HOW TO. A lady shows a follically abbreviated guy how to kiss in public. The Song of Songs shows everyone how to kiss in private. Photo by Thomas Leuthard/flickr.
VALENTINE’S DAY is coming. Saturday. I’ve already sent a box of chocolates to Mom, signing it for Dad, who died in 2001. He always gave her a heart-shaped box of chocolates. My brothers and I kept up that tradition for Dad by sending Mom chocolates and flowers in Dad’s name.
I told a florist why I was signing the card “Sweetie,” since that’s not normally what a Mom calls her grown son.
The florist got a little choked up.
I guess anyone missing their dad might react like that.
Mom’s one thing. My wife’s another.
With my wife, this Valentine’s Day thing is a two-way street with lips that should be headed on a collision course.
I don’t mean to kiss. Necessarily. At least not right away.
The lips talk first. They say nice things to each other.
The Bible showcases a book of love talk. Here’s a sampling. If you’ve got the nerve, grab your lover and take turns reading to each other this paraphrase from the Song of Songs.
GUY
Darling, you are beautiful. Your eyes are as bright as a morning dove. (1:15)
GAL
Lover, I like what I hear. And I love what I see. (1:16)
GUY
Let me look at your face. Your lovely face. And let me hear your voice. Your sweet voice. (2:14)
GAL
You belong to me, my love. I belong to you. (2:16)
GUY
Your lips brush upon me like silk, smooth, beautiful, and welcoming. (3:3)
Your love is better than wine. More delicious. More intoxicating. (3:10)
You are my own personal vineyard, a garden of delight. (3:12)
GAL
This garden is open for business. Lover, have I got some fruit for you. (3:16)
GUY
Turn those gorgeous eyes of yours away. When you look at me like that, I get too excited. (6:5)
GAL
Relax lover. I belong to you. (6:10)
Keep me close.
Like a necklace always near your heart.
Like a ring always near your touch. (8:6)
