Trinity United Methodist Church of Gainesville, Florida, United States Tuesday Word for Tuesday, 17 February 2015
Worship: Sundays @ 8:15 am, 9:40 am, 11:00 am | Wednesdays @ 6:35 pm | Fridays @ 7:00 pm
Dear Friends,
I've been living in a cloud of darkness since seeing the images of the many Christians lined up the Libyan seashore with their ISIS executioners by their side. To single out innocent, Christian people for death because of their religious beliefs is evil and wrong. We stand with our Christian brothers and sisters who are being targeted by ISIS and other Islamic extremists. We name ISIS as the evil that it is.Besides knowing, from their actions, that ISIS is evil incarnate, we know so little about them, but I commend to your reading this article from The Atlantic, entitled "What Isis Really Wants." Here is the subtitle: "The Islamic State is no mere collection of psychopaths. It is a religious group with carefully considered beliefs, among them that it (ISIS) is a key agent of the coming apocalypse." This is to say that ISIS believes it is a central player in bringing about the "End of Times." Consequently, it believes that any and all actions justify this greater end - even and particularly the brutal killing of innocent people - in order to provoke the coming "final battle."
What to do? While normally I am a vigorous proponent of peace and the practices of peace, I believe at this juncture the non-ISIS world has a moral obligation to act to protect the innocent persons who are being murdered - at a far greater rate, I think, than what we've been told. It is morally and spiritually negligent to do nothing.
And, because of the radical, passionate belief that ISIS holds as to their perceived "role" in the drama of history, the likelihood of persuasion is non-existent, which makes this even more difficult; hence, such things as economic sanctions are of no effect.
Which makes one question: "How is ISIS funded so abundantly?" Sure, there is some oil under their control, but any country in the world that would buy their oil is complicit in their criminal and evil actions.
For a Christian to encourage the use of violence should always be a "measure of last resort." All other ways of changing the situation should be engaged. But a Christian may also, begrudgingly, reluctantly, but with a sense of moral obligation to the innocents, come to the conclusion that forceful intervention is required. And that seems to me to be where we are.
As we come tomorrow night to Ash Wednesday service (7:00), preceded by dinner from 5:30 on, I invite you to come prayerfully, for our world in pain, for our Christian brothers and sisters who are the object of persecution and killing; praying that during this season of Lent we might be even more earnest in our praying. Solidarity with those who are persecuted is a noble and daunting task. This service will be live streamed, so if you are are unable to make it, you can still experience it by going to our YouTube channel at 7:00 pm.
This Sunday, I hope you will be in worship as I have a special friend, Randy Adams (the men on our recent Men's retreat met Randy) who is new to Trinity, and also does beautiful pottery. My sermon will be on the Scripture in Jeremiah 18 about the Potter, and Randy will have his potter's wheel working clay at each of the three services. God is shaping us; God is shaping you, and Lent is that special season where God seems especially diligent in shaping. Also, Sonlight will be singing "Raging Fire" by Philip Philips. I'll see you Sunday at "the Potter's House."
Rev. Dan
P.S. Elise and Steve Caton's Sunday School class, "Family Business," is starting a great new study based on the book: Roaring Lambs; A Gentle Plan to Radically Change the World by Bob Briner; they meet at 11:00 in room 203. I encourage you to give this a try - or any of our several Sunday School classes.

A Word from Rev. Esther
Rev. Esther's Blog
Blessed Tuesday! We are one day away from the beginning of Lent. Two questions I ask myself with each new liturgical season (especially Lent) is, "How am I different this [Lent] than last year?" and "Have I/in what ways have I grown since last year?" I'm asking myself those questions this week as well as getting ready to observe this holy and powerful season through taking on the practice of journaling. I'm also going to read a book -- but I still haven't decided which one. How are you planning to observe Lent? I hope you will begin by attending our Ash Wednesday service tomorrow at 7 p.m. I have been given the opportunity to preach at this special service, for which I'm thankful -- I hope to see you there!

Friends, I cannot believe that tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, bringing with it the season of Lent. If you are looking for a Lenten devotion (in addition to our DSE, of course!), I would like to invite you to go to lecfamily.org/lentand sign up to receive in your email a daily #pictureLent devotion. LEC Family is the wonderful, intergenerational program ministry of the Life Enrichment Center, a retreat facility of our Florida Annual Conference near Leesburg. If that isn't reason enough to entice you then let me also tell you that many of Trinity's very own clergy, past and present, contributed devotions this year - Dan Johnson, Esther Rodriguez, David Allen, Monique McBride, Kandace Brooks, Mark Becker, and me. Looking forward to our Lenten journey together.

Moving Florida's Children Forward: David Lawrence and Vance Aloupis will discuss the history and progress of the Children's Movement of Florida on February 23 at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora. The Bob Graham Center's 2014 Citizen of the Year and Young Floridian award recipients will address the importance of improving Florida's VPK program, implementing skill building programs for parents, securing health insurance for all children, establishing high-quality mentoring programs and early screening for children with special needs. The Children's Movement is a non-partisan grassroots organization which advocates for the investment in Florida's children during the first five years of life.
