Reflecting God – Embrace Holy Living “Meet Prudence” Monday, 25 February 2014 – Scripture – Proverbs 8: 12 “I, wisdom, have made prudence my dwelling.
    Find out knowledge and discretion.
13 The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil.
I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth.
14 Counsel and sound knowledge are mine.
    I have understanding and power.
15 By me kings reign,
    and princes decree justice.
16 By me princes rule;
nobles, and all the righteous rulers of the earth.
17 I love those who love me.
Those who seek me diligently will find me.
18 With me are riches, honor,
    enduring wealth, and prosperity.
19 My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold;
    my yield than choice silver.
20 I walk in the way of righteousness,
    in the middle of the paths of justice;
21 That I may give wealth to those who love me.
    I fill their treasuries.
“Meet Prudence” by Duane C. Brush
Prudence, now there is an old-fashioned sounding word. Prudence is all starched collar, buttoned up, and goody two-shoes. No one names their little girls Prudence any more. Prudence has had a rough go. Maybe it is because a seemingly related word “prude,” which actually comes from the same root as “proud,” has fallen so far out of favor. When was the last time you heard “prude” used in a positive way? Never, that’s when!
Yet, wisdom and prudence are roomies; they “dwell together.” One never goes anywhere without the other. Maybe that is because prudence really has more to do with being prudent (to be governed or directed by wisdom; the opposite of foolish, careless, or indiscreet). It is wise to be prudent: prudence acts with purpose and consideration. You can take prudence anywhere, she will never purposely offend. She always acts according to the highest principles of godly wisdom. She gives good advice. She has insight and power.
In the end, when “fools have rushed in where angels fear to tread,” prudence will still be walking in “the ways of righteousness, along the paths of justice” (Proverbs 8:20). Seek her. She is the kind of girl you can take home to momma.
Hymn for Today:
“I Have Settled The Question” by Haldor Lillenas, copyright 1919. Renewed 1947 by Nazarene Publishing House.
1. I remember when the Lord spoke to my soul
I could feel the heavy burden from me roll
When He spoke the gracious words, “Wilt thou be whole?”
Then I settled the question forever.
Refrain:
I have settled the question, hallelujah!
I will never turn back from the narrow way.
I am going through with Jesus, hallelujah!
Till I reach the gates of glory some sweet day.
2. I no longer walk the ways of sinfulness,
But I daily tread the paths of righteousness
Since the day the Lord has come my life to bless.
I have settled the question forever.
Refrain:
I have settled the question, hallelujah!
I will never turn back from the narrow way.
I am going through with Jesus, hallelujah!
Till I reach the gates of glory some sweet day.
3. I will choose the holy joys that always last,
And reject sin’s pleasures that will soon be past.
To the treasures of true worth I’m holding fast.
I have settled the question forever.
Refrain:
I have settled the question, hallelujah!
I will never turn back from the narrow way.
I am going through with Jesus, hallelujah!
Till I reach the gates of glory some sweet day.
4. Others may deny the Lord and live in sin,
But the race that I have entered I must win.
Through the pearly gates I mean to enter in.
I have settled the question forever.
Refrain:
I have settled the question, hallelujah!
I will never turn back from the narrow way.
I am going through with Jesus, hallelujah!
Till I reach the gates of glory some sweet day.
Thought for Today:
“Prudence means practical common sense, taking the trouble to think out what you are doing and what is likely to come of it.” C. S. Lewis).
Prayer Needs:
Many people in American Samoa will come to know Jesus the Christ (Yeshua the Messiah) and receiver the fullness of the Holy Spirit.
