Jesus and His disciples met for the Passover in borrowed quarters and for whatever reason, the foot-washer did not show up. So Jesus got up and carried out the assignment. And then he used this practical task for a spiritual lesson. In John 13:15-17 Jesus says:
"I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them."
Serving is an issue of the heart. Service is not about assignment; it is about attitude. True service is the outward demonstration of inward humility.
