The Redondo Beach, California, United States First United Methodist Church eNews for Thursday, 24 May 2018: "Memorial Day, Pass the Mic: Testimony in Worship" Memorial Day Weekend: Sunday worship at 8:30am and 10:30am.
From Pastor Molly: in memoriam
Memorial Day gives us an occasion to remember all those who have died while serving in our nation's armed forces. It is a reminder of the tremendous sacrifices some have made for our nation, and of the great cost of war. I picture the seemingly endless rows of upright marble headstones in our national cemeteries, and imagine the distinct, precious lives each represents.
Perhaps you have someone you've known well who is among those we remember. I pray for your comfort. I give thanks for those whose lives were lost.
I pray, as well, for all those who have died in the wars we have been a part of: our enemies, civilians, our allies. I hope that this Memorial Day will be an occasion to remember and honor, and that we might also find renewed commitment to work for a world where there is no more war. May we find ways to honor God's presence in all peoples, and to live peaceably together.
I pray also for all those who've made sacrifices in so many other ways. Not only in our military, but for all those who have found ways to dedicate themselves to something bigger than themselves, for the sake of others. Jesus gives us a model of what self-giving, sacrificial love; may we choose ways to live that honor the preciousness of all people and of all God's creation.
grace and peace,

First we welcomed Eileen Raycroft, wife of Music Director Jim Raycroft, as a new member of our church and now she is substitute organist for a few Sundays. Talk about jumping right in...she also attends the Sunday Morning Bible Study Class, led by Helen Stockwell, in the May Day parlor each week and has played organ for our regular organist Mary Ann Stickler when not available. Welcome, Eileen as well as the other new members introduced.
During the Sunday "Prayers of the People", we heard about and prayed for Norma Day who recently had a knee replacement surgery. We understand she is doing great and we hope she will soon be back in church in her regular place each Sunday. Others were in the prayers but I don't quite get all of them due to my hearing aids not being near as good a my natural ears. The technology is outstanding but still not nearly as good as nature.
Since he played saxophone with Pastor Molly (cello) and me (French Horn) in the church talent show, I have become much better acquainted with David Ball and his constant companion, the extremely well trained dog, Carlos. This past Sunday David was Liturgist and it was not apparent that Carlos, as usual, was constantly at David's side. Get used to them, David is now a new member of our church and, partly due to Carlos, gets acquainted fast, particularly with the children.
Many of you know that I always sit in the front, left, of the sanctuary and it all began many years ago when my late wife's grandmother Belle Smith preferred to sit there and we always sat with her for company and to help as needed. Thus it was a surprise to me last week when the shot went off and streamers fell all around those of us sitting there. I'm certain you in the back got the full effect of this epiphany designed to alert us all to the emphasis of the sermon subject, "One". Following the service a joyful Jonah, Pastor Molly's son, was seen gathering up all the colorful streamers. He loved the game and did a useful bit of work for the church.

The band Hillsong United was formed in 1998 from close friends within the Hillsong youth ministry (called "Powerhouse Youth"). So many songs were being written within the youth ministry that it was suggested they make an album. The songs One and Everyday were recorded and released with the annual Hillsong worship album in 1999. They both achieved gold sales status in Australia, and the band has gone on to win five Dove Awards in 2014 and were nominated for an American Music Award and won the Billboard Music Award Top Christian Artist in 2015. The song Abba, Father was written in 1999 by Hillsong member Darlene Zschech and was released on the album Overwhelmed in 2010.
Awesome God is a song written and recorded by Rich Mullins and first recorded in 1988 on his album Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth. It was the first single released from the album and rose quickly to #1 on all the charts, spending several months on Christian radio. It was so popular that it became his signature song and became a popular congregational song. Since his passing in 1997, it has been covered by numerous artists, including Michael W. Smith and the heavy metal band Unashamed.
Sidewalk Prophets is a Christian rock band from Nashville. The band was formed by lead singer Dave Frey and rhythm guitarist Ben McDonald when the two were attending Indiana's Andersen University. They released a self-titled independent album in 2003, and released their first studio album with Word Records titled These Simple Truths, which nominated for a Dove Award for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year. That same year they won New Artist of the Year, and the single The Words I Would Say, released on These Simple Truths, peaked at #3. The song Impossible was released in 2015 as part of the album Something Different.
