Nazarene World
Week of Prayer
March 2-8, 2014
The Nazarene World Week of Prayer is an annual event occurring during the week that includes the World Day of Prayer (the first Friday in March). During this week Nazarenes dedicate themselves to interceding for our church and our world. Special requests are provided for a regional prayer plan.
Coordinating with the interdenominational World Day of Prayer (Friday, March 7), the Nazarene World Week of Prayer was begun with hopes that this event would re-ignite prayer flames, deepen commitment to prayer and fasting, and precipitate revival in our churches and lives.
"Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know."--Jeremiah 33:3 (NKJV)
On March 9, 2014, Join us for FREEDOM SUNDAY
To focus on the church's role in addressing modern slavery, also known as human trafficking.
On the first Sunday of Lent, we will focus on the fast God spoke of in Isaiah 58:6
"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?"
This is a movement of hope. Formed by prayer, informed by God's Word, and motivated by Christlike compassion, we will acknowledge the cries of the oppressed, challenge oppressive systems, and find ways to serve in humility.

Medical Failure Turns Into Spiritual Success!
Nazarene Hospital, Kudjip, Papua New Guinea
Gertrude’s mother was very ill when she came to the Nazarene Hospital. She was septic with fever, severe abdominal pain, and unable to eat or drink. When we asked how old they thought Mama was, we were told by the family that she was in her mid 80s. When we asked about her spiritual health, they assured us that she knew Jesus as her Lord and attended the Nazarene Church. Her daughter, Gertrude, is one of our strong women lay leaders, very active in women’s ministry.Nazarene Hospital Compressed
We stabilized Mama medically with a nasogastric tube, intravenous fluids, multiple IV antibiotics and we prayed with her and her family. She also needed emergency surgery.  We knew that it would be risky at her age as we have no ICU to help with post op care for critically ill patients.
During surgery, upon exploration of her abdomen, we found she had a gangrenous gall bladder and stones, which had ruptured into her abdomen due to the infection. We were able to get the gallbladder out and the infection cleaned out, but it was a major surgery for her. Post operatively she did well for the first 48 hours and I was happy, thinking that we had not only had an octogenarian survive surgery, but also a neonatal patient for surgery all in the same day.
That night I was called to the surgical ward emergently as Mama had suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite trying CPR we were unable to prevent her death. I was discouraged that night as the heavy mourning began, which is so much a part of the culture here. She probably had a blood clot in her lungs or a heart attack which caused the arrest.
Over the next few days and weeks I tried to remember Mama’s family, our friends, in prayer. I wondered how God would help them through the loss of this matriarch. I prayed that the Lord would comfort them and bless them. When I next saw Gertrude and her husband, Juneus, I asked gently how they were getting along. It was surprising what they told me about the days following her passing.
In PNG, there is the cultural practice to grieve at the graveside for several weeks.  Mourners gather in a temporary shelter called a “house cry.” As the family and community met to pay their respects to Mama, they decided to not just grieve as the heathen do, but to worship and praise God. Revival broke out in the village! Men who had been desperate criminals and deep sinners came to commit their lives. At that time 40 had been converted right there by the grave of this Christian lady!
The next week I was operating in our minor operating room on a young man. His friend was with him to help him home after the case. As I told this story to my operating room staff, the friend spoke up and said, “That was my grandmother!” I then asked him if he was a believer. He said he had not been before, but he was one of those who had committed his life to Jesus and now the number of new Christians had grown to 44!
As I thought later, this lady had only a few years left to live even if we had been able to pull her through to recovery. She is in heaven now with her Lord. All the patients I operate on will eventually die. My goal is to point them to the Savior and give them the hope of heaven and the comfort of His love. We praise God Who can work to bring victory even out of death and dying!  Please pray that these new believers can grow in their faith. Pray too that we do not miss the opportunities to share Jesus with those who are hungry and ready to receive Him.

Radio Ministry Prayer Answered in the Highlands!
Dusin Mission Station, Highlands, Papua New Guinea
On a recent trip to the Melanesia-South Pacific Field,  I had the opportunity to travel and work closely with Daniel Eka, the National Communications Coordinator for Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Flying into Dusin Mission Station
We were blessed with the opportunity to visit several areas of ministry, including the Dusin Mission Station, located deep in the Highlands of PNG, an area reachable only by a multiple day hike or mission aircraft.  Fortunately, we were allowed to use the aircraft and were spared the beautiful but grueling hike through the rain forest.
Upon arrival, one of the first questions I asked was whether or not our Nazarene World Mission Broadcast radio programs that are currently broadcast throughout PNG were able to reach the deep mountain canyons where many of our churches are located.   This area is so remote that electricity, telephone, TV, Internet, and roads, are known by most people here, only through the stories told by those who have ventured outside of these mountain highlands.
The first morning following our afternoon arrival to Dusin, Daniel and I sat on the porch of the mission station and began to strategize as to how we would survey whether or not radio ministries could have an impact here.  My personal conviction since becoming Regional Communications Coordinator has been to prayerfully seek out where God is working and then join Him!  So many times we dream, strategize, plan,  act, and then ask for blessings of our plans, instead of first seeking His direction and guidance.
I told Daniel, “I have seen many people transiting the station and have yet to see or hear a radio.  If this is where God would have us working with radio, we need to find out if radios are even part of life here.”
Literally, I had no more than finished that statement when we looked up from the porch, and walking down the trail were three men, and what were they carrying…but a radio!  We were absolutely astounded.  God had orchestrated the answer to our prayers at exactly the moment that we said, God…if radio is here we need to know about it!
We found that indeed, some radio stations could be faintly heard and that at certain points, our Nazarene World Mission Broadcast programs were penetrating deep into these remote Highlands.  But we found something even more exciting.  As we spoke with this young man, he turned his radio and showed us a SD memory card slot.  He asked us if we would be able to take his SD card and put programming on it so that he could take quality programs to the remote areas where the radio signal would not reach.
God had answered our prayer and showed us how audio programming could make a significant difference in reaching, teaching, and encouraging our Nazarene Church members along with those who had yet to hear the message of the Gospel.

There are hurdles yet to be overcome in the area of obtaining solar powered radios (batteries are difficult or almost impossible to obtain) and in thinking through the process of producing SD memory card programs and getting them distributed in these remote areas, but with God, nothing is impossible.
Nazarene World Mission Broadcast is truly a worthy investment.  In Papua New Guinea alone, we are producing three radio programs, which are broadcast weekly on 13 separate radio stations.  The programs target adult, youth, and children with age/gender appropriate content, and are produced in the local language at our radio studio located on the campus of Melanesia Nazarene Bible College.
