Kansas City, Missouri, United States - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown witn an enote from Pastor Scott Chrostek & Pastor Todd Maberry for Friday, 31 October 2014
Greetings RezDowntowners!
Pastor Todd writing to you today because Pastor Scott and many others from our Downtown community are traveling back from Israel.  Most likely they will be traveling at the exact moment you read this, so please say a quick prayer for that group.  We look forward to having them back in worship this weekend.  You can see some highlights from their trip on our Resurrection Downtown Facebook page.
What a thrilling week to be in Kansas City!  While the Royals fell just short of taking the crown, they certainly made us proud.  It was energizing to be downtown as the city came alive in the glare of the national spotlight.  Our RezDowntown community also had a vibrant week.  On Thursday night, many members of our community showed up at Community LINC and used their vehicles to bring Halloween fun to our new friends there.  Thanks to everyone who came out, dressed-up, and had fun with the kids!  We have one more opportunity to build community on Saturday with our Annual Fall Fun Fest at Johnson Farms.  You can learn more about that, as well as other opportunities in our community here:
Fall Fun Fest - Think you make the best chili ever?  Have a favorite cornbread receipt that beats all others?  Here's your chance to prove it at the RezDowntown Fall Fun Fest on Saturday, November 1, 11am-1pm.  Bring your children young and old, friends and strangers to Johnson Farms at 17701 State Line rd. D for an awesome day of fun including a pumpkin launcher, corn maze, sand bus, and The Blob (you will have to come to find out what that is!).  Contact Kris Drummond (kris.drummond@cor.org) to enter the contests or for more information about the event.  The Bulletin Stuffing Team won last year, it's your turn to win the Golden Chili Pot!
Acting Up in Church Improv Class  -  This class begins Wednesday, November 5, 7pm at 1508 Grand in the sanctuary.  This 4-week class is for everyone - especially if you are terrified to get on stage or simply act out!  Fun and easy games help you to explore the art of improvisational acting.  Participants will also get the chance to 'improv'e their listening, confidence, trust, team-building and collaboration skills.  Most of all, you will have a great time and laugh a lot!  Register at rezdowntown.org/actingup or contact Kaevan Tavakolinia at kaevant@gmail.com.
Women's Breakfast Series - Want to Hear a Great Speaker?  Want to meet women in your community?  Come to the Women's Breakfast!  On Saturday, November 8, 9am at 1522 McGee, hear from Laura Maberry, a Licensed Professional Counselor in a group private practice in Kansas City, and 'wife-extraordinaire' to pastor Todd.  She recently completed training in Brene Brown'sThe Daring Way, a research-based therapeutic approach to addressing shame and vulnerability.  We would love for you to bring a friend and a breakfast item to share, or feel free to come empty-handed but open-minded as we hear about Laura's passion for therapy, her struggle with infertility and how suffering gave birth to beauty, and how she weaves her faith into all of this.  For more information, contact Jan Burchett at jburchett@kc.rr.com.
The Power of Gratitude -  Each year we have the opportunity to make a financial commitment to support Resurrection's vision of changing lives, transforming communities and renewing the church.  This annual commitment allows each of us to evaluate our giving, what it means and how much it can be for the coming year.  It also helps our church to determine a more accurate budget for Resurrection's ministries.  Giving and commitment information will be mailed this week.  Thank you for taking the time to pray about your giving.  We invite you to return your commitment cards during worship, by mail or on-line at cor.org/commitment
Meal Ministry - Do you enjoy cooking and are willing to share a meal with someone in need?  Resurrection Downtown is starting a new ministry to provide meals for those in our community who have a need.  It could be after a death, surgery, or birth of a child, etc.  We are currently wanting to generate a list of people who could be contacted when these needs come up.  Contact Lindsay McCoy at lkmccoy320@gmail.com for more information and to be added to the list.
As a reminder, Daylight Savings is this weekend, so be sure to set your clocks back 1 hour on Saturday night, November 1st.  This weekend in worship we are starting a new sermon series on 'How Will You Measure Your Life?'  It certainly seems timely for me as today I am officiating a funeral for a 29 year old who died tragically and unexpectedly this week due to cardiac arrest.  I have definitely been reminded of the fragility of life and the need to live each day in a way that makes a loving difference in the world.  By coming to worship this weekend, you will be encouraged and inspired to live your life in a way that matters and has eternal significance.  You will not want to miss out!  I hope to see you there!
All the best,
Todd
