Weekly eNote from Senior Pastor Adam Hamilton for Friday, 27 January 2017 from The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, United States

Dear Resurrection Family,
I’m really excited about tonight’s annual All Church Gathering. This evening we invite our members and any visitors who wish to attend to dream together about where God is leading us in the next year or two. Each campus is hosting their own gathering this year – your campus pastor included information about it in your campus e-note today.
At Leawood we’ll gather at 6:30 pm in the current sanctuary. We’ll have opening music, then we’ll look at what will become of our current sanctuary once we move into our permanent sanctuary. You’ll hear of the dreams for the space, see architect’s renderings and we’ll talk about finishing what we’ve started. Then we’ll make our way to the new sanctuary. The chancel choir will be singing in the new narthex. We’ll step into the new sanctuary where we’ll invite you to pray as you walk through the space. It will be a very exciting evening! Join us from 6:30 to 8:30 pm tonight for the All Church Gathering.
This weekend we’ll continue our series of sermons on fear by looking at The Fear of Failure. Most of us have known this fear. It is the number one fear reported among those under 50 in our congregation. Its siblings are fear of disappointing others, fear of taking risks and self-doubt to name just a few. In the sermon we’ll hear from basketball great Michael Jordan, we’ll look at what the experts say about overcoming this fear, and we’ll see how the scriptures speak to this common fear. Invite a friend and join us for the fourth in our series on UnAfraid: Living with Courage and Hope.
This past weekend we welcomed 252 new members into the church! At Leawood we welcomed 104 households, 155 adults and 71 children; Resurrection Blue Springs welcomed 9 new members, representing 4 households with 6 adults and 3 children. Resurrection Downtown welcomed 17 new members, representing 9 households with 14 adults and 3 children. Our new member’s names are at the bottom of this eNote. Please look over the list and reach out to those you know to welcome them to our church family.
For those interested in joining the church who are a part of the Resurrection West campus, this Sunday is your chance to explore membership and to join if you choose to. The mechanism for joining at all of our campuses is Coffee with the Pastors. This Sunday those at Resurrection West will hear from Pastor Jason about what it means to be a Christian, a Methodist and a member of Resurrection. Coffee with the Pastors at West is this Sunday, January 29, at 3:00 pm.
This weekend begins our Annual Souper Bowl Food Drive. Help us Sack Hunger in Kansas City by donating non-perishable food items during the Souper Bowl Food Drive. Pick up a bag beginning Saturday, January 28 and return by Sunday, February 12 to drive us toward the goal of 40 tons of food collected this year. No time to shop? You can also provide a monthly or one-time cash or check donation by using the envelopes or EFT forms available at the Souper Bowl displays, you can also give online by clicking here and selecting Hunger under giving type. For more information or to volunteer click here.
Our Food Collection ministry is also offering a behind the scene glimpse of their ministry. Register here to join us February 12 for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of our ministries. You'll serve from 4:30-6:30 pm, and will need to dress for the weather. Everyone and all ages welcome, but those who can lift 10-15 pound bags are needed. Volunteers will be collecting food donations at our Hunger Stopper trucks in the church parking lots from 4:30-5:15 pm. Then we'll follow the trucks to the church warehouse at 15455 Metcalf to unload and sort the donations until 6:30 pm. This is a great serve opportunity for Small Groups!
I’m hoping you might join me in giving blood this coming Monday or Tuesday at Resurrection Leawood. I think of this as one small way of identifying with Christ’s self-giving for us, as we seek to save others. Share the Gift of Life by donating at the Blood Drive – Monday, January 30, and Tuesday, January 31, 8 am – 8 pm, Leawood Narthex (Bldg. B). Resurrection's Blood Drive has been giving back to the community for over 20 years. Anyone who is healthy, at least 16 years old and weighs at least 110 pounds may donate. Sign up online to donate. The blood drive is busiest between 5-7 pm. Appointments are encouraged. Walk-ins are welcome. If you are unable to donate but would like to participate, sign up to volunteer at the blood drive.
We have heard from some of the businesses located in the office park just north of building C (the north side of 137th Street). Some of the offices are open for business on Sundays, but Resurrection members have been parking in their spots for Sunday School or worship making it difficult for their clients to find parking spaces. Let’s be good neighbors to them and avoid parking in those lots – we’ll have “No Church Parking” signs up in a week or two (they are on order) but until then please refrain from parking in those lots. I’d like to invite as many of you as possible to join me in parking in the new south lots, just behind the new sanctuary – we have hundreds of empty parking spaces out there and it is the easiest parking to get in and out of.
This week on my blog I’ve posted an article called, The God Christians Believe In – it is an excerpt from chapter one of my book, Creed. If you are interested, you can read it by clicking here. It looks at the foundational statement that Christians believe in God, and the fact that this statement is not incompatible with scientific inquiry.
I’ve been thinking the last couple of days about bullies and bullying. I’ve seen the effects of bullying on kids in our congregation. The New Oxford Annotated Dictionary defines bullying as using “superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants.” I’m grateful for movements like The Bully Project which is aimed at helping parents, teachers and others to stop bullying in their schools and neighborhoods. Parents if you are not familiar with it, you might take a look at The Bully Project website, it has resources to help if your kids are being bullied.
I’m excited about tonight’s All Church Gathering (6:30 pm) and looking forward to this weekend in worship as we consider how we overcome our fear of failure, risk and self-doubt and instead live UnAfraid, with courage and hope!
In Christ’s Love,
Adam
