Walmart Announces Return-To-Work Program For Family Caregivers

"Walmart Labs will offer a 16-week paid internship to up to 30 [caregivers] beginning this September...participants will be paired with seasoned managers and mentors to help them navigate their return to the workforce, Grafeld says. The program places an emphasis on learning and development, and the gaining and retraining of skills, such as software engineering and product development."

VA Says It's Trying To Improve Caregiver Program's Appeals Process

"The VA's caregiver program provides a stipend to family members of disabled vets to provide home health care. NPR revealed numerous VA centers were ejecting hundreds of people from the program. The VA did a review to fix this, but as NPR's Quil Lawrence reports, many caregivers who were dropped still have not been re-enrolled."

VA Mission Act Passes the Senate
The National Alliance for Caregiving applauds Congress for new support for family caregivers through the bipartisan VA Mission Act of 2018 (H.R. 5674), passed by the Senate last week. The bill was recently approved by the House and is expected to be signed into law by the President within the next few weeks. In addition to instituting a number of other reforms that will strengthen the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system, the VA Mission Act will expand the VA Comprehensive Family Caregiver Program to Veterans injured in service prior to September 11, 2001. New Jersey Enacts Statewide Paid Sick Leave Law
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D) has signed into law the New Jersey Paid Sick Leave Act, which will provide eligible employees with paid leave for their own medical needs, those of a family member, or other covered reasons. The Act will take effect on October 29, 2018. Learn more HERE.

Telehealth Caregiver Support Study
Caregivers living with a loved one with memory loss are invited to participate in a telehealth caregiver support study. The study is evaluating the NYU Caregiver Intervention (NYUCI) when delivered via teleconferencing. NYUCI provides counseling and support to caregivers and their families and has proven benefits when offered in person. Eligible caregivers must have access to and comfort using video enabled computer, tablet or phone to participate. Family Caregiver Perceptions of Prescription Opioid Medication
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for prompt detection and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders in elderly adults. Despite this call to action, currently there are no screening tools designed to specifically identify elderly adults at risk of developing Opioid Use Disorder. Researchers at William James College are collecting data from the perspective of family caregivers to identify changes in the behavior of elderly adults since being prescribed opioid medication.
