Hope Rising 2018 raises $133,000!

Hope Rising, held on October 6, raised funds critical to the ongoing work of the Center for Justice & Reconciliation. It was a beautiful day featuring the resiliency of survivors.

The Beauty for Ashes Scholarship Fund, for survivors of human trafficking, and our other initiatives, depend on the support of our donors. This year's results are an important step toward our overall fundraising goals. Thank you for your ongoing support and generosity!
The Hope Rising 2018 video gave an update on the work of the CJR and featured Jessica Kim, who will be graduating from PLNU on December 15, 2018.
Join us for Loma Talks Saturday, November 17th
The needs around us are great, but we can all have a role in impacting our world. Come hear from a group of alums who are working toward change — from the alums who helped launch PLNU's scholarship for survivors of human trafficking to alums working for healthier communities and those using art to change hearts and minds — we have a rich resource of PLNU alumni who are finding innovative ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Border Pilgrimage - A Closer Look
30 students and staff spent a weekend in September examining the complexity of living in a border region. Students heard from a variety of perspectives that included the challenges of border security, the plight of migrants and the reality of Tijuana's thriving sex economy.

In October, we combined our Churches Against Trafficking meeting with our Brewed Awakening event and welcomed Jessa Crisp. Jessa is the woman who inspired the Beauty for Ashes Scholarship at PLNU, and the co-founder of BridgeHope, an organization that is working to bring awareness to trafficking and exploitation and support survivors.
From left to right, Dr. Jamie Gates, Jessa Crisp, Kim Berry Jones and Michelle Shoemaker. Gates, Jones and Shoemaker launched the scholarship in 2014.
On October 27, PLNU students served as coaches to teams of high school students at the SmartCity Saturday Hackathon. Tackling one of the city's greatest challenges - the recruitment of youth into sex trafficking - student teams came up with innovative solutions and pitched them to a team of city leaders who served as judges. PLNU graduating senior Jessica Kim was the keynote speaker and on the panel of judges.

PLNU sophmore and CJR Intern Finley Still said, "I was honored to be a coach at SmartCity Saturday. I loved learning about the students on my team and watching them share their ideas together. The students were so smart and I was extremely impressed with their attitudes, rhetoric, and ability to come up with a strong plan. It was well worth my Saturday and would love to be apart of more events like this."

How the San Diego Community is Supporting Migrants
Safe Harbors Network helps churches and individuals support migrants with short-term shelter

This year the Safe Harbors Network was launched with the goal of connecting people of faith and other organizations to provide short-term shelter to documented immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.
The Safe Harbors Network is a coalition of individuals, congregations and organizations who care about refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, migrants in detention and families broken by deportation.
The purpose of Safe Harbors is to connect these vulnerable populations with those who are willing to provide safe shelter and basic needs for a defined time. It is not a "sanctuary" program. The Network supports churches and individuals who are interested in providing short-term shelter with resources to best help them support migrants and to assist migrants with becoming fully self-sufficient.

If you would like more information about how you or your church can help, go to the Safe Harbors Network site here.
