"Baptized Into Service" by Pastor H. Lamar Smith
***
Baptism is the universal act of induction into the Christian family. It demonstrates birth into the family of God. It is incorporation into the Body of Christ, the church. It is a declaration of Jesus’ resurrection and of our own. But let us not forget that it is also an initiation into a life of following Christ and pouring out our lives in Christian service. This death to sin and self is so that we can walk in a new life of service to others. Live out your baptism!
“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life….You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.” (Romans 6:4, 18 (NIV))

"Acting Out Of Character" by Pastor H. Lamar Smith
***
Someone has said, “We never act out of character.” That is a hard pill to swallow, but it appears to be true at a deeper level than we want to admit. So-called out-of-character actions are really manifestations of something in us that we did not know was in there. We may even be surprised at ourselves. We must face and take responsibility for these actions. When something surfaces from deep within, it is an opportunity to cry out for a deeper cleansing of our inner self. In this way, our character is being constantly refined.
Search me, O God, and know my heart today.
Try me, O Savior; know my thoughts, I pray.
See if there be some wicked way in me;
Cleanse me from ev’ry sin, and set me free.
Lord, take my life and make it wholly Thine;
Fill my poor heart with Thy great love divine.
Take all my will, my passion, self, and pride.
I now surrender; Lord, in me abide. (J. Edwin Orr)
