The Redondo Beach, California, United States First United Methodist Church eNews for Thursday, 3 May 2018: "Half-Truths Sermon Series" "A half-truth: God said it. I believe it. That settles it; Sunday worship at 8:30am and 10:30am."

The Redondo Beach, California, United States First United Methodist Church eNews for Thursday, 3 May 2018: "Half-Truths Sermon Series" "A half-truth: God said it. I believe it. That settles it; Sunday worship at 8:30am and 10:30am."
From Pastor Molly: it's settled
Several years ago, I attended a Bible study led by Rev. Grace Imathiu, on parables of Jesus. She asked us to notice that the titles we put on parables aren't actually in scripture. Often, our Bibles will add little italicized headings, but those weren't in the original text. "Jesus just told stories and let the chips fall," she said. But we in the church, she noticed, often aren't comfortable with a lot of "chips" flying around.
I usually like answers to questions, tensions that resolve, and stories that have neat meanings.
Over and over again, though, things get stirred up. By the complexity of the world, by our human issues, by God's Holy Spirit. The good news is that we serve a living God, who's not done with us yet. God is still speaking into our lives and our world, still revealing what grace looks like in us. Thanks be to God!
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
We are pleased to welcome Rev. Nicole Reilley as our preacher this Sunday. She serves as Director of New Ministries for our California-Pacific Annual Conference, and has been connected as a member of our congregation since she served as an interim pastor here in 2012. I look forward to being with her and you all in worship this weekend!
In Worship This Week
Sunday, May 6:
1 Corinthians 14:34-35
Rev. Nicole Reilley, preaching
1 Corinthians 14:34 let the wives remain silent when the congregation meets; they are certainly not permitted to speak out. Rather, let them remain subordinate, as also the Torah says; 35 and if there is something they want to know, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for a woman to speak out in a congregational meeting.(Complete Jewish Bible).
1 Corinthians 14:34-35
Verse 34
[34] Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
Let your women be silent in the churches — Unless they are under an extraordinary impulse of the Spirit. For, in other cases, it is not permitted them to speak - By way of teaching in public assemblies.
But to be in subjection — To the man whose proper office it is to lead and to instruct the congregation. Genesis 3:16.
Verse 35
[35] And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
And even if they desire to learn anything - Still they are not to speak in public, but to ask their own husbands at home - That is the place, and those the persons to inquire of.
(John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes)

"Giving My Best" by Mark Condon
V1
There's been many times that I've let you down
Searching for happiness, but none to be found.
To think that the price you paid for me
wasn't in vain - all that agony
But I'm here to say I've had my ups and my downs
but I'm here now to stay, 'cause of the love that I've found
CHORUS
Now I'm giving my best, to You Lord,
all that I have, I won't withhold.
I'm giving my best, to You lord,
all of my heart, and all of my soul
"Good News" by William Dawson
AIN’T THAT GOOD NEWS in “American Negro Songs” by J. W. Work, 1940
I ‘ve a crown in the Kingdom
Ain’t that good news
I’ve a crown up in the Kingdom
Ain’t that good news
I’m going to lay down this world
Going to shoulder up my cross
Goin’ to take it home to Jesus
Ain’t that good news
I ‘ve a harp in the Kingdom
Ain’t that good news…
I ‘ve  a robe in the Kingdom
Ain’t that good news…
I ‘ve slippers in the Kingdom
Ain’t that good news…
I ‘ve a Saviour in the Kingdom
Ain’t that good news…

I hear there is to be an all church potluck lunch today [Sunday] after our 10:30 AM worship service. You may know that I am a regular attendee at these sometimes monthly gatherings and that I have examined how to best choose from the delightful offerings brought by women and men alike. If I get in the front of the line, there is no way to choose from the best. Everything is full up. If I get at the last, empty bowls and casseroles seem to prove that their contents were best appreciated by our people. So, the best place to be is in the middle of the line and choose from half empty containers, providing one still relishes that particular choice of dishes. Now, you know we cannot all be in the middle of the line, so good judgment and timing are important for best placement at each pot-luck event. I often am last in line, due to my job of money counting after worship, so my team of Pat Godfrey and June Shors will sometimes choose to wait on the counting and eat first. It just means a slower time getting out of the church and going to our various homes. However, most all the time there is a good selection of wonderful food, even for those last in line. Perhaps the choices are fewer, but you always seem to have brought plenty for those who forgot. Thank you for those who bring lots of extra food. Everyone who brings food brings their best. Now, I think that's enough about pot-lucks.

Church Potluck: May 6
Join us for a church potluck on Sunday, May 6, following the 10:30am worship service. All are welcome. Please bring a dish to share. (You can bring washable dishes from home to use, or use the disposable ones we will have available!)
This series is based on Adam Hamilton's book, "Half Truths"
Half-Truths: Sermon Series after Easter
They are simple phrases. They sound Christian—like something you might find in the Bible. We’ve all heard these words. Maybe we’ve said them. They capture some element of truth, yet they miss the point in important ways.
Join us for a sermon series that tackles some common Christian clichés that don't get it all right:
God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
This five-week sermon series concludes on May 6!

Rehearsals will be right after 10:30 worship on:
May 6th
The performance will be on May 13th, during 10:30 worship.
Honoring and Remembering our Mothers: May 13
To celebrate mothers (and all those who mother others), we have special moments planned in worship on May 13.
In the spirit of the tradition of wearing flowers in honor of our mothers, we have simple felt flowers for you to wear at church. Additionally, we'll make a donation in honor of our mothers, to the Fresh Start women's shelter in Baja, Mexico, where our youth and others have volunteered over the past several summers. You can see more about their work on their Facebook page. We invite you to make additional donations, too--just mark your gift for "Mother's Day 2018."
During 10:30 worship, our church children will sing a song that they've helped write, in celebration of mothers. Our gratitude to our Organist/Pianist, Mary Ann Stickler, who's composing and rehearsing the song with them!

This week, we get to hear our own husband and wife team, Lauren and Stuart Everson, sing a Brooklyn Tabernacle classic. They’ve been moving for the past couple of weeks, but have still found time to share with us.
Watch for our next great Composer Sunday, June 10, where we will welcome composer Sean McDermott. Sean writes mostly for the Catholic world, but his music is some of the most melodically beautiful stuff I’ve ever heard. He was on tour with a local choir to the Vatican years ago, and one of the pieces they sang was his Ave Maria (which we’ll be singing). The music director at the Vatican was so overwhelmed by the piece that he asked for a copy, and it’s now in the Vatican music library, where it is sung periodically. The piece was subsequently dedicated to the Vatican and its music director. The offertory will be a world premiere of a piece he wrote for his Dad, and hasn’t been sung yet...

William Dawson is an icon in the world of spirituals, but he was, in fact, a classically trained musician. Born in Anniston, Alabama in 1899, he studied at the Homer Institute of Fine arts, where he got his Bachelor's degree in music. He later studied at the Chicago Musical College and then at the American Conservatory of Music, where he got his Master's degree. His body of music includes chamber, orchestral and choral music, but his spirituals are what he's best known for. It was during his 25 year tenure at the Tuskegee Institute (1931-1956) that he developed the Tuskegee Institute Choir into a world-renowned ensemble, and he published many of his best-known spiritual arrangements. Ain't-A-That Good News is a classic he wrote in 1967. He passed away in May of 1990.
The Brooklyn Tabernacle is a non-denominational, multi-cultural church in the heart of downtown Brooklyn that began as a small congregation worshiping in a rundown building, and has grown into a congregation of over 16,000. The husband and wife team of Pastor Jim Cymbala and music director Carol Cymbala took over leadership of the 30 member congregation in 1971. By the 1980's, the church had grown enough to purchase the 1383-seat Carlton Theatre and convert it into their sanctuary. By 2002, they had outgrown that facility and purchased Loew's Metropolitan Theatre, a former vaudeville theatre, and renovated it into a state-of-the-art, 3,200-seat worship facility. The choir began with just 9 members in 1971 and grew with the church. Carol Cymbala began writing music for the choir, and they recorded their first album in the 1980's. Now numbering over 280 members, their music is sung all over the world, and they sang at the 2013 inauguration of President Obama. Giving My Best, written by Mark Condon, was released on their live album Live...We Come Rejoicing in 2000.
Be Thou My Vision is an old favorite hymn that has its roots in 6th century Ireland. The original Old Irish text - Rop tú mo Baile – is often attributed to Saint Dallan Forgaill in the 6th century. The prayer was an Irish monastic tradition for centuries before being set to music. There are two manuscripts of the text in the National Library of Ireland, both dating back to the 10th century. It was first translated from the Old Irish into English by Mary Elizabeth Byrne in 1905, and then re-written into singable verse by Eleanor Hull in 1912, which is the text most commonly used. In 1919, it was set to the Irish folk tune Slane, named after the town of Slane in County Meath, where, on Slane Hill in 433, Saint Patrick defied a royal edict by the High King of Ireland and got himself into trouble (it wasn't about snakes, it was about a bonfire). The tune first shows up published as With My Love on the Road in Patrick Joyce's Old Irish Folk Music and Songs in 1909. The 1919 edition of the Irish Church Hymnal is where we first find the song we sing today.
