"This Week in Worship: Palm Sunday" Reverend Brent Ross, Senior Pastor of Normal Heights United Methodist Church of San Diego, California, United States for Thursday, 17 March 2016

This Sunday is Palm Sunday!
We'll be reviewing the scripture Luke 19:28-40, and attempt to view this traditional story in a new way, as we continue to prepare for Easter Sunday. See our events below to find out how you can participate during Holy Week!
Scripture Text:
Luke 19:
28 After saying this, Yeshua went on and began the ascent to Yerushalayim. 29 As he approached Beit-Pagei and Beit-Anyah, by the Mount of Olives, he sent two talmidim, 30 instructing them, “Go into the village ahead; on entering it, you will find a colt tied up that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks why you are untying it, tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’” 32 Those who were sent went off and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 and they said, “Because the Lord needs it.” 35 They brought it to Yeshua; and, throwing their robes on the colt, they put Yeshua on it. 36 As he went along, people carpeted the road with their clothing; 37 and as he came near Yerushalayim, where the road descends from the Mount of Olives, the entire band of talmidim began to sing and praise God at the top of their voices for all the powerful works they had seen:
38 “Blessed is the King who is coming in the name of Adonai!”[
Luke 19:38 Psalm 118:26]
“Shalom in heaven!”
and
“Glory in the highest places!”
39 Some of the P’rushim in the crowd said to him, “Rabbi! Reprimand your talmidim!” 40 But he answered them, “I tell you that if they keep quiet, the stones will shout!”
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Luke 19:28-40
Verse 29

[29] And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

He drew nigh to the place where the borders of Bethphage and Bethany met, which was at the foot of the mount of Olives. Matthew 21:1; Mark 11:1.
Verse 37
[37] And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
The whole multitude began to praise God — Speaking at once, as it seems, from a Divine impulse, words which most of them did not understand.
Verse 38
[38] Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
Peace in heaven — God being reconciled to man.
Verse 39
[39] And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
Rebuke thy disciples — Paying thee this immoderate honour.
Verse 40
[40] And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
If these should hold their peace, the stones, which lie before you, would cry out - That is, God would raise up some still more unlikely instruments to declare his praise. For the power of God will not return empty.

We're welcoming you to be a part of our Holy Week & Easter festivities!
All of these events are listed below:
Holy Thursday Meal
March 24th • 6:00p-7:30p
Each year on the Thursday night before Easter, we remember the night that Jesus, right before his death, sat down with the disciples and blessed their meal together. Jesus, while sharing food and wine with those He loved, took that moment to remind them to keeping loving each other because that was the only way they would continue his work and mission.
Join us again this year for our Holy Thursday dinner, as we also live out our love for each other. A valued church member, Pat Waller, has organized a “generic” menu based on what was likely served at the Last Supper. Volunteers from the church will be signing up to provide food items for this potluck meal. All are welcome to join! If you have any questions, please email Pastor Brent at brent@nhunited.org.
Good Friday Experience
March 25th • 6:30p-8:00p
On the Friday evening before Easter, we will have a quiet, somber service in the sanctuary as we recall Jesus final hours before his death. The service will be a Tenebrae service (which means darkening) because as the story is told through the service, the sanctuary will gradually darken in observation of Christ’s death. This service will take place from 6:30p – 8:00p in the Sanctuary.
Easter Sunday Celebration
March 27th • 10:30a-1:30p
It’s the big day and we have a great way to celebrate! On Easter Sunday, we will have church at the usual time and celebrate the risen Christ… but the celebration doesn’t end in the sanctuary! At the end of service, we’ll meet up at the community center, where we will have a live band, dancing, potluck lunch, Easter egg hunt AND a real Resurrection Celebration! Carve out some time from 10:30a – 1:30p that day to come and celebrate and bring family and friends! Due to preparations for our Easter service & celebration, there will be no adult or kids’ Sunday School on Easter Sunday, but childcare will be available for ages 6 and under from 9:45a – 11:30a.

Our Sunday Schedule:
9:45-10:30 Small Groups & Sunday School
Babies & Toddlers: Community Room A
Preschool-Kindergarten: Community Room B
1st-6th Grade: Room 205 Upstairs
Adults: Social Hall
10:30-11:30 Worship Service with Child Care
Adults and children of all ages gather in the sanctuary for a time of worship that is about praising God, but also about helping each other to see the sacred in the ordinary parts of life the rest of the week. Activities are in the sanctuary for children, but childcare is available in the nursery for little ones who need it.

Here's the monthly calendar for March listing all of our events!
