Sunday's Scripture:
Luke 19:1 He entered and was passing through Jericho. 2 There was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 He was trying to see who Yeshua was, and couldn’t because of the crowd, because he was short. 4 He ran on ahead, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was going to pass that way. 5 When Yeshua came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” 6 He hurried, came down, and received him joyfully. 7 When they saw it, they all murmured, saying, “He has gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner.”
8 Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor. If I have wrongfully exacted anything of anyone, I restore four times as much.”
9 Yeshua said to him, “Today, salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.”(Messianic WEB)
John Wesley’s note~Commentary for Luke 19:1-10
Verse 1. He passed through Jericho - So that Zaccheus must have lived near the end of the town: the tree was in the town itself. And he was rich - These words seem to refer to the discourse in the last chapter, ver. 24, particularly to ver. 27. Zaccheus is a proof, that it is possible by the power of God for even a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Verse 2. The chief of the publicans - What we would term, commissioner of the customs. A very honourable as well as profitable place.
Verse 4. And running before - With great earnestness. He climbed up - Notwithstanding his quality: desire conquering honour and shame.
Verse 5. Jesus said, Zaccheus, make haste and come down - What a strange mixture of passions must Zaccheus have now felt, hearing one speak, as knowing both his name and his heart!
Verse 7. They all murmured - All who were near: though most of them rather out of surprise than indignation.
Verse 8. And Zaccheus stood - Showing by his posture, his deliberate, purpose and ready mind, and said, Behold, Lord, I give - I determine to do it immediately.
Verse 9. He also is a son of Abraham - A Jew born, and as such has a right to the first offer of salvation.
Verse 10. Matt. xviii, 11.
11. They thought the kingdom of God - A glorious temporal kingdom, would immediately appear.

All the Saints Before Us
As we get ready to send this week's eNews on Halloween, I am thinking of the holy traditions of All Saints' Day--of its invitation to remember that the Church (in it's biggest, truest sense) contains not only those of us who remain in this life, but also those who've gone before us. When we gather in worship, and at the communion table, they are somehow, through the wondrous mystery of God, present with us.
Calling to mind the lives of those who have gone before me, whose faith has shaped my own, I am filled with gratitude. The preciousness of this life reminds us of how important it is to live well.
In that spirit, I share this poem, which comes from the Episcopal Church:
"May God, who has given us, in the lives of his saints,
patterns of holy living and victorious dying,
strengthen your faith and devotion
and enable you to bear witness to the truth
against all adversity. Amen."
with gratitude and hope,
Pastor Molly

Last Sunday’s All Church Pot-luck luncheon was the least attended in memory. Hope you will put the next one, the last Sunday in November, on your calendar. The one thing about a pot-luck meal is that everything brought tastes great and even though less may attend, there’s always enough for those attending. The more showing up, the more food. There are also those important diligent women who lay out the supplies, and clean up. They deserve a great deal of thanks for their hard work.
If you have never attended an annual Charge Conference, it is a way to learn more about our church’s progress and plans for the future. The one we are having this Saturday, November 9 at the North Redondo Beach St. Paul’s United Methodist Church will be for four churches so we’ll learn what our United Methodist neighbors are up to as well. I remember my first Annual Charge Conference many years ago. I was truly impressed with the preparation and the total effort being done to present our church to our local community. You won’t be sorry if you attend.
