The Upper Room Daily Devotionals in Nashville, Tennessee, United States "Taste and See" for Tuesday, 31 January 2017 with Scripture Psalm 34:8 (7) The angel of Adonai, who encamps
around those who fear him, delivers them.
9 (8) Taste, and see that Adonai is good.
How blessed are those who take refuge in him!
10 (9) Fear Adonai, you holy ones of his,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
11 (10) Young lions can be needy, they can go hungry,
but those who seek Adonai lack nothing good.
12 (11) Come, children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of Adonai.
13 (12) Which of you takes pleasure in living?
Who wants a long life to see good things?
14 (13) [If you do,] keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from deceiving talk;

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.[Psalm 34:8 (NIV)]
When I asked about the growing popularity of gator-tail cuisine, people often said, “It tastes like chicken.” However, when I thought of an alligator, I could not imagine that any part of it would taste good, let alone “like chicken.”
After a trusted co-worker tried the exotic dish at a local restaurant, I decided to try it myself. It didn’t taste like chicken, but it was a lot better than I had expected. When fried, it reminded me of shrimp; and in sausage, its flavor was surprisingly flavorful and rich.
I realized that the pattern I displayed toward this new food — apprehension, trial, and joy — appears in my faith as well. The psalmists frequently wrote of the goodness, majesty, mercy, abundance, and love of God — encouraging each of us to go beyond knowing of God’s glory to “taste and see” for ourselves that God is good.
Like tasting and trying a great new food, when we taste the goodness of God we find a love and grace that satisfies and nourishes. It can exceed our imagination and remind us of our heart’s deepest longing. God is rich in goodness and in steadfast love.
The Author: Cassius Rhue (South Carolina, USA)
Thought for the Day: God’s grace can nourish and satisfy me.
Prayer: Dear God, our hearts are desperate for truth, love, hope, and joy. In you, we find all the goodness we seek. Thank you. Amen.
Prayer focus: Cooks
