heaven!
Jesus Thanks His Father
21 At that same time, Jesus felt the joy that comes from the Holy Spirit,[b] and he said:
My Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I am grateful that you hid all this from wise and educated people and showed it to ordinary people. Yes, Father, that is what pleased you.
22 My Father has given me everything, and he is the only one who knows the Son. The only one who really knows the Father is the Son. But the Son wants to tell others about the Father, so that they can know him too.
23 Jesus then turned to his disciples and said to them in private, “You are really blessed to see what you see! 24 Many prophets and kings were eager to see what you see and to hear what you hear. But I tell you that they did not see or hear.”[Footnotes:

Daily Devotions:
Verse 18
[18] And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
I beheld Satan — That is, when ye went forth, I saw the kingdom of Satan, which was highly exalted, swiftly and suddenly cast down.
Verse 19
[19] Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
I give you power — That is, I continue it to you: and nothing shall hurt you - Neither the power, nor the subtilty of Satan.
Verse 20
[20] Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
Rejoice not so much that the devils are subject to you, as that your names are written in heaven - Reader, so is thine, if thou art a true, believer. God grant it may never be blotted out!
Verse 21
[21] In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
Lord of heaven and earth — In both of which thy kingdom stands, and that of Satan is destroyed.
That thou hast hid these things — He rejoiced not in the destruction of the wise and prudent, but in the display of the riches of God's grace to others, in such a manner as reserves to Him the entire glory of our salvation, and hides pride from man. Matthew 11:25.
Verse 22
[22] All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
Who the Son is — Essentially one with the Father: who the Father is - How great, how wise, how good!
Verse 23
[23] And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:

Luke 10:The Work of the Seventy-Two Followers
1 Later the Lord chose seventy-two[a] other followers and sent them out two by two to every town and village where he was about to go. 2 He said to them:
A large crop is in the fields, but there are only a few workers. Ask the Lord in charge of the harvest to send out workers to bring it in. 3 Now go, but remember, I am sending you like lambs into a pack of wolves. 4 Don’t take along a moneybag or a traveling bag or sandals. And don’t waste time greeting people on the road.[b] 5 As soon as you enter a home, say, “God bless this home with peace.” 6 If the people living there are peace-loving, your prayer for peace will bless them. But if they are not peace-loving, your prayer will return to you. 7 Stay with the same family, eating and drinking whatever they give you, because workers are worth what they earn. Don’t move around from house to house.
8 If the people of a town welcome you, eat whatever they offer. 9 Heal their sick and say, “God’s kingdom will soon be here!”[c]
10 But if the people of a town refuse to welcome you, go out into the street and say, 11 “We are shaking the dust from our feet[d] as a warning to you. And you can be sure that God’s kingdom will soon be here!”[e] 12 I tell you that on the day of judgment the people of Sodom will get off easier than the people of that town!
The Unbelieving Towns
13 You people of Chorazin are in for trouble! You people of Bethsaida are also in for trouble! If the miracles that took place in your towns had happened in Tyre and Sidon, the people there would have turned to God long ago. They would have dressed in sackcloth and put ashes on their heads.[f] 14 On the day of judgment the people of Tyre and Sidon will get off easier than you will. 15 People of Capernaum, do you think you will be honored in heaven? Well, you will go down to hell!
16 My followers, whoever listens to you is listening to me. Anyone who says “No” to you is saying “No” to me. And anyone who says “No” to me is really saying “No” to the one who sent me.[Footnotes:
10.1 seventy-two: Some manuscripts have “seventy.” According to Jewish tradition, there were seventy nations on earth. But the ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament has “seventy-two” in place of “seventy.” Jesus probably chose this number of followers to show that his message was for everyone in the world.
10.4 waste time greeting people on the road: In those days a polite greeting could take a long time.
10.9 will soon be here: Or “is already here.”
10.11 shaking the dust from our feet: This was a way of showing rejection.
10.11 will soon be here: Or “is already here.”
10.13 dressed in sackcloth. . . ashes on their heads: This was one way that people showed how sorry they were for their sins.]

Jesus Thanks His Father
21 At that same time, Jesus felt the joy that comes from the Holy Spirit,[b] and he said:

10.17 seventy-two: See the note at 10.1.
10.21 the Holy Spirit: Some manuscripts have “his spirit.”]
After Jesus sent out the 70 disciples to do as He has showed and told them, they came back and shared what was the result of their or God's efforts. They responded in amazement that they were able to accomplish all they did in Jesus' Name. Jesus began to share that they should not be happy with what they are doing by God's power that they are part of the Kingdom of God in Heaven and being witnesses on earth. This redemption is our only reason to be happy and joyful. To often, we try to be happy and joyful with what God is doing in our lives by all the material possessions that we have acquired, but too often the many people around the world who live in poverty or even being persecuted are more happier and joyful than we ae. This goes back to what Jesus told the 70 disciples when they reported back with their stories of success against Satan and the world's ways. What characters do you relate to? How do you maintain you happiness and joyful even in hard times? How will you live out what God has done for you in your redemption and eternal life? May we sing this song written as a poem in a testimony for Rhea Miller:
"I'd Rather Have Jesus" by Rhea Miller
1. I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands;
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand
Refrain:
Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway;
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.
2. I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause;
I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame;
I’d rather be true to His holy name
Refrain:
Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway;
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.
3. He’s fairer than lilies
of rarest bloom;
He’s sweeter than honey from out the comb;
He’s all that my hungering spirit needs;
I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead
Refrain:
Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway;
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.
