Alabaster
An Alabaster Story from the A-P Region
In the Solomon Islands,
Alabaster offerings are given in February and September.
The district is always excited at the opportunity to participate in
this worldwide effort to raise funds to assist local believers in the building of churches, parsonages, and district centers.
In 2009, Osborn Fagea, the Solomon Islands district NMI president, knew that ordering the pre-made Alabaster offering boxes would be too expensive. So he creatively used what was in his hands. Literally. He led the district in collecting plastic water bottles to which labels were attached. The plastic "Alabaster Bottles" were distributed at the district assembly several months in advance.
That year during September, the bottles were collected in the congregations across the Solomon Island District. Osborne led the way in preparing for the offering in his own church, Zion Church of the Nazarene.
Prior to the Sunday when his church would be collecting their bottles, Osborn decorated a wheelbarrow and placed some building materials in it. On the designated Sunday, the members of the congregation marched by and placed in the wheelbarrow their water bottles of money, which they had been collecting over the past 6 months.
Osborn was not sure what to expect in the way of an offering goal. Many of the members were unemployed with their only income being from the produce that they sold from their gardens. But when the offering was received and the water bottles were emptied, the amount collected that morning was equivalent to an entire month's wages for the average manual laborer!
The offering had special significance for the Zion church since their own building had been constructed with the assistance of Alabaster Funds.[By George Miller on October 19, 2009]

Developing Leaders by Stan Toler  The Power of Investing in Leaders
Why Training Trumps Recruitment Every Time
As a leader, one of your primary challenges is to identify and recruit the leaders who will staff your team. But recruiting is just the first step. To be effective, each of those leaders must be trained-and become responsible for training others.
That's why equipping leaders must become a background activity in your organization: something that's always taking place behind the scenes. Finding great leaders is important, but keeping them informed, equipped, and motivated is what really pays dividends.
Here are four types of training every leader on your team needs to receive.
1. Information
Management decisions are made based on information in the form of market research, data analysis, financial reporting, and cultural trends, to name a few. That means your leaders must be updated regularly through briefings, reporting, trade publications, and other forms of information sharing.
If you fail to inform your leaders of what's happening or what matters, they'll be making decisions based on yesterday's assessment of reality. Keep the team up to date.
2. Instruction
The culture of any organization resides in its process and procedures-the way things are done. New leaders must learn "the way" of operating. Regular refreshers are also important. Culture drifts, just like vision.
3. Equipping
Most jobs require specialized knowledge that a leader may or may not bring in the door. I'm talking about anything from specific computer software to operating equipment and even government regulations. Invest the money in training on the front end. It will save you in the long run.
4. Inspiration
The football "huddle" isn't just to call the plays; it's also a time to fire up the team. There is an excitement that results from getting together to be reminded of the mission, celebrate victories, and dream about the future. Call your leaders apart for times of reflection, instruction, and motivation. It's like putting fuel in their tank.
Recruit leaders with the attitude and vision to accomplish something great, then give them the training needed to achieve it. You'll be amazed at what they can do!
I'd love to hear your ideas for training new leaders. Share your answer on Twitter or Facebook.-Stan Toler

Tribal tension can be an all-too-familiar occurrence in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.
This past week an urgent request for prayer was received from the Kudjip Mission Station Team as a dispute broke out concerning the death of the son of a local leader. While it hasn't directly impacted the Kudjip Mission Station, it has drawn many of the hospital national staff into very difficult situations.
Please take a moment to read this specific prayer request, commit to pray, and to share it with your churches this Sunday. Prayer does make a difference!

Urgent Prayer Request – Tribal Dispute North of Kudjip Mission Station – Papua New Guinea.
Kudjip Nazarene Mission Station, Papua New Guinea: Please be praying for the effects of a tribal fight taking place in the area north of the Nazarene Hospital in Jiwaka Province.
A local leader’s son was killed at Banz yesterday, which is a town about 15 minutes away from the Mission Station. We are told the man started some disturbance at the market there. He was attacked by a group of people and died as a result of his injuries.

Tribal fighting is an all-to-common occurrence in PNG.
Today, many young men from the Kuma Tribe (one of the tribes neighboring the Mission Station) blocked a bridge into the area. Many of our Hospital staff that live in the Banz area, could not come to work today because of this. We are now hearing that many of the Kuma men went up to the Banz market and surrounded the area. They have burned down buildings and houses in that area. Many of our staff and Nazarene church members are trapped there with this fighting – feeling that their own properties and lives are threatened.
There is a lot of potential for the fight to grow and spread, affecting many others as both sides feel wronged.
The Nazarene Hospital itself currently remains unaffected directly, but this will affect some of our staff and surrounding community.
This is truly a spiritual battle! Many of our project workers are from the Kuma tribe. Many recently gave their lives to Christ this past weekend at a spiritual retreat that the hospital held for them. We even told those at the retreat that often, immediately after coming to Christ, there will be some big temptation. It has certainly turned out that way.
The Nazarene Hospital has this week had some community tension over land issues and now today is a time that many in our community are having to decide to stay home and be a comfort to a grieving family… or go join a tribal fight that will only build destruction and death. Satan knows there are no winners in these fights – both sides lose.
Please pray for our community leaders, these young men, police/authorities, etc., that they will do the right thing. Pray for the protection of innocent lives and property.[Submitted: Dr. Scott Dooley – Nazarene Hospital Administrator & Rev. Harmon Schmelzenbach, Melanesia South Pacific Field Strategy Coordinator.

Extreme Impact Work & Witness Teams Needed for Saipan- Typhoon Recovery Work!
Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands

On Sunday, August 2nd at approximately 11pm (Guam time), Typhoon Soudelor passed over Saipan, located in the Northern Mariana Islands, bringing devastating results.
Now, over one month later, the island is still working to recover. Currently there are houses to re-roof, outdoor kitchens to be rebuilt, and lots of debris that needs to be removed. Funds are provided for rebuilding, it is the "person power" that is needed now. This is an excellent opportunity for teams from all over the world.

Air quality levels across much of the Sealands Field have reached record-setting (poor) levels.
While the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in Singapore has been in the "unhealthy" range of 100-200, some parts of Indonesia have been much worse. In Sumatra, Indonesia, the PSI level hit a record 984 on September 14, causing thousands to relocate to safer places.
Please commit to pray for the resolution of this life-impacting situation. Follow this link for more information. But in the Church There is Strength to stand Firm, Giving the Community the Strength to Grow!
Taytay, Philippines

What began as a dream to impact the lives of students from an urban-poor community next to the walls of Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary, became a reality this week!
Enoch Tee, a Mission Corps Volunteer has been working with the students of the Rowenas community for several months. His mission has been to impact their lives through the method of art.

This past week, the vision for life-impact was realized as more than 200 people came out to celebrate the accomplishments of these students at the first-ever Rowenas Art Exhibition.

But In The Church There is Strength to Stand Firm, Giving the Community the Strength to Grow!
September 19, 2015 Todd A Leave a comment

Taytay, Rizal, Philippines: It was a big night. The mood-lit event room filled up with guests. The stage lights cascaded on the faces of those admiring banners about the Rowenas Art classes.

They lined up to read the childrens’ quotes alongside their drawings. The words described the challenges of living in an urban-poor informal-settlement next to the seminary. The words also highlighted the incredible difference that God had made in their lives because of the work of Christ, His church, and the simple joys of an art class.
“The church is the one that can help me fly high for my goals … The clouds represent problems and storms the whole community feels. But in the church there is strength to stand firm, giving the community the strength to grow.”- J.W. -Young pre-teen Rowenas artist – translated from Tagalog.

Students showcased at this event.World Mission Communications Asia-Pacific (WMC-AP) graphic designer and Mission Corps volunteer, Enoch Tee, had months earlier, along with his volunteers, envisioned this moment taking place as a way to impact the lives of children living in the Rowenas Community. After much hard work and investment, the event was held on Thursday evening, September 17th, on the campus of Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary (APNTS).

It truly was a model of community and ministry cooperation as fellow Mission Corps volunteer and
NTS 365m student, Aisling Zweigle, River of Life Community Fellowship Pastor, Jackson Natividad, APNTS, and others, worked together to see this first-ever historic night come to fruition.

A child on the pathway in the Barangay of Rowenas
With God’s help and the hard work of many devoted volunteers, this night celebrated the holistic outreach and spiritual discipleship at work in the
Gintong Aral Development Project (Rowenas). In addition to giving the students a chance to showcase their drawings, dancing, singing, speeches and growth, it also served as a creative fundraiser for future art programs and mentoring.
More than 200 people showed up to help celebrate the accomplishments of these children.
Thank you to the some 200 people who came out to help celebrate the accomplishments of these children from Rowenas!
How has God called you to impact your community? Are you willing to answer the call to make a difference?

Perceptions,Turning Negatives into Positives!
Asia-Pacific Region

Narrow minded, judgmental, disengaged from the real problems of the world! Have you ever heard these words used to describe Christians?
How can we rise above these perceptions, to living lives that have true "transformative impact" in our communities? Lives that draw people to the source of our joy, courage, and hope, rather than push them away?
Take a moment to read Grant Zweigle's thoughts on these perceptions at his blog

To Nazarenes
around the world:
"Developing the Future" is the theme of the 2015 Thanksgiving, or Thank Offering. As we remember the Lord's unfailing love, the psalmist calls on us to "sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy" (Psalm 107:22). We join you in prayer and preparation for this annual emphasis in the Church of the Nazarene. Through this offering given to the World Evangelism Fund, we do more together than we ever could alone..
