DAY 10 OF 40 - Better Together Through Prayer And The Word

DAY 10 OF 40 - Better Together Through Prayer And The Word
Nehemiah 4:6-9
6 So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work. 7 But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry. 8 And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it. 9 And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.
DAY 10 – BUILDING ON A FIRM FOUNDATION
SCRIPTURE: Nehemiah 4:6 So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to half its height: for the people had a mind to work. 7 But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be filled, then they were very angry; 8 and they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein. 9 But we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
The Jews were on a mission. With Nehemiah as their “God-inspired” leader, they pressed on building the wall. They worked with all their hearts! Since the wall was being built in different sections all at the same time, it was not only rising in size but also spreading out to close the gaps between the different wall sections. The sections were coming together to make one wall around the city! A wall with a firm foundation.
Success was immanent! This made Sanballat, Toriah, and the others angry. They conspired together to fight against Jerusalem and cause confusion among the Jews. The Jews realized that this wall with the firm foundation was not enough to be victorious if and/or when the trouble came. They needed an even stronger foundation…But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.
This guard was a group of watchmen or armed men that were established to guard the city. It brought a sense of security for them, but they knew that a group of armed men was not enough. It was not a strong enough foundation.
A stronger foundation was needed … Nehemiah found it through “prayer” to God!
LIFE APPLICATION: Often our lives look so good from the outside…wonderful family, nice home, attending church, good job…but the foundation that all of that is built on is not firm. It’s all man-made. It’s not built on “prayer”; and when trouble comes – and it will – it shakes and sometimes even crumbles! What is the source of your foundation? How firm is the source of your foundation? Is your source “prayer?”
