Sunday's Sermon & Scripture:
"New School Clothes"
Ephesians 6:10-20
Ephesians 6:10 Finally, grow powerful in union with the Lord, in union with his mighty strength! 11 Use all the armor and weaponry that God provides, so that you will be able to stand against the deceptive tactics of the Adversary. 12 For we are not struggling against human beings, but against the rulers, authorities and cosmic powers governing this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm. 13 So take up every piece of war equipment God provides; so that when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist; and when the battle is won, you will still be standing. 14 Therefore, stand! Have the belt of truth buckled around YOUR waist,[Ephesians 6:14 Isaiah 11:5] put on righteousness for a breastplate,[Ephesians 6:14 Isaiah 59:17] 15 and wear on your feet the readiness that comes from the Good News of shalom.[Ephesians 6:15 Isaiah 52:7] 16 Always carry the shield of trust, with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the Evil One. 17 And take the helmet of deliverance;[Ephesians 6:17 Isaiah 59:17] along with the sword given by the Spirit, that is, the Word of God; 18 as you pray at all times, with all kinds of prayers and requests, in the Spirit, vigilantly and persistently, for all God’s people.
19 And pray for me, too, that whenever I open my mouth, the words will be given to me to be bold in making known the secret of the Good News, 20 for which I am an ambassador in CHAINS. Pray that I may speak boldly, the way I should.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Ephesians 6:10-20
Verse 10
[10] Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Brethren — This is the only place in this epistle where he uses this compellation. Soldiers frequently use it to each other in the field.
Be strong — Nothing less will suffice for such a fight: to be weak, and remain so, is the way to perish.
In the power of his might — A very uncommon expression, plainly denoting what great ASSISTANCE we need as if his might would not do, it must be the powerful exertion of his might.
Verse 11
[11] Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Put on the whole armour of God — The Greek word means a complete suit of armour. Believers are said to put on the girdle, breastplate, shoes; to take the shield of faith, and sword of the Spirit.
The whole armour — As if the armour would scarce do, it must be the whole armour. This is repeated, verse 13, because of the strength and subtilty of our adversaries, and because of an "evil day" of sore trial being at hand.
Verse 12
[12] For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against PRINCIPALITIES, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
For our wrestling is not only, not chiefly, against flesh and blood - Weak men, or fleshly appetites.
But against principalities, against powers — The mighty princes of all the infernal legions. And great is their power, and that likewise of those legions whom they command.
Against the rulers of the world — Perhaps these principalities and powers remain mostly in the citadel of their kingdom of darkness. But there are other evil spirits who range abroad, to whom the provinces of the world are committed.
Of the darkness — This is chiefly spiritual darkness.
Of this age — Which prevails during the present state of things.
Against wicked spirits — Who CONTINUALLY oppose faith, love, holiness, either by force or fraud; and labour to infuse unbelief, pride, idolatry malice, envy, anger, hatred.
In heavenly places — Which were once their abode, and which they still aspire to, as far as they are permitted.
Verse 13
[13] Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
In the evil day — The war is perpetual; but the fight is one day less, another more, violent. The evil day is either at the approach of death, or in life; may be longer or shorter and admits of numberless varieties.
And having done all, to stand — That ye may still keep on YOUR armour, still stand upon your guard, still WATCH and pray; and thus ye will be enabled to endure unto the end, and stand with joy before the face of the Son of Man.
Verse 14
[14] Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
Having your loins girt about — That ye may be ready for every motion.
With truth — Not only with the truths of the gospel, but with "truth in the inward parts;" for without this all our knowledge of divine truth will prove but a poor girdle "in the evil day." So our Lord is described, Isaiah 11:5. And as a girded man is always ready to go on, so this seems to intimate an obedient heart, a ready will. Our Lord adds to the loins girded, the lights burning, Luke 12:35; showing that watching and ready obedience are the inseparable companions of faith and love.
And having on the breastplate of righteousness — The righteousness of a spotless purity, in which Christ will present us faultless before God, through the merit of his own blood. With this breastplate our Lord is described, Isaiah 59:17. In the breast is the seat of conscience, which is guarded by righteousness. No armour for the back is mentioned. We are always to face our enemies.
Verse 15
[15] And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel — Let this be always ready to direct and confirm you in every step. This part of the armour, for the feet, is needful, considering what a journey we have to go; what a race to run. Our feet must be so shod, that our footsteps slip not. To order our life and conversation aright, we are prepared by the gospel blessing, the peace and love of God ruling in the heart, Colossians 3:14,15. By this only can we tread the rough ways, surmount our difficulties, and hold out to the end.
Verse 16
[16] Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
Above or over all - As a sort of universal covering to every other part of the armour itself, continually exercise a strong and lively faith. This you may use as a shield, which will quench all the fiery darts, the furious temptations, violent and sudden injections of the devil.
Verse 17
[17] And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
And take for an helmet the hope of salvation — 1 Thessalonians 5:8. The head is that part which is most carefully to be defended. One stroke here may prove fatal. The armour for this is the hope of salvation. The lowest degree of this hope is a confidence that God will work the whole work of faith in us; the highest is a full assurance of future glory, added to the experimental knowledge of pardoning love. Armed with this helmet, the hope of the joy set before him, Christ "endured the cross, and despised the shame,"Hebrews 12:2.
And the sword of the Spirit, the word of God — This Satan cannot withstand, when it is edged and wielded by faith. Till now our armour has been only defensive. But we are to attack Satan, as well as secure ourselves; the shield in one hand, and the sword in the other. Whoever fights with the powers of hell will need both. He that is covered with armour from head to foot, and neglects this, will be foiled after all. This whole description shows us how great a thing it is to be a Christian. The want of any one thing makes him incomplete. Though he has his loins girt with truth, righteousness for a breastplate, his feet shod with the preparation of the gospel, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit; yet one thing he wants after all. What is that? It follows,
Verse 18
[18] Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Praying always — At all times, and on every occasion, in midst of all employments, inwardly praying without ceasing.
By the Spirit — Through the influence of the Holy Spirit.
With all prayer — With all sort of prayer, public, private, mental, vocal. Some are careful in respect of one kind of prayer, and negligent in others. If we would have the petitions we ask, let us use all. Some there are who use only mental prayer or ejaculations, and think they are in a state of grace, and use a way of worship, far superior to any other: but such only fancy themselves to be above what is really above them; it requiring far more grace to be enabled to pour out a fervent and continued prayer, than to offer up mental aspirations.
And supplication — Repeating and urging our prayer, as Christ did in the garden.
And watching — Inwardly attending on God, to know his will, to gain power to do it, and to attain to the blessings we desire.
With all perseverance — Continuing to the end in this holy exercise.
And supplication for all the saints — Wrestling in fervent, continued intercession for others, especially for the faithful, that they may do all the will of God, and be steadfast to the end. Perhaps we receive few answers to prayer, because we do not intercede enough for others.
Verse 19
[19] And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,
By the opening my mouth — Removing every inward and every outward hinderance.
Verse 20
[20] For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
An ambassador in bonds — The ambassadors of men usually appear in great pomp. How differently does the ambassador of Christ appear!

Sermon Story "God Anointed" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 23 August 2015 with Scripture - Ephesians 6:10 Finally, grow powerful in union with the Lord, in union with his mighty strength! We come realize that the people who have been raised in the church or those who have attended Vacation Bible School have heard the children's song about putting on the armor of God while some may never of heard of this concept of putting on the armor other than in the Military armor. We come to realize or think that Paul is sharing this with the people in Ephesus to continue in the faith learning all they can about God to keep from being tempted to sin or desire to sin against God. There is a concept here that come to mind as I have been around people in poverty, people who have immigrated from their home land for whatever reason, people who have had a different sexual orientation than what society is used to, people who have been discriminated against because of their skin color, or people who have been discriminated because they are differently abled. I have been around all of these kind of people and realized that each of them are people created by God and are made in His Image. There is another aspect that I have noticed is that each of these people have placed their hope in Jesus and have put His armor on to stay faithful to their salvation and continue to walk in their faith until Jesus comes back or calls each of them back to live with Him in Heaven or the Kingdom of God. Where have you seen this in the people which have been hearing about? Have you included or excluded each of them from your life or church? How we you come to God today? We come now to receive the Body of Jesus to eat and to drink His Blood in our participation of the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist to receive God's blessing from our repentance of our sins. We come to receive the elements and the blessing singing the Hymn "ARMOR OF GOD (Put on the Armor of God)" by Brian M. Howard
Chorus:
Put it on put it on
The armor of God
Put it on put it on
The armor of God
Everyday we need the armor of God
Put on the armor of God
Put on the armor of God
Verse 1
Wear the belt of truth around your waist
Over your heart goes a righteous breast plate
On your feet wear the Gospel of peace
For the enemy's arrows
Use the shield of faith
Chorus:
Put it on put it on
The armor of God
Put it on put it on
The armor of God
Everyday we need the armor of God
Put on the armor of God
Put on the armor of God
Verse 2
The helmet of salvation goes on your head
So when the battle gets hard you can stand
Use the sword of the Spirit
It is God's Word
Use the sword of the Spirit
And stand, stand, stand on His Word
Chorus:
Put it on put it on
The armor of God
Put it on put it on
The armor of God
Everyday we need the armor of God
Put on the armor of God
Put on the armor of God
Verse 3
The battle is not against flesh and blood
But spiritual forces so put YOUR armor on
Stand in the battle and stand for the truth

Everyday God's armor will help you
Chorus:
Put it on put it on
The armor of God
Put it on put it on
The armor of God
Everyday we need the armor of God
Put on the armor of God
Put on the armor of God
"The Whole Armor of God" by Steven K. Jones
The Whole Armor of God
1. What soldier ENTERS life’s battle field,
without a sword, without a shield?
I take my sword and shield each day
when I kneel down and humbly pray.
2. I take my place in the ranks of youth.
I learn his word and I live the truth.
Prepared to do my part in this war.
I know what it is I’m fighting for.
With helmet in place, with sword in hand;
With the shield of faith, we are worthy to stand,
With the gospel of peace our feet are shod.
Valiant and strong in the armor of God.
We have on the armor of God
3. Sometimes I stumble beneath the blow.
My heart grows troubled my courage
When fear whispers that I cannot WIN.
I put on His strength and rise again.
With helmet in place, with sword in hand;
With the shield of faith, we are worthy to stand
With the gospel of peace our feet are shod.
Valiant and strong in the armor of God.
We have on the armor of God.
With helmet in place, with sword in hand;
With the shield of faith we are worthy to stand.
With the gospel of peace our feet are shod.
Valiant and strong in the armor of God
We have on the armor of God.

United Methodist Communications: Communicating Faith for 75 Years
In 2015, United Methodist Communications celebrates its 75th year of telling the church's story, both within the church and to the world.
Though it has evolved through many name and structural changes, the denomination's communication agency has initiated a very long list of "firsts" throughout its 75-year history.

From our hike this week, in Rocky Mountain National Park (Jonah and my dad are on the far left of the frame...)
Grand Vistas, Big Pictures
It's my first day back in the office after a week of vacation with my family; we went to Colorado to visit my parents, and see my brother. Since I was a child, my family has vacationed in Rocky Mountain National Park; when I visit, I feel at home. The beauty of the peaks and the lakes, the wildflowers and the skies remind me of the wonder and beauty of creation. Perhaps you also have a place that restores your soul, and expands your view of the world.
As we get closer to the beginning of a new school year (some of our schools have already started!), I treasure the chance to remember that I'm a part of something so much bigger than me. While I'm usually busy taking care of the things right in front of me, it is helpful to rest in the assurance that all of what I see and know is but a small part of a much grander reality.
And if the mountains make me feel that way, I find the expansive night sky truly incredible. God is so much bigger than we can perceive, more complex that we can understand, and more beautiful that we can imagine.
May you begin this new school year (even if you're far beyond your school years) with a reminder of how grand God is, how enduring the church of Christ is, and how powerful is the gospel.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

Fall Sermon Series and Study: First
Putting God First in Faith and Finances

During the month of September, our church will hear about God's generosity and our response as we experience our stewardship program, first: putting GOD first in living and giving, developed by author and pastor Mike Slaughter of Ginghamsburg Church. There will be opportunities in worship, in small groups, in youth and children's classes, and in devotions that can be used at church or at home.
We are made in God's image and are meant to be creators of life and hope, not the consumers of our culture's shiny gods. We have the ability to change the world and create a legacy that will live forever in the lives of generations to follow. That legacy starts when each of us takes the hard steps of financial discipline and fulfilling the call to generosity that God has placed in all of us.

Parking Reminder: If you are able, we encourage you to park at the Wells Fargo bank on Sunday mornings, and walk across the street, reserving the parking lot for those with mobility challenges or for new visitors. We also have a bike rack on the patio, for those who choose to bike to church. Thanks for your consideration.

The Lay Looker, Bob Peterson
a view from the pew from a longtime member of our church
"I know it's been a couple of weeks since we saw the 101 Dalmatians show put on after drama camp by our children as well as their friends and neighbors. There must have been about four hundred in the audience right after church August 9 and I, plus my guests were right there with you. My daughter Jean, her daughters, 3 and 6 not only enjoyed the show but ran into some friends who were actors in this well performed show. We had lunch and saw the show which was well done and there were many congratulations afterward. It was led by Katherine Stanfill and her many helpers. In fact, I saw not only parents smiling and watching happily, but there were a lot of seniors such as I who enjoyed this production and marveled at how they could do so well in just two weeks of preparation. Yes, there are plans in the works to see if they can do another different presentation next year. Well, the children will only be another year older, so they will be ready when the time comes.

"A Little Bit of History" by Bob Peterson
I know it's been a couple of weeks since we saw the 101 Dalmatians show put on after drama camp by our children as well as their friends and neighbors. Last Sunday, August 16, Stephen Hale, our church youth ministry director filled the pulpit while  Pastor Molly Vetter was away and once again we learned how capable our various staff members are, often stepping in to take over when necessary. THANK you Stephen and we look forward to hearing you again sometime in the future.
September is just around the corner and with our children back in school there will be even more ACTIVITIES for us to attend to at church and during the week. The details are in the church's Sunday Order of Worship as well as on the internet so there is no way you can miss the details if you are reading this Lay Looker.

New Worship Musicians Hired
Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to share the news that we have hired band musicians to be with us on a regular basis. We are really excited about the quality of musicians, and hope you will take a chance to get to know them more: Mary Ann Stickler, organist/pianist; Gaku Murata, guitar; Cris Monarch, piano; Bryan Fougner, bass; Ed Zajac, drums/percussion.
By rearranging job descriptions, we are able to hire four band musicians without any significant change to our music budget. We are really excited about the quality of musicians, and hope you will take a chance to get to know them more.
Last week, we introduced you to the band. This week, we'd like to say a bit more about Mary Ann Stickler, our Pianist/Organist:

With a Master's of Music degree from the American Conservatory of Music, Mary Ann Stickler has an extensive background in music and theatre. She was on staff at both the American Conservatory of Music, where she taught theory, sight singing and piano, and more recently at the VanderCook College of Music, where she taught theory, piano, choral arranging, theatre workshop and developed an online class for teaching theory at the secondary level.
As a pianist and accompanist, she has performed all over the country, including at Carnegie Hall in New York. She has composed or arranged over a dozen musicals and has brought her talents to numerous churches.
We have put more information about all of our musicians on our website. We've loved not only the skill they bring to their music, but also their devotion in worship, their willingness to work with young musicians from our church, and more.

Do You Know ProTools or Logic?

Book Club: September 3, 7pm
Book Club met on July 16 to discuss "The Well Women." With several new members, the club has selected as its next read, "Cry, the Beloved Country." Written by Alan Paton and published in 1948, this impassioned novel is the deeply moving story of a native pastor and his son, set against apartheid South Africa, a land and a people riven by racial injustice. Remarkable for its lyricism, unforgettable for character and incident, the book is a classic work of love and hope, courage and endurance, born of the dignity of man. The novel is available on Amazon. Next meeting is set for Thursday, September 3, at 7 pm, at church. All are welcome. For information, contact Ann Gallaghermdgapg@verizon.net
or Laura Thatcher larzlaw@gmail.com

A Caring Community
Did you know that we have a ministry that organizes meals and other assistance for church folks in times of need? In the past, we've helped arrange rides to medical appointments, meals for people recovering from surgery, and more. Leila Grantz coordinates this ministry, using online sign-up tools. If you want to be a part of the group that she emails when there is an opportunity to help, or if you know someone who's in need of a little help, please contact the church office or Leila.
