STEWARDSHIP UPDATE FOR NOVEMBER 2018By the time you read this, Commitment Sunday will have passed. Our official stewardship campaign for fiscal 2019 will be over. You will have seen presentations and videos by members and staff, featuring congregants of all ages — everybody worshipping, connecting and serving as part of your community at Hope UMC. And yet ...
If this year is like other years, and it most certainly will be based on the current tabulation of estimates at this writing, some of you won’t have gotten around to submitting your pledge yet. How did October end so quickly? That’s ok — there’s still time. Budgets will be set soon though, pre-holidays. If you’ve already submitted — superb. Thank you. If you haven’t yet, pause now and consider. Pray. Submit your pledge to Hope UMC. Instantly feel better. Aah.
See? Better already.
Let’s face it, there are few stewards as responsibly minded as our church. We have to make the dollars stretch — so we do. For those of you business-minded gurus, the ROI (return on investment) here is high. Totally worth it. Help your church. Nurture faith. Serve your community. Do what you can.
2019 is right around the corner. Thank you.

Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
What is a mega-prayer Jesus wants us to pray?
Is there something huge for which we, the people of Hope, should pray?
Of course we will continually pray for each other and for our loved ones.
Of course we will pray for God’s will to be done, on earth as in heaven.
Of course we will pray for Christ to lead us and for us to follow.
Of course we will pray for all of the missions and ministries into which we have already been called.
I (Pastor Brian) am asking us to seek God about prayer.
I am not insisting that we get this right.
I am not imagining that we have all of God’s insight.
I am assuming God will answer better than we will ask.
Here are some examples of focused prayer about really important things:
For our nation and our world to be able to talk and work together without hate.
For the unity of the UMC, our welcome of all people, and our mutual trust.
To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
For all of God’s work to be fulfilled at Hope UMC as a multi-cultural church.
Example from Escondido 1st UMC:
In the early ’60’s, I heard that the United Methodist Women of Escondido 1st Methodist Church saw that they could not remember when anyone from that church entered into ordained ministry. So they started to pray for that specifically and persistently. There are at least 16 people from Escondido 1st UMC in the 70’s who have become United Methodist pastors.
That was their mega prayer. What is ours?
We invite each other to pray and to pray about prayer. Let’s see where God leads us.
In Jesus Christ,
Pastor Brian Kent
OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP FIRE VICTIMS
Alpine, California
We have received the following request:
The case managers helping fire victims want to provide metal sheds to some of the survivors of the fires in Alpine. Karl Ports is creating a team of 5-10 San Diego County volunteers who would be willing to help construct the sheds as well as be part of the ongoing efforts to build ramps, work on landscaping, and erect retaining walls over the next six months. No special training is
required.

MUSIC NOTESThis month in the worship ...
It’s hard to believe that it’s already November!
Come and worship with us all month! We are
celebrating Preschool Sunday at the 10:45 service on Nov. 4, and we’ll hear the preschool children sing at the beginning of the service! In honor of loved ones who have passed away in the last year, we will have a video presentation with pictures, scripture, and music at all three services this All-Saints weekend, Nov. 3-4. The band will play
“Cry Out to Jesus” and the choirs will be doing an anthem based on the 23th Psalm. On Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 10-11, the Flutes of the Spirit flute choir will perform at 9am & 10:45, the SNA band will do a piece called “A Mighty Fortress,” and the Hope Korean Community will join us for worship at 10:45 in honor of their 2-year anniversary here at Hope! We will have a flute & clarinet duet by Claire Jones & Geoff Gaebe on Nov. 18, and at the end of the month a vocal duet by Deb Sweeney & Frank Welts will be shared.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Getting Ready for December!
Just a sneak peak at what’s happening next
month... Along with the SNA band and choirs and our very own accompanist, Beth Jones - look for the Hope Ringers handbell choir, a piano 4-hand duet, a cellist & violinist, a harpist & flautist, our Quartet Nouveau string quartet, Select Brass brass quintet, and a guest organist - all in the month of December! Come and worship with us, feel God’s presence through music, and find hope
this Christmas season.
Yuletide is Coming Soon!
This year the Yuletide Choir is sharing “The
Twelve Songs of Christmas” in 3 special programs the weekend of December 7, 8, and 9.
Come and enjoy 80+ singers and instrumentalists share Christmas music through scripture, words of encouragement, and fun festive musical arrangements that will help give you a feeling that the Christmas season has begun! Representing many generations, lots of music, different variations of instruments, and through narration, this Yuletide will give you an opportunity to not only enjoy the evening, but also to find support and encouragement for the coming year in a special way.
Performance dates:
Friday, Dec. 7 • 7:30pm • reception to follow
Saturday, Dec. 8 • 5:00pm • special Christmas
dinner to follow (RSVP in November)

CCS Composer Festival - NEW TIME!
CCS - Carry the Cross through Song - Composer
Festival is moving to a new month! Join us on
February 8-10, and experience church choral
music in a very special way! What is CCS? It is a chance to share Christ through music and outreach. It is an event that invites choral directors and church singers from southern CA and surrounding states to come together to find and sing through new music freshly written by composers that are also invited to come and share their music. All of the music we sing through has potential to be picked for the upcoming year. A lot of the anthems you hear in worship have been picked from events like this. The composers for our 5th CCS Composer Festival are: Larry Shackley and Patti Drennan. Look them up online and learn about them. Brad Nix will also return as our Master of Ceremonies, and JWPepper - a music distribution company - will sponsor the entire weekend.
Schedule:
Friday, Feb. 8: concert rehearsal 7-9
Saturday, Feb. 9: Director Reading session 8am-3pm
Sunday, Feb. 10: Composers in worship 9 &
10:45 • Concert 2:00pm • Reception to follow
Join us and sing in the CCS Choir!
If you want to be a singer in the CCS composer festival, rehearsals start on January 10 at 7:30pm.
We will have 5 Thursday rehearsals together to learn the pieces that we will sing in the concert which will be the finale for the event on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2:00pm in the sanctuary. Please contact Wendy Kallen at wendy.kallen@hopeumc.com or Ginny Lorenz at 1+858-354-3939.
MISSIONS CORNER
Some time ago I read a piece by writer Harold Kohn entitled “Let’s Do Our Christmas Thinking Early.”
In it he encourages his readers to consider the meaning of the coming holiday season and set our priorities accordingly, focused on coming in touch with the holy ourselves, honoring God’s gift of Jesus Christ, and responding to that gift by sharing God’s love
and goodness with others. In the midst of the
busy-ness of the season, we are called into joy and generosity! In that spirit, Hope Missions and Outreach committee invites you into the following opportunities:
Alternative Christmas, Nov. 10 and 11. Explore many mission opportunities through Hope UMC and take home a holiday gift that speaks to specific needs in our own community and abroad. Contact Sharon Wade, coordinator, if you can volunteer to help this event happen after worship on the 10th or 11th.
Food bags for Thanksgiving. Take home a red bag, fill it with the items listed, and add a Von’s gift card (not a check please) for families to complete their holiday meal. (You may also donate a Von’s gift card separately if an entire food bag is not possible).
Please return your red bag by Nov. 10 or 11, thank you!
November special offering. This month’s offering will go to the Good Neighbor Center, housed in Christ Ministry Center in Normal Heights. Your donations of food and financial support help our San Diego neighbors with basic needs throughout the year, thank you for this essential ministry!
Specific requests: twin sheets, blankets, laundry soap, and trash bags for Christ Ministry Center in Normal Heights, which is helping refugees who are here legal and seeking asylum.
This year let’s do our Christmas thinking early and see where God can lead us in this holy, special time of year! Thank you ahead of time for your generosity! (Carol Millspaugh and Terry Sieck for Missions and Outreach Committee)
BREAKFAST WITH SANTA!Saturday, December 1st
9:00am-11:00am
Mark your calendars for this fun event that is back by popular demand! Designed especially for families with children (but “big kids” will like it too!), this morning event will feature a pancake breakfast with all the trimmings. Children will enjoy music selected just for them, photos with Santa, and a very special telling of the true Christmas Story. Cost is $5/person; kids ages 2 and younger are free. Get your tickets
on the patio beginning Nov. 10-11. Would you like to help with this event? Contact Kathy Askins at 1+858-566-9043.
NEW GROUP FOR GRADES 3-5
345 Bond is for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders and is a fun way to stay connected to church and each other.
Each meeting there will be games, crafts or fun activities and a brief discussion that helps us learn a little more about ourselves and our relationship with God. Then we wrap up with pizza, so please bring $5 to help pay for it, if you can. If you have food allergies, please bring dinner from home.
Stacy Mitchell will lead the meetings throughout the year on Thursday evenings from 5 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. in the children’s S.S. room J1. Mark your calendars for the following dates:
November 1st & 15th; December 6th; January 10th & 24th; February 7th; March 7th & 21st; April 4th & 25th; May 9th & 23rd. Please feel free to bring a 3rd-4th-5th grade friend! Questions?
Contact Kathy Askins at katstrich@sbcglobal.net or 1+858-566-9043 or Carrie Jaquess-Gutman cm-jaquess@yahoo.com or 1+858-353-0447. Parents, we’ll need one volunteer to assist for each meeting; please let Kathy or Carrie know if you can help!
ADVENT ACTIVITIES, DEC. 1-2
Advent, the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Day, begins the weekend of Dec. 1-2. All children, toddlers through 5th graders, will want to be present in their Kids Alive and Sunday School classes this weekend! We will have Advent Calendars to distribute to the children, and each family will have an opportunity to make an Advent
Wreath to take home for use in their family devotional time during Advent. Advent Wreaths will be made during the Saturday night Kids Alive class and between services on Sunday. So if you usually attend church at 10:45, try to come at 10:00 so your family can take home an Advent Wreath!Kid’s Stuff

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME ...
We love your children and are so glad you bring them to Church! In an effort to keep everyone – children, parents, teachers, and childcare providers – healthy and to minimize exposure to germs as we enter the cold and flu season, we are observing these policies regarding children’s classes and childcare at
Hope. Thank you for your understanding.
• Has shown, in the past 24 hours, any symptoms: fever, rash, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, runny nose, pink eye, ear pain, sore throat.
• Obvious signs of illness (runny nose or eyes), your child will not be permitted to stay in the Nursery/class, even if the discharge is clear.
• Becoming symptomatic while in the Nursery or class, you will be asked to take him/her home.
• If your child develops a dirty diaper while in the Nursery, you may be called on to change it in order to minimize the transfer of germs.
• If your child has lice at any time of year, please keep him home until the lice has been effectively treated and your child has no nits. (This is in agreement with Poway Unified School District’s “no nit” policy.)
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
If you have any questions or concerns, please
contact Dir. of Children’s Ministries Carrie Jaquess in the church office: 1+858-485-5840, x103.

ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS 2018
Sat. & Sun., November 10 & 11, before, between and after services Make your Christmas gift list and bring it to the Alternative Christmas event where you can obtain gifts for your family and friends. These gifts show your loved ones you care and help others who are in need.
Stop by the table that represents Hope for Injured Warriors and see the many helpful projects that are taking place. Perhaps you have seen or heard of some of the wonderful activities that are happening in our Youth Ministry at Hope and would like to make a donation so these programs may continue to grow. Many of our Hope family are involved in helping with the various local missions, some of which are: Camp Scholarships, the Disaster
Relief Work Team, the Gathering Spot and Prayers and Squares.
Simplify your Christmas shopping this year by finding your gifts at this event. You will be glad you did — and so will those who benefit from your generosity.
The fragrance always remains on the hand that gives the rose. (Mahatma Gandi)
A NOTE FROM SYLINA, Adult Ministries Director
We are starting a new Young Adult Fellowship the second and fourth Sunday’s of each month following second service. This group is designed for those that have graduated high school/pre-children. The group will be scripturally based while working within the needs of those involved. Please spread the word.
Journey’s Fellowship is meeting Nov. 2nd, 8th, and 16th from 4:30 to 5:30pm in the church library.
Our fellowship includes Bible study, music, and crafts. We will be making gifts for Alternative Christmas this month and welcome anyone that would like to join us. Our fellowship just celebrated two birthdays this month for Tracy and Taylor, so if you see them say Happy Birthday! Pastor Brian and Sylina Kidd will be training Journeys to become ushers and greeters soon.
