Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
Dear Friend,
 Dr. Martin Luther King was born on Jan. 15, 1929 and many of us will mark the day with a holiday from school or work. The Nobel Peace Prize winner dedicated his life to seeking racial equality in our nation through nonviolence and civil disobedience. He gave his life for the cause when he was felled by an assassin's bullet on April 4, 1968.
Dr. King asked people to commit “to the noble struggle for equal rights.” Each year, across the country rather than just taking a holiday we choose to honor this American hero's legacy by coming together to offer aid to our neighbors and communities through a day of service.
This year, I will join volunteers from the Human Rights Campaign to pack care bags for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender homeless youth served by San Diego Youth Services. At least 40% of the homeless young people on our streets are LGBT, according to estimates. They urgently need basic items to help them survive.
I invite you to support the cause by dropping off donations from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Lafayette Hotel, 2223 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego. For more information, please visit this website.
The most-needed items are:
- New and unused thick socks, underwear, athletic clothing and shoes
- Unopened travel-sized toiletries, including toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, dental floss, lip balm, lotion and wet wipes
- Hats and gloves
- Bus passes, phone cards and gift cards
- Batteries
- Drinks and non-perishable snacks
