Sunday's Scripture:
Matthew 25:31-46
Matthew 25: The Sheep and the Goats
31-33 “When he finally arrives, blazing in beauty and all his angels with him, the Son of Man will take his place on his glorious throne. Then all the nations will be arranged before him and he will sort the people out, much as a shepherd sorts out sheep and goats, putting sheep to his right and goats to his left.
34-36 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what’s coming to you in this kingdom. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation. And here’s why:
I was hungry and you fed me,
I was thirsty and you gave me a drink,
I was homeless and you gave me a room,
I was shivering and you gave me clothes,
I was sick and you stopped to visit,
I was in prison and you came to me.’
37-40 “Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’
41-43 “Then he will turn to the ‘goats,’ the ones on his left, and say, ‘Get out, worthless goats! You’re good for nothing but the fires of hell. And why? Because—
I was hungry and you gave me no meal,
I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
I was homeless and you gave me no bed,
I was shivering and you gave me no clothes,
Sick and in prison, and you never visited.’
44 “Then those ‘goats’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or homeless or shivering or sick or in prison and didn’t help?’
45 “He will answer them, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you failed to do one of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me—you failed to do it to me.’
46 “Then those ‘goats’ will be herded to their eternal doom, but the ‘sheep’ to their eternal reward.”
John Wesley's Notes/Commentary for Matthew 25:31-46:
Verse 31
[31] When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him — With what majesty and grandeur does our Lord here speak of himself Giving us one of the noblest instances of the true sublime. Indeed not many descriptions in the sacred writings themselves seem to equal this. Methinks we can hardly read it without imagining ourselves before the awful tribunal it describes.
Verse 34
[34] Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Inherit the kingdom — Purchased by my blood, for all who have believed in me with the faith which wrought by love.
Prepared for you — On purpose for you. May it not be probably inferred from hence, that man was not created merely to fill up the places of the fallen angels?
Verse 35
[35] For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
I was hungry, and ye gave me meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink — All these works of outward mercy suppose faith and love, and must needs he accompanied with works of spiritual mercy. But works of this kind the Judge could not mention in the same manner. He could not say, I was in error, and ye recalled me to the truth; I was in sin, and ye brought me to repentance.
In prison — Prisoners need to be visited above all others, as they are commonly solitary and forsaken by the rest of the world.
Verse 37
[37] Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
Then shall the righteous answer — It cannot be, that either the righteous or the wicked should answer in these very words. What we learn herefrom is, that neither of them have the same estimation of their own works as the Judge hath.
Verse 40
[40] And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Inasmuch as ye did it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye did it to me — What encouragement is here to assist the household of faith? But let us likewise remember to do good to all men.
Verse 41
[41] Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Depart into the everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels — Not originally for you: you are intruders into everlasting fire.
Verse 44
[44] Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Then will they answer — So the endeavour to justify themselves, will remain with the wicked even to that day!
Verse 46
[46] And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life everlasting — Either therefore the punishment is strictly eternal, or the reward is not: the very same expression being applied to the former as to the latter. The Judge will speak first to the righteous, in the audience of the wicked. The wicked shall then go away into everlasting fire, in the view of the righteous. Thus the damned shall see nothing of the everlasting life; but the just will see the punishment of the ungodly. It is not only particularly observable here, 1. That the punishment lasts as long as the reward; but, 2. That this punishment is so far from ceasing at the end of the world, that it does not begin till then.
Sermon Story "The Least or Being Inclusive" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 26 November 2014
This passage from Matthew 25 commonly called "The Sheep and The Goats" have an Old Testament passage that is included in this week's Lectionary Scripture from Ezekiel 34. Usually, there is no conncction between the two passages of Scripture, but this year they appeared to bring them together. In the Old Testament passage, we have a prophet sharing with the Israelites about the shepherds or religious leaders of his day eating the best and living high on the hog while the poor and the common people eat the scrimpy leftovers and drink the muddied up water. The passage which has been chosen from the New Testament is the story of God coming in the final days to judge the people who call themselves God's people whether Jews or Christians or whomever. Jesus talks about Himself sitting on God's throne to judge the people with their actions towards other people. There are a number of marginalized or excluded people from His church today whether they are people who are LGBYQ or people who are immigrants or people who are living in poverty or people who are homeless, but let us look at the people who are differently abled or disabled. There has been great things that the church has done in the past to keep people who are differently able off the streets and into an mental hopsital or institution with know inclusion into community life. There has been an attitude that because they are differently abled that God cannot use them to build his KIngdom on earth as it is in Heaven. We have at least two from Scriptures: Moses and Paul. Moses had a speech problem and attempted to use that as an accuse to get out of leading the Israelites out of slavery from the Egyptians, but God thought differently. Then, there was the Apostle Paul who wrote most of the New Testament or at least dictated to someone who did write it had a thorn in his side that he asked God to remove, but God said that he would use this weakness to show God's strength. How do we relate to people who are differently abled? How do you include them into your church community as God's witnesses of His love for all people? How will God look at you as a sheep or a goat in including fully people who are differently abled? I am reminded of Keith Green's rendition of "The Sheep and the Goats" this week:
And when the Son, Man comes
And all the holy angel's with Him
Then shall He sit on His glorious throne
And He will divide the nations before Him
As a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats
And she shall put the sheep on His right
And the goats on His left
And He shall say to the sheep
Come ye, blessed of my Father
Inherit the Kingdom I have prepared for You
From the foundation of the world
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat
I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink
I was naked and you clothed me
I was a stranger and you invited me in
I was sick and I was in prison and you came to me
Thank you, enter into your rest
And they shall answer Him, yes, they shall answer Him
And they'll say, Lord, when?
When were You hungry, Lord
And we gave You something to eat?
Lord, when were You thirsty? I can't remember
And we gave You drink?
Huh, when were You naked, Lord, and we clothed You?
And Lord, when were You a stranger and we invited You in?
I mean, we invited lots of people in, Lord
I could never forget that face
And Lord, when were You sick and we visited You?
Or in prison, and we came to You? Lord, tell us?
In as much as You did it to the least of my brethren
You've done it unto me
Oh yes, as much as you've done it to the very least
Of my brethren, you've done it
You've done it unto me, enter into your rest
Then He shall turn to those on His left, the goats
Depart from me, You cursed ones, into everlasting fire
Prepared for the devil and His angels
For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat
I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink
I was naked out in the cold, in exposure and you sent me away
I was a stranger and I knocked at your door
But you didn't open, you told me to go away
I was sick, racked in pain upon my bed
And I begged and prayed and pleaded
That You'd come but You didn't
I was in prison and I rotted there
I'd prayed that You'd come
I heard Your programs on the radio
I read Your magazines but You never came
Depart from me
Lord, there must be some mistake, when?
Lord, I mean, when were You hungry, Lord
And we didn't give You something to eat?
And Lord, when were You thirsty and we didn't give You drink?
I mean, that's not fair, well, would You like something now?
Would one of the angels like to go out
And get the Lord a hamburger and a coke?
Oh, You're not hungry, yeah, I lost my appetite too
Uh, Lord, uh, Lord, when were You naked
I mean, Lord, that's not fair either, Lord
We didn't know what size You wear
Oh Lord, when were You a stranger, Lord
You weren't one of those creepy people
Who used to come to the door, were You?
Oh Lord, that wasn't our ministry Lord
We just didn't feel led, You know?
Lord, when were You sick? What did you have, anyway?
Well, at least it wasn't fatal, oh, it was?
I'm sorry, Lord, I would have sent You a card
Lord, just on last thing we want to know
When were You in prison, Lord? What were You in for anyway?
I had a friend in Levenworth
Enough, in as much as you've not done it
Unto the least of my brethren
You've not done it unto me
In as much as you've not done it
Unto the least of my brethren
You've not done it unto me, depart from me
And these shall go away into everlasting fire
But the righteous into eternal life
And my friends, the only difference between the sheep
And the goats, according to this scripture
Is what they did and didn't do

I have a vivid memory of a conversation I shared many years ago with a widow, as she grieved a death that had come far too soon. "I feel really strange saying this," she said quietly and tenuously, "because there's no way I would ever want that husband to have died. But I feel oddly grateful for the things his death has showed me. I had no idea that people cared about me." It wasn't a path she ever would have chosen, and yet, somehow, along the journey, she discovered blessings for which she had deep gratitude.
I was moved by her gratitude, and by the way it had been so important for her name. In the face of death, she had become aware of how precious and beautiful the community around her was.
I invite you to that sort of Thanksgiving this year--to take time to notice and celebrate whatever is beautiful and good in your life. Even when it's set in the midst of difficulty, struggle, conflict or uncertainty, we so much for which to be grateful. What a privilege it is to get to name those things, and to offer thanks.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
This Sunday, we invite you to two extra and meaningful ways to share in giving to the church--through our special Thanksgiving Offering, in support of our current ministries, and through giving a pledge card with a commitment to financial support of the church's ministries in 2015. We will have a special moment in worship for dedication of these offerings, in addition to our regular tithes and offerings. Thank you for being a part of the generous giving that funds our ministries and mission!

Fall Stewardship
Pledge Campaign
This Sunday, we invite you to bring your pledge of financial support for our church ministries in 2015 with you to worship; we also invite you to bring a contribution to our special Thanksiving Offering.
Your special offerings and your regular giving both allow the meaningful and rich ministries of this church to flourish. Our budget funds the salaries of our excellent staff, the allow the use of our beautiful facility, and they support ministries of the church far beyond our walls.
You can read more about our pledge campaign on our website. We have already begun to receive pledged commitments, and are very grateful.
Our church's ministries depend on the financial support of our congregation--and we believe that giving is an important part of our faith lives, as well. We are grateful for the generosity of so many!

From the Lay Leader, Johnna Kosnoff
bi-weekly thoughts and reflections from our church Lay
Leader
Thankful for My Table
"As our church has been gathering, sharing and giving thanks around tables recently, I've been recalling activities, joys and dreams that have occurred around my own kitchen table over the past many years. This week most of us will gather around someone's kitchen table and share in a Thanksgiving meal, as well as memories and, hopefully, gratitude. However, the holiday is a difficult time for some because of those missing from our tables. I am encouraged by those who fill their empty seats by opening their tables to strangers and to friends. And, I am thankful that Christ opens his table to all of us in all seasons. This poem [click the link below], while probably not written about Christ, helps me see Christ as my table in life; although, I'm sure he never wobbles under the weight. May you find joy around your table. Happy Thanksgiving..."Read the rest of Johnna's recent "From the Lay Leader" column on our website by clicking here.

Tables (from the Turkish of Edip Cansever, translated by Richard Tillinghast)
A man filled with the gladness of living
Put his keys on the table,
Put flowers in a copper bowl there.
He put his eggs and milk on the table.
He put there the light that came in through the window,
Sounds of a bicycle, sound of a spinning wheel.
The softness of bread and weather he put there.
On the table the man put
Things that happened in his mind.
What he wanted to do in life,
He put that there.
Those he loved, those he didn't love,
The man put them on the table too.
Three times three make nine:
The man put nine on the table.
He was next to the window next to the sky;
He reached out and placed on the table endlessness.
So many days he had wanted to drink a beer!
He put on the table the pouring of that beer.
He placed there his sleep and his wakefulness;
His hunger and his fullness he placed there.
Now that's what I call a table!
It didn't complain at all about the load.
It wobbled once or twice, then stood firm.
The man kept piling things on.
