Elmira’s Incredible Run to NCAA Division III Title Game Ends with 2-1 Loss to Top-Seeded Norwich

Box Score
Score: #1/2 Norwich University 2, #3/3 Elmira College 1
Records: Norwich (27-1-3), Elmira (25-3-2)
Location: Kreitzberg Arena – Northfield, Vt.
NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- After knocking off the four-time defending NCAA Champions in two overtime periods the previous night, the No. 3/3-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team was unable to complete its incredible journey to capture the program's fourth national title, as the Soaring Eagles fell in the championship game to top-seeded Norwich University on the Cadets' home ice, 2-1.
Norwich ended tonight's title game with a 28-24 advantage in shots on goal and went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Elmira's power-play unit finished 0-for-4. EC senior netminder Kelcey Crawford '18 amassed 26 saves in tonight's contest to bring her season total to 622, good enough to claim sole possession of first place in EC history for single-season saves.
Registering Elmira's lone goal this evening was CCM AHCA East Region First-Team All-American Sarah Hughson '18, who scored shorthanded for the Soaring Eagles in the second period. She ends the season with 49 points on 28 goals and 21 assists, completing an incredible senior campaign that saw the East Haddam, Connecticut, native eclipse her previous three-year point total by nine.
Both teams had a handful of chances to breakthrough for the game-opening score in the opening period, but Elmira's Crawford and Norwich's Laurie King were up for the challenge between the pipes. Crawford was forced to make 12 saves in the opening 20 minutes, several of which came from the high slot, while King turned away six shots to hold EC scoreless.
In addition to superb goaltending, both penalty-kill units did a solid job limiting opportunities from the opposition. Elmira and Norwich went on the power play twice apiece, but only one shot on goal was registered during that time – an attempt by Norwich – as both power-play units came up empty handed with the extra skater.
Amanda Conway broke the 0-0 stalemate at the 11:58 mark on a breakaway. A missed shot by Elmira turned into a tape-to-tape pass from Roby Foley to Conway, who split a pair of Elmira defensemen before snapping a wrist shot into the top right corner for the game-opening score.
Compounding Elmira's headache was a body-checking penalty on Meg Lahey '19 at 15:36, which put the Norwich power play back onto the ice. However, the extra skater did little to aid the Cadets' offense, as a phenomenal individual effort by Hughson leveled tonight's national title game at one apiece.
Following a dump into the zone, Hughson's aggressiveness on the forecheck resulted in a turnover behind the Norwich net. From there, Hughson collected the loose puck and wrapped around the goal before tucking it between the pipe and King's pads for the game-tying shorthanded score at the 16:02 mark. Elmira eventually killed the Norwich power play and Hughson's goal held up through the end of the second stanza, as the Soaring Eagles skated into the final intermission deadlocked with the Cadets, 1-1.
The third period was filled with fast-paced action as both teams raced up and down the ice. The pace of place produced nine shots on goal by Elmira and eight for Norwich.
As good as tonight's final was, a late whistle in the third period ended up being the difference, as a controversial roughing call on EC put the top-seeded Cadets on the power play with 2:14 left in regulation. Although Elmira's penalty-kill unit denied Norwich on each of its first four power-play opportunities, Sophie McGovern did not waste this chance for Cadets, as she sniped the top right corner of the goal for the game-winning score with 1:33 left on the clock. McGovern's shot came from the high slot and was assisted by Conway and Bryn Labbe.
Elmira pulled Crawford from the net in the closing minute of the contest to skate 6-on-5, but the extra boy did not yield a goal as Norwich skated away with its second national title in program history by a 2-1 final score.

Elmira College Remembers Late, Great Laura Hurd ’05 at 36th Annual Athletics Alumni Weekend
Feb. 06, 2018 Women's Ice Hockey
ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Prior to the Elmira College women's ice hockey game on Saturday, February 3, EC's Vice President of Athletics, Pat Thompson, made a special presentation to the family of the late, great Laura Hurd '05. In a pre-game ceremony, Thompson gifted a replica Laura Hurd National Player of the Year Award Trophy to Hurd's mother, Jen, and brother, Steven. The trophy was sculpted by former men's ice hockey player Michael Roche '76.
Hurd is remembered as one of the greatest players in the history of Division III women's ice hockey. She earned All-American accolades in each of her four seasons donning the Purple and Gold and still owns many collegiate records. To this date, she holds Division III records for career points (237) and assists (117), while also being tied for the most career goals (120). Hurd was also the star of Elmira's Division III National Championships during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons.
In terms of single-season accolades, Hurd's freshman campaign will go down as one of the best in the history of the sport, as she posted single-season Division III records in points (77) and goals (40). No other skater at this level has amassed more than 68 points in a single season. In addition to being a four-time All-American, Hurd was named the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Division III National Player of the Year in 2005.
Following an automobile accident that claimed her life on June 23, 2006, at the age of 24, the AHCA renamed the Division III National Player of the Year Award in honor of her transcendent play in her four seasons at Elmira. Hurd, a native of Kingston, Ontario, was posthumously placed into the ECAC Hall of Fame last April as part of the Class of 2017.

Elmira Everlasting Class Challenge
This week’s #SoaringToSuccess story heads to New York City where last week 40 Elmira College students toured various businesses, networked with professionals and alumni, and experienced the Big Apple.
The trip, organized by the Office of Career Services, started at Amazon with Mike Town ’10. The visit focused on the ever-changing world of supply chain, logistics, and customer service.
After Amazon the students headed the New York Stock Exchange thanks to alumnus Bob Basel ’80. The Soaring Eagles flew through the trading floor and some even got to met the gold-medal winning U.S. curling team who rang the opening bell that morning.
The students also split into industry specific groups, with the finance group stopping by Deutsche Bank, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and Willis Tower Watson thanks to alumni Matt Hayes ’02, John Cardente’02, and Charles “Chip” Jama ’07.
The business administration group also visited Willis Tower Watson as well as top to LinkedIn and Twitter.
Meanwhile, the healthcare group comprised of science, nursing, pre-pharmacy, and pre-med students, had a learning lunch with Brad Hover ’07 of Lodo Therapeutics, and Terri Bauer ’15 joined in the group as well. After the lunch, the group visited the Mount Sinai Health System for sessions on hospital administration, nursing, and pharmacy.
At the end of the busy day, all the students and about 20 local alumni came together for a networking event at Chelsea Piers.

Marketing Her Skills for the Future
February 16 2018
Category: Academics
Our #SoaringToSuccess student this week is international business and marketing double major, Makinsey Carolus '18. This past summer, she interned in the marketing department at the Hilliard Corporation in Elmira, New York. While nervous at first, she quickly developed new skills and played to her strengths.
Let’s hear more from Makinsey…
I absolutely loved my experience at the Hilliard Corporation because I was able to gain real world experience that will help me achieve a job in the future. I also was able to apply all the concepts I have been working on for the last three years at Elmira College to actual projects.
At first, I was nervous for the internship because Hilliard is a machinery corporation, and I did not have much knowledge in that industry. I realized this nervousness turned into a major strength because I was able to prove that I could complete the work I was given and learn about any machinery once I put my mind to it.
This experience demonstrated to me that no matter the field I go into, I will be able to tackle the task by using my marketing and international business knowledge and applying it to any scenario. At Hilliard, I had to research and work with the South African mining industry, the United States gas industry, the elevator modernization industry, braking industries, as well as international exhibitions for machinery.
Being in this position forced me to learn more about marketing and international business and proved that I can take on any industry in the future. The companies that I can apply to and work for are now endless.
I was happy for such an amazing experience that put me outside of my comfort zone, but allowed me to learn more than I ever thought I could. I am even more excited for my future when leaving Elmira College. Knowing the concepts I have learned at Elmira College and the experience at the Hilliard Corporation will help me with any job in international business and marketing.
Recruitment for the Class of 2022 is in full swing. The Office of Admissions will hold a third and final Admitted Student Day on April 7, giving those who have been accepted to EC a closer look at academics and life at EC.
