Sunday's Sermon, March 13, 2016
Dr. Kevin Mannoia
John 11:38-44John 11:38 Yeshua, again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying in front of the entrance. 39 Yeshua said, “Take the stone away!” Marta, the sister of the dead man, said to Yeshua, “By now his body must smell, for it has been four days since he died!” 40 Yeshua said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you keep trusting, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they removed the stone. Yeshua looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I myself know that you always hear me, but I say this because of the crowd standing around, so that they may believe that you have sent me.” 43 Having said this, he shouted, “El‘azar! Come out!” 44 The man who had been dead came out, his hands and feet wrapped in strips of linen and his face covered with a cloth. Yeshua said to them, “Unwrap him, and let him go!”

An Evening with Tara Beth
This Thursday, March 17, at 7:00 pmYou are invited to this special evening with PazNaz's pastoral candidate, Tara Beth Leach, and her husband, Jeff, on Thursday, March 17, at 7:00 pm in Gilmore Hall. Light refreshments will be served.
"A Pastor’s Husband regarding His Pastor" by Jeff Leach, whose wife (Tara Beth) is a Nazarene pastor and a student at Northern Seminary.

When I was a student at a Small Christian college in the Midwest, I encountered young women who would express a desire to be a Pastor’s wife. I don’t think I ever encountered a single guy that said it was their hope as well. I can’t say that it was a dream of mine to be a Pastor’s husband, but I wouldn’t change a thing.
I think Tara Beth and I are a bit of an odd couple. Then again, given that most people are not pastors, and even fewer still are female pastors, I don’t expect to meet many more people in our situation. Working as an engineer, which is typically a male dominated profession, I’ve never come across someone who does not respond with a “oh” type of response after learning what my wife “does” for a living. After the initial shock of my unexpected response, many people will ask more about my wife’s career with intense curiosity. I suppose I’m not surprised since women Pastors are still a minority.
Marrying a Pastor doesn’t come with a guide book, and marrying a female Pastor is certainly a rare frontier. There are many articles, support groups, blogs, books, and even conferences for Pastor’s wives, but when it comes to Pastor’s husbands, it is few and far. Being a Pastor’s husband has been a 7 year journey (our entire marriage), and it seems I learn something new every year. So what have I learned?
Stand Down: As most husbands do, I like to protect my wife. Let’s face it, pastors face a beating now and then. People say things and people do things that are hurtful. Whether it is intentional or unintentional, I often feel the need to shield her. Yet, I have to allow her to be the minister God has called her to be, and sometimes this means allowing her to work through her own battles with me in the background providing her support and comfort.
Live counter-culturally: It should be quite obvious where I stand on the “women in ministry” debate, but I must say I have been surprised by some of the reactions we’ve gotten over the years. There have been the light-hearted situations like when the Mormon team (on their mission) stopped me on the sidewalk and attempted to debate theology. The look on their faces was priceless when I stepped back and let my wife take over, which I think threw them for a loop because they didn’t really have anything to say in response. On the other hand, we have had those moments where individuals just can’t get past the typical stereotypes and questions such as how it could ever work to move for my wife’s job.

Several years back, my wife was serving at a Church in Upstate New York and I was an engineer with a wonderful company. I will never forget my boss’s reaction when I told him I was resigning to move to a place where I would have no job lined up. In retrospect, maybe he did have some good points though, because I ended up working at an Olive Garden for 7 months until I found a job. Still even then, I didn’t second guess it, and never held Tara Beth to blame. For us it’s not about who will sacrifice for whom, because really we’re both sacrificing our agendas for where we feel God leading. I suspect it is the same for many Christian couples.
It’s our calling: Speaking of calling, I really do believe it is our calling. After all, the two shall become one, so how can we have different callings? Sure we have different gifts and edify the body in different ways, but my actions and how I live out my relationship with Tara Beth can greatly impact her ability to live out her calling to her fullest. For us, this can manifest in activities like talking through her sermon on a Saturday night, taking the boys out of the house for an entire day so she can meditate and write a sermon, whispering a prayer for her as she gets up to preach, reading the same theology book with her so we can discuss it, or caring for the boys and just letting her sleep in on a Saturday after a rough week of ministry. It is, after all, our calling.
Sure, there are those Sunday Mornings when I am trying to get the boys (we have two wild toddlers) ready for church after Tara Beth has already left that I wish she were home, but I have never once doubted her (no our) call. In fact, if it were easy and the sensible thing to do, I would actually start to question the perceived calling. I am not aware of many examples where God’s plan was predictable and easy.
While it can lead to some interesting situations (like having our 2 yr old yell “MOMMY” right during the sermon), it definitely places me in a unique situation to really see God’s plan in action. Though I didn’t know all that I was getting myself into, I wouldn’t even think about trading it. It is our calling.

Engaging the Public Arena as Citizens of the Kingdom
Friday, April 1, at 7:00 pmWhether it's regarding issues of civic responsibility, social justice, morality, or the protection of perceived religious liberties, how are Christians and citizens of the Kingdom called to engage the public arena? Dr. Kevin Mannoia as well as Dr. Ron Benefiel will be joined by others as they consider what it means for the Church to have and proclaim a prophetic voice to the public and political structures as ... citizens of the Kingdom. The tax-collectors and sinners kept gathering around to hear Yeshua, 2 and the P’rushim and Torah-teachers kept grumbling. “This fellow,” they said, “welcomes sinners — he even eats with them!” 3 So he told them this parable:
11 Again Yeshua said, “A man had two sons. 12 The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the estate that will be mine.’ So the father divided the property between them. 13 As soon as he could convert his share into cash, the younger son left home and went off to a distant country, where he squandered his money in reckless living. 14 But after he had spent it all, a severe famine arose throughout that country, and he began to feel the pinch.
15 “So he went and attached himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the carob pods the pigs were eating, but no one gave him any.
17 “At last he came to his senses and said, ‘Any number of my father’s hired workers have food to spare; and here I am, starving to death! 18 I’m going to get up and go back to my father and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against Heaven and against you; 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired workers.” ’ 20 So he got up and started back to his father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran and threw his arms around him and kissed him warmly. 21 His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against Heaven and against you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son — ’ 22 but his father said to his slaves, ‘Quick, bring out a robe, the best one, and put it on him; and put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet; 23 and bring the calf that has been fattened up, and kill it. Let’s eat and have a celebration! 24 For this son of mine was dead, but now he’s alive again! He was lost, but now he has been found!’ And they began celebrating.
25 “Now his older son was in the field. As he came close to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked, ‘What’s going on?’ 27 The servant told him, ‘Your brother has come back, and your father has slaughtered the calf that was fattened up, because he has gotten him back safe and sound.’ 28 But the older son became angry and refused to go inside.
“So his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 ‘Look,’ the son answered, ‘I have worked for you all these years, and I have never disobeyed your orders. But you have never even given me a young goat, so that I could celebrate with my friends. 30 Yet this son of yours comes, who squandered your property with prostitutes, and for him you slaughter the fattened calf!’ 31 ‘Son, you are always with me,’ said the father, ‘and everything I have is yours. 32 We had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead but has come back to life — he was lost but has been found.’”

Regular Morning Services at PazNaz and Valley Center
Celebrate this special day with your PazNaz family at 8:00 am and 10:30 am in the PazNaz Sanctuary or at 9:00 am in the Valley Center Sanctuary.
Maundy Thursday, March 24, at 7:00 pm
PazNaz‘s Gilmore Hall with Dr. Brad Strawn
Maundy Thursday comes from the Latin words “mandatum novum” meaning new mandate. It was Jesus’ commandment to his followers to “love one another as I have loved you.” This was exemplified by Jesus taking the role of a humble servant and washing the feet of his disciples in the last hours of his ministry. Join this service of music, readings, meditation, and partaking of the Lord’s Supper together.
Good Friday Services, March 25, at 7:00 pm
Tenebrae Service in the PazNaz Sanctuary with Dr. Kevin Mannoia
A one hour liturgical service that tells the story of God's steadfast love, Christ's sacrificial love, and the Spirit's continued work of recreation. Music and worship, Scripture and readings, light and dark come together to remember the crucifixion of Jesus and prepare the church to celebrate the resurrection.
Eggs-travaganza, Saturday, March 26, at 11:00 am
Two Locations: PazNaz Campus & Valley Center Campus
Eggs-travaganza includes multiple egg hunts, popcorn, games, prizes, and yes, a visit from the Easter Bunny himself!
Easter Sunday, March 27
PazNaz: Easter Garden (7:00 am) / Baptism (9:30 am) / Sanctuary (10:30 am)
Valley Center: Sanctuary ( 9:00 am)
Keeping with tradition, the celebration of the resurrection of our Lord begins early in the morning as the sun rises in the PazNaz Easter Garden. A full service follows in the Sanctuary, where you can worship with the Celebration Choir and Sunrise Orchestra and hear an inspirational message. There will also be a special time of baptisms between the services in the Sanctuary.
