Jeff Kirby for The United Methodst Church of the Resurrection Men's Ministry for Sunday, 1 February 2015

The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection for February 2015
Greetings Men of Resurrection,
January is often a bland month for me. The Holidays are over, the decorations are down and winter is just gaining momentum. However, one of the very bright spots for me is the growing sense of anticipation I have for our annual Men’s Spiritual Retreat. Over the past several years this event has become a highlight for me. It is so awesome seeing our student center filled with guys of all ages and backgrounds singing, learning and enjoying each other’s company. So many of the men who have become close friends and partners in various ministries I first met at the retreat. This year our theme is “All In.” Chris Folmsbee, Jason Gant, Ron Smith and I will be speaking on various ways of living a life of passionate discipleship. We will enjoy rich worship, wonderful meals and challenging messages on God’s call to discipleship. The men’s annual spiritual retreat is an event that you will not want to miss! Below, I want to introduce you to a man who has become a good friend and a source of courage and strength to me over the past several years. Gerry Minor worked his way up to become one of the national leaders at the Ford Motor Company. In retirement, Gerry returned to his childhood faith, a faith which helped sustain him when faced with one of life’s worst blows.
I hope to see you March 6 and 7.
I’m All In. Are you?
Jeff
Interview with Gerry Minor:
Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from? What was your job?I was born in a small town in Michigan in 1938. The town St. Clair has about 5000 people and is approximately 60 miles north of Detroit and is located on the side of the St. Clair River. This river drains into Lake Huron and has a very fast current. I was the youngest of six children: 2 girls and 4 boys. We were quite poor as my mother cleaned houses and my father was a basic handyman. We had 2 bedrooms and one bathroom and no hot water or shower until I was 15 years old. We heated water in a large copper tub on a basement gas stove and 2 people carried it to our bathtub. The bathroom was not heated. I played football, basketball, baseball and golf. Why? Hot showers in the school, yeah!
We lived across the street from the Methodist Church and belonged to the M.Y.F. and sang in the junior choir. I attended the Methodist Camp every summer for one week. Much like a Bible Study Camp. Our Minister ate with us regularly because we caught a lot of walleye fish and he was from England and fish were a big part of their diet. When I was a junior in high school, he had a heart attack so 3 of us boys led the service every Sunday, alternating each week. He would handle the sermon. It was a “piece of work” because all of us also were in the senior choir.
My youth was good. Caddied during the summer. Was the janitor on weekends at the church. Finished college, a business major, but received a teaching certificate because I wanted to coach. Ended up at Fort Riley as a First Lieutenant and left the Army after we almost debarked for Cuba. That was close enough to Russia for me!
The Army taught many leadership skills that allowed me the opportunity to join the Ford Motor Company in 1963 as a production line foreman building Lincolns and Thunderbirds. As I moved up in the company I had to work at 2 plants to get moved up at all positions. As a result I moved 7 times and worked for 10 different plant managers. I became a fleet manager in Edison, New Jersey, and moved to Louisville, Kentucky, a bigger plant and higher volume. I ended my career at Claycomo, MO at the highest volume plant in the world building 2200 vehicles per day. 6 days a week on the truck side. In 1999, I had heart surgery and decided to retire. I was asked to stay and become the director of six sigma implementation for all North American stamping, assembly, engineering and service organizations. My retirement date arrived and the president of the company gave me a party at which time he asked me to go to Turkey and build a new plant. I replied “I don’t think so?!” The person that took the job lasted 2 months. 14 hours a day—7 days a week.
How would you describe yourself in terms of the Christian faith?
I have returned to the “Good News.” Jeff was very instrumental in getting me back on track as he was trying to save my son from alcoholism. He died and I became alive again. Thank you!? This may sound like a “cop out,” but it was very difficult to think about getting back to church, but it really was. No time for family or faith? The death of a child brings about a very real check on the important issues in life. I do believe that God has enough love for all of us—just return his love.
In what ways has God become more than just a word to you?
A difficult question. God is in our hearts. I could thank him for that I have in my wife and friends and the ability to care about others first. And I do! Am I sure this is enough? No, I don’t think so. Going to the Tuesday and Wednesday Bible Study Group Meetings has brought new faith to my life. People such as Jeff lead us in ways that I truly feel in my heart the love for God and all those that are in our classes with Jeff. Leadership is not easy, but Jeff knows the way to our hearts and it feels really good!
