San Diego & Sacramento, California, United States - Speaker-Elect Toni Adkins - District 78 "Remembering the Legacy of César Chávez" for Friday, 28 March 2014
Friends,
This coming Monday, March 31st, we celebrate the life and legacy of labor leader and founder of the United Farm Workers, César Chávez. Fourteen years ago, the California Legislature created a state holiday in honor of Chávez's birthday.
As the nation's grocery basket, California feeds millions of families across America. Farmworkers, who historically were paid little for backbreaking work with few workplace protections, are essential to this key element of our state economy.
César Chávez, who himself became a farmworker after serving in the Navy during World War II, was committed to improving the lives of his fellow workers. Through non-violent tactics such as strikes, boycotts, and fasts, he significantly strengthened farmworkers’ access to rights exercised by other workers in the United States.
César Chávez's legacy contains important lessons for future generations about human rights and non-violent social change. For this reason, in 2012 I was proud to support ACR 73, which called upon Californians to spend the Chávez holiday performing community service. Last year, I also supported AB 34, which established Nuestra Señora Reina de La Paz in Kern County, as a state historical landmark. Known as La Paz, this site includes Chávez's home and the United Farmworkers headquarters.
Next Monday, please join me in remembering the inspiring life of César Chávez through reflection, discussion, and service.
Warmly,
TONI ATKINS
