Healed to Serve
The story of Moses (Masa) in the highlands of PNG. From getting caught in the crossfire of warring tribals to his redemption through the miracles that unfolded in his life.
Papua New Guinea: Thirty years ago on a Thursday evening, a young surgeon newly arrived at the Kudjip Hospital station in the heart of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, was getting ready to bring the evening devotion to the Nazarene missionary community. He was interrupted by news of an injured young boy in desperate need of reparative surgery. There had been a fight among enemy family lines at the road junction market area and 11-year old Masa, a young man who did not belong to either line, had got caught in the crossfire. He had been found under the tea bushes on the other side of the road with a machete wound in his back. A Christian man mercifully carried him to Kudjip Nazarene Hospital.
Life in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea is hard and often dangerous for its people. Tribal warfare and revenge killings ravage the interior of the country. Through Nazarene Health Ministries, Kudjip Hospital has been resetting broken bones, stitching wounds, diagnosing diseases and providing essential health care to its inhabitants for over 50 years.
Jim Radcliffe rushed to the small hospital’s operating theatre. Surgery was begun immediately. There was no discernible blood pressure. Anesthesia was not needed since Masa was comatose. There was intense bleeding but the source could not be found. They did find a huge blood clot at the back of the abdomen. Out of desperation the doctors stopped and prayed asking God, “Where do we go?” The team turned their eyes back to the exposed internal abdomen of young Masa trying to follow the trail of blood. Charlied Gray immediately discovered the severed renal artery. The affected kidney and blood clot were removed and Masa was stitched up and sent to the ward.
Masa stayed unconscious for 3 days. The staff prayed constantly for his recovery. They recognized that God had already gone before them. An American nurse, Jan Watson serving at the Highlands clinic, had been led by Him to pursue anesthesia training while on home assignment when there was not yet a doctor assigned to the clinic. Without her aid during the surgery, young Masa might not have lasted on the table.
When Masa regained consciousness, the hospital chaplains and staff were able to piece together his young life. The hospital chaplains and medical staff shared the Good News of God’s love and redemptive plan with Masa. The healthcare professionals at Kudjip are about so much more than the physical needs of its patients. When the paralytic man was brought to Jesus, He first forgave his sins then healed him. He was concerned with the state of the man’s soul. So are the doctors and Kudjip and always have been.
Just a week following the surgery that restored his life to him, he was released. At home in his village, he made a decision to follow Christ when two single missionary women of the Evangelical Brotherhood Church visited him. He started going to school, entering first grade at the age of 11. Later, as a young man, he attended vocational school studying animal husbandry and carpentry along with Bible classes.
During this time Jim Radcliff and his family stayed in contact with Masa, visiting him in his village. Masa began to lay preaching in new-start Nazarene churches. He married a young woman named Elizabeth. They had 2 boys and an adopted girl. Masa had his ups and downs on his spiritual journey but the continued support of the Radcliff family has helped him to stay the course. Today his two boys in 10th and 12th grade are at the top of their classes and are active in the church. Masa is pastoring a church restart in an area that is plagued by heavy tribal fighting.
In October 2017, masa after several years of study was ordained as a pastor in the Church of the Nazarene. For an unknown reason, his ordination certificate gave his name as Moses. As the General Superintendent laid his hands upon Masa he prayer that Pastor “Moses” would save his nation. Masa was very inspired by this name change and claimed it as his own.
So Masa, the young boy who had been in the wrong place at the wrong time, not knowing where to go in life has a new name and a purpose – to save his people from the bloody conflicts that nearly took his life by sharing God’s love with them. (Written by: Linda Louw)
Holiness Writers Conference 2018 held in Manila, Philippines
More than 50 representatives from the eleven Philippine districts as well as nations of Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Thailand gathered in Manila from 28 February to 3 March 2018 for the second Asia-Pacific Regional Holiness Writers Conference.

Anointed by the Holy Spirit, Dr. Neville Bartle retired District Superintendent and missionary from New Zealand, taught us Biblical foundations of holiness as Christlikeness and the true victory we have in this life because Christ was our complete sacrifice that triumphed over sin, death, and evil. Together we began to see that holiness as Christlikeness must be our lifestyle demonstrated in forgiveness, surrender of self-love, submission and compassion as Jesus’ hands and feet in a broken world as we await the day when all will be fully restored in God’s image. David Ackerman, the Education Coordinator of Philippine and Micronesia Field, reflected, “He caused all of us to think deeply about what it means to be a follower of Jesus. He also challenged some of the easy answers we give about holiness. Those who attended will need to return to his ideas and rethink some of our own ideas. I personally found his messages challenging and refreshing. I learned a lot.”
In addition to the morning teaching sessions by Neville, participants attended workshops throughout the week on topics such as photography, video production, writing articles and sermon illustrations, writing discipleship lessons and curriculum for children and adults, illustrating holiness themes, writing for small groups, blog writing, and basic writing principles.
Fruit of the conference began to be seen immediately in answers to prayer. God moved among us throughout the week during daily focused prayer times for each of the nations represented, a time of prayer response to the teachings on Friday morning and during a concert of prayer and praise on Friday night. Answered prayers ranged from a participant’s lost mobile phone being found to pastors’ hearts being revived. One participant shared honestly on Friday, “I hate writing. I didn’t want to come to this conference, but I’m glad I came. God is doing something here.” At least two participants also shared that God taught them that forgiveness is a first step in becoming like Jesus, walking out holiness. A pastor added, “We’ve got to get the pen on paper! Let’s keep the fire of holiness burning and make sure it first consumes us.”
Additional fruit from the conference that will continue to grow with time includes a tremendous response from Philippine leaders towards forming a field literature committee. Almost every participant from the Philippines is interested to help develop literature on the field ranging from writing children’s and VBS curriculum, writing Bible studies and discipleship lessons, to creating media and video resources to communicate the solid teaching of theologians and scholars grounded in God’s Word. The PNG participants also expressed commitment to re-organize or restart their field literature committee following this conference.
It is our field and regional leadership’s prayer that more Asian Pacific leaders will hear God’s call to write and/or to develop the writing skills of those they lead. May the Lord continue to lead us forward into Christlikeness that is both a viable witness and a fruitful communication of living holiness in our varied cultural contexts. (Submitted by: Lisa Lehman, Regional Literature Coordinator)
From Texas to Vanuatu: God’s Unexpected Call
God called John and Linda Dortch in different and often unexpected ways. Our responsibility is, like Jim and Linda, to be open to His voice, to seek His direction, and to obey His call.
John & Linda Dortch
Vanuatu: It was June 2017 during the General Assembly and Conventions in Indianapolis when Linda “just happened” to sit on a bench in the Asia-Pacific Region booth. She was there to post some photos on Facebook. But while there, an Asia-Pacific missionary “just happened” to walk up and they struck up a conversation about cross-cultural ministry.
The missionary was David Potter, who with his wife Sylvia, is helping to develop the Church in the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. Later that week, the Potters met Jim and Linda and shared about the need for someone to come and teach English to pastor graduates and those working toward various certifications. Since Linda had extensive experience as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, she and Jim agreed to pray about this urgent need.
Over the next few weeks, the frequency of emails and prayers became more intense as Jim and Linda explored this possibility. They wanted to make sure that this was where God was calling them to serve. The turning point came one day when they remembered their own struggles in learning to speak Spanish. “Each time God placed a teacher, a tutor, a class, an opportunity for us to inch our way to the next footing in Spanish, we celebrated! What if these English learners in Vanuatu feel like we feel? What if they need someone to help them inch their way to their next foothold in English?”

Jim and Linda knew that God could use other people to go and teach, but they kept thinking back to the conversation that “just happened” on the bench at General Assembly. “What if WE can make a difference in the lives of pastors in Vanuatu just as our language teachers have made a difference in our lives?”
After much prayer, Jim and Linda said “Yes” to a short-term assignment! And on January 23, Jim and Linda Dortch flew to Vanuatu where they are now on a 2-month assignment as English teachers in South Pacific Nazarene Theological College. They are also helping with English Conversational groups as an outreach program for the local Nazarene church. And they “just happen” to be loving it!
God calls us in different and often unexpected ways. Our responsibility is, like Jim and Linda, to be open to His voice, to seek His direction, and to obey His call.
