Resurrection West,
This Sunday we will celebrate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem on what we call Palm Sunday. Our children will participate in a palm parade through worship with in all services, so plan now to get there early so your child can help lead us in celebrating the beginning of Holy Week. They will parade through with their Sunday School classes. Pastor Adam will be preaching and his message will move us from the triumphant entry to Christ’s sacrifice as we continue to deepen our understanding of the Gospel of John.
Next Thursday evening, March 24th, we will continue in remembrance of Jesus’ final week with a moving and meaningful service of table, word, and cross at 7pm (childcare for 4 years and under and kids packets available). We will conclude the service with the Sanctuary being draped in black as we move toward Good Friday and our day of prayer from 7am - 7pm, March 25th. The Sanctuary will be available for prayer as we remember Christ suffering upon the cross.
And then on Saturday, March 26th, we begin our Resurrection celebration with the Easter Egg Hunt, including games, candy, a visit from the Easter bunny and more from 3pm - 5pm. Invite your neighbors and friends for this all ages event!
Right after the hunt, we will begin our first of five Easter worship services Saturday evening, March 26th, at 5:30pm. Sunday we continue with 8am, 9:30am, 11:15pm, and 5pm (childcare for 4 years and under and kids packets available). If you call RezWest home, please consider worshiping at one of our lesser attended services on Sunday - 8am or 5pm. Please also consider serving in one of the many volunteer roles you will see below.

In closing this morning I though I’d share with you a word about visitors. We have many first-time visitors to our worship services and we hope to welcome them with love and care - extending what we call “radical hospitality”. I see many of you extending this type of hospitality each week when you help someone find a seat, or offer to get them a cup of coffee, help them know about the soothing room, walk them down to KiDSCOR check-in, or simply smile and introduce yourself. This is so important!
If a visitor is willing to sign in when we pass the attendance books and share their address (which I understand if they aren’t. If you are like me I might not sign in either on my first visit to something unfamiliar. It helps that they see our members making this a priority). We have awesome volunteers that then deliver a mug to their home to say thank you for worshiping with us. Our team of “muggers” are intentional not to come inside or impose in any way. This is simply a way to let our visitors know that we are glad they came. After their 3rd time visiting they receive a note from Dave Robertson, our Director of Community Life, on how they might get connected into smaller groups, alpha, or other upcoming activities and missions. After their 5th visit, it is my privilege to reach out and connect with them as the campus pastor. These are some of my favorite appointments each week. Hearing people’s stories, answering questions about our church, and listening to the way God is speaking to their hearts is inspiring! I hear time and time again how you have made them feel so welcome, offered a personal invitation, and how they are so glad they found our church! This is no small thing and I wanted to take a moment to celebrate and say, “well done church”. This is good and beautiful Kingdom work and I am honored to serve in such a place where welcoming the stranger is such a high value. May God continue to move through this church body and may we each be like the Gospel of John, revealing God’s glory through a welcoming attitude, authentic relationships and building Christian community!
Looking forward to worshiping with you on Sunday,
Pastor Jason

Resurrection West,
Remember to spring forward this Saturday evening by setting your clocks forward one hour!
I’m excited to share with you that our builders are mobilizing onto the property right now as you are reading this. I even held up sending my eNote to share some pics with you! Below you will see pics of the trailer moving into place and a pic of Butch Chasteen, from A.L. Huber, who was also on-site overseeing our first phase building! Join me now in daily prayers for safety over our builders as phase II gets underway. We are on schedule to open the doors at Thanksgiving!
Sunday, it will be my privilege to preach live as we continue the Gospel of John series. We will take a closer look at chapters 15,16, & 17. In this continued farewell discourse Jesus speaks of bearing fruit, shares a heart-to-heart discussion about his death with his friends, and spends time praying for his disciples and for all of us. I’m going to teach us a song from my childhood (you may know it too) and share some testimonies and practical ways that we turn our grief into joy in this human experience. I look forward to worship on Sunday, so remember to set your clocks forward!
Next Sunday, March 20th, we will celebrate what we call “Palm Sunday”. We will remember Christ’s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem, where the crowds waved palm branches to honor him. Our children will participate in a palm parade through worship with their Sunday School classes in all services, so plan now to get there early on March 20th so your child can help lead us in celebrating the beginning of the holiest week in the Christian calendar!

Finally, today is my wife’s birthday today (and its a big one). Her identical twin sister, Mary, flew in last night to surprise her and share their birthday weekend together. It was a beautiful moment when she arrived home to discover Mary jumping out in surprise! I just knew our daughters wouldn’t be able to hold back the knowledge, but they did (even though our 7-year old Kaia felt terrible about not telling mommy about Aunt Mary coming - mom quickly forgave her after her heart-felt confession). Scharme and I have been together since she was 18 years old and I was 21. Today I am so grateful for her love, partnership, and care for our children and support for me over all these years and I thank God for her life! I’ve added a pic of Scharme and Mary together last night at the end of the building-site pics below. Scharme is on the left.
Looking forward to worshiping with you on Sunday,

Resurrection West,
On Tuesday evening we celebrated the inaugural season of Upward Basketball with over 360 in attendance. We are so grateful for an incredible group of volunteers who served as coaches, referees, and behind-the-scenes. it was a great celebration as the players from Kindergarten through 6th grade received a certificate from the coaches, enjoyed cupcakes, cheered on the video montage of the season, tok an historic season one player/coach picture, and were entertained by an illusionist and his amazing assistant (also known as Pastor Jason and my oldest daughter Hailey). I’ve included a couple of pics at the conclusion of this eNote.
This Sunday we continue unpacking the Gospel of John as Pastor Adam preaches into the farewell discourse focusing on John 13-14, "An Example, a Command and a Promise." It will be a great day of worship as we continue in this Lenten journey toward Easter!
I just got word yesterday that we have now heard back from all of our sub-contractors and have a zero-line budget. Mobilization on the Phase II building will begin the week of March 14th. I can already imagine the Sunday coffee and conversation in the cafe, mid-week groups gathering to study and pray, and babies being rocked in the new nurseries. We will open doors right around Thanksgiving, which means it will be quite a Christmas season as we live into our new space!

---------------------
Resurrection West,
We continue in this season of Lent and I’ve been reflecting on Ephesians 1:19 which says: how tremendous is the power available to us who believe in God. When we make firm our connection with God, his life and power flow through us.
We unpacked this verse in last Sunday’s message in conjunction with the miraculous signs of Jesus described in the Gospel of John. My hope is that we continue to live into Christ's light that we would have have a life that reveals God’s glory - just as we see in the Gospel of John! Many of you have been on this journey as we read and study John and its not too late if you haven’t started to read the gospel of John this lenten season as we continue exploring why Jesus matters on Sundays. Resurrection West,
This past Sunday we began a new sermon series unpacking John, the Gospel of light and life. One of our traditions is to read the first words of John each and every Candlelight Christmas Eve. These words begin the passing of the light of Christ and remind us that "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”. Its been an enriching experience spending time in study and reflection on the first chapter of John and I look forward to sharing the message I believe God has for us as we continue in this study with chapter 2. The sermon is entitled "Miraculous Signs" and my hope is that you would invite a friend this Sunday to learn something new about the signs and wonders of God and the power of Jesus!
This past Tuesday evening the building committee met to walk through the final budget of our phase 2 building development. We are within $37,000 to a zero-line of our overall $3.7 million dollar budget. Our architects, builders, and committee members worked through details and we have come through the permitting process with the city of Olathe. We feel very good about moving forward (barring a couple of lighting sub-contractor bids that should bring our budget to zero so we can move forward). Please continue to pray for the work that is happening behind the scenes to bring forth excavation on the property soon. I want to thank the building committee for their incredible work. The schedule has been adjusted to open doors close to Thanksgiving later this year!

In conclusion, I have been participating in what's called Orders and Fellowship Meeting in Lincoln, Nebraska this week. This is an annual continuing educational gathering for all pastors in the Great Plains Conference. Our learnings have been centered around God's call to serve in full-time vocational ministry. I remind you that we have a goal here at Resurrection to identify, encourage, and support 200 or more individuals by 2020 into full-time ministry. You may be one of those people! We've had four individuals from RezWest alone who are in what we call the "ministry candidate process". God may be calling you to serve as a pastor, missionary, youth director, worship leader, or another full-time vocational ministry role. If you are feeling this nudge in your life, please reach out and connect with me. I'll buy the coffee to share in conversation, prayer, and discovery of what God's path may be for you!
Looking forward to worshiping with you on Sunday,
Pastor Jason

Resurrection West,
I hope you are enjoying a wonderful morning as you read this eNote. Yesterday was a great day of ministry as Pastor Chris gave me the update that you brought in 335 bags of food to feed those in need in our community! This was a wonderful end to a day filled with appointments with people asking deep questions about faith and one young lady (9 years old) working on her "God and Me" badge for Scouts. The day reminded me how thankful I am to serve God here at West and how much I love all of you!
Tomorrow morning join us for FaithWork at 9 am, Rez West Sanctuary. Come serve God by serving those in need. Adults and children of all ages are welcome to help with kid-friendly mission opportunities. This month we will sort the food items brought in from the 335 bags from the Souper Bowl Food Drive, make valentines for the elderly, prepare shoe-making kits for Uganda and create cozy blankets for animal shelter pets. Contact Chris.Holliday@cor.org for more information.

Resurrection West,
Today is Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of the Lenten season. We will gather for worship tonight at 7:00pm to share in prayer, praise, message, the imposition of the ashes, and an opportunity to offer our sins into the fires as we exit the Sanctuary (childcare will be available for four years and under and there are no rezlife youth groups tonight). We encourage our teens to join in worship tonight for Ash Wednesday.
Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection.
Jesus, as part of his spiritual preparation, went into the wilderness and fasted 40 days and 40 nights, according to the Gospels. Lent is a very personal time of self-reflection. Some choose to give up a certain food, however a spirit of fasting can include restriction of activities such as television watching, shopping or social networking. Some choose to give away clothing or possessions, give time by volunteering or increase time spent in prayer. We fast to reorient ourselves away from the distraction of those things and back toward God.
Take a look at the opportunities here at West to grow in knowing, loving, and serving God this Lenten season.

Finally, we begin Lent next week with an Ash Wednesday worship service on Feb. 10th at 7pm. This will kick off the season of Lent leading up to Holy Week and Easter Weekend when we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Make plans now to join us on March 26th for an Easter Egg Hunt and Easter worship beginning that evening and all day on March 27th. Ash Wednesday is referred to as the “day of ashes” as we reflect upon our mortality and need for redemption. It’s exactly 40 days before Easter (excluding Sundays) when we take time to fast, sacrifice, and remember Christ’s sacrifice for all. That evening will be a service of penitence. I will be preaching on the subject of repentance (turning away from sin) and we will share in prayer, song, the imposition of the ashes, and the burning of our sins as we leave the Sanctuary. This is always a meaningful worship experience to begin this Lenten journey, along with our John series in worship and our Monday-night study. Resurrection West,
I am excited to share that we approved three candidates for ministry at our Church Conference gathering this past Tuesday night at the downtown campus; Tina Kolm, Wendy Connelly, and Resurrection West’s own Lisa Dethloff were all confirmed by our church to continue on their path toward pastoral ministry! At the conclusion of my eNote you will see a pic as we paused to pray over these candidates. This is a powerful moment in every candidate’s journey and it means a great deal be confirmed by your home church. You may have felt a nudge from God or may be exploring a possible call into ministry. If you’d like to meet sometime to explore that possibility, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Finally, I wanted to thank you for blessing me and my family as I reached ten years of service here at Resurrection. You should know that the Staff-Parish committee and Human Resources team offer a generous gift at a person's 10-year mark. Pastor Adam presented to me a Waterford Crystal Cross, an extra week of vacation, and a night on the plaza for my wife and I to spend together at Thursday's staff chapel. Resurrection is truly a wonderful place to serve and to work. Our church has been ranked one of the Best Christian Workplaces in America and that is because of your investment and generosity to care for our pastors and staff here. I am forever thankful that God called me and my family to serve here! We are overwhelmed by the love and care you've shown in the last decade of our lives. May God continue to move and guide us together here as we build Christian community where non-religious and nominally religious people are becoming deeply committed Christians!
Looking forward to worshiping with you on Sunday,

Resurrection West,
I am excited to share that we approved three candidates for ministry at our Church Conference gathering this past Tuesday night at the downtown campus; Tina Kolm, Wendy Connelly, and Resurrection West’s own Lisa Dethloff were all confirmed by our church to continue on their path toward pastoral ministry! I’d love to hear your story and share a cup of coffee. Lisa, Wendy, and Tina - we are behind you all the way!
