Formerly he (Onesimus) was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me (Philemon 11).
In the Greek language, the name, "Onesimus" means "useful." And here, Paul makes a play on his name: formerly he was "useless" to you but now he has become "useful" (Onesimus) both to Philemon and to Paul.
Why? I imagine, because all three have become Christians and are under a new motivation, one that changes everything, just as it does for us. Indeed, "in Christ" we all become "useful" in that we align our lives with the One we love and serve, and that makes everything different.
So, go and "be useful" in the work of Christ. Love and prayers, Dan
