From Pastor Molly: Singing Together
Sometimes in worship, especially during the music, I think of the people with whom I've sung these same songs before. And sometimes, I believe I can hear the voices of those saints who've gone on before, singing with us still.
I imagine this powerful, heavenly choir that sings the songs of our faith along with us when we worship here in Redondo Beach. All creation joins in these salvation songs:
Mortals, join the mighty chorus which the morning stars began;
Love divine is reigning o'er us, binding all within its span.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife;
joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.
("Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee," verse 4)
Today is All Saints Day, and this Sunday during worship we will speak the names and remember the lives of some of the people who have died this past year. In our worship, we not only only mourn their absence, but celebrate their belonging with us still. With joy and by the power of God's eternal love, we get to sing together as if in a heavenly choir here on earth. At the communion table, we taste the grace that saves us. In our community, the saints become present. May their lives continue to light our way forward, and may we live without fear into a hope that cannot end.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
This Sunday, there will be a potluck lunch after the 10:30 service--I hope you'll join us! There's a time change on Sunday, so you can get an extra hour of sleep, too.

All Saints Sunday:
"Close to the Kingdom"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Mark 12:28-34
Mark 12:28 One of the Torah-teachers came up and heard them engaged in this discussion. Seeing that Yeshua answered them well, he asked him, “Which is the most important mitzvah of them all?” 29 Yeshua answered, “The most important is,
‘Sh’ma Yisra’el, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad [Hear, O Isra’el, the Lord our God, the Lord is one], 30 and you are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your understanding and with all your strength.’[Mark 12:30 Deuteronomy 6:4–5]
31 The second is this:
‘You are to love your neighbor as yourself.’[Mark 12:31 Leviticus 19:18]
There is no other mitzvah greater than these.” 32 The Torah-teacher said to him, “Well said, Rabbi; you speak the truth when you say that he is one, and that there is no other besides him; 33 and that loving him with all one’s heart, understanding and strength, and loving one’s neighbor as oneself, mean more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Yeshua saw that he responded sensibly, he said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And after that, no one dared put to him another sh’eilah. (Complete Jewish Bible).
Mark 12:28-34.
Verse 28
[28] And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
Which is the first commandment? — The principal, and most necessary to be observed. Matthew 22:34; Luke 10:25.
Verse 29
[29] And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
The Lord our God is one Lord — This is the foundation of the first commandment, yea, of all the commandments. The Lord our God, the Lord, the God of all men, is one God, essentially, though three persons. From this unity of God it follows, that we owe all our love to him alone. Deuteronomy 6:4.
Verse 30
[30] And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
With all thy strength — That is, the whole strength and capacity of thy understanding, will, and affections.
Verse 31
[31] And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
The second is like unto it — Of a like comprehensive nature: comprising our whole duty to man. There is no other moral, much less ceremonial commandment, greater than these. Leviticus 19:18.
Verse 33
[33] And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
To love him with all the heart — To love and serve him, with all the united powers of the soul in their utmost vigour; and to love his neighbour as himself - To maintain the same equitable and charitable temper and behaviour toward all men, as we, in like circumstances, would wish for from them toward ourselves, is a more necessary and important duty, than the offering the most noble and costly sacrifices.
Verse 34
[34] And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.
Jesus said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God — Reader, art not thou? then go on: be a real Christian: else it had been better for thee to have been afar off. (The John Wesley's Explanatory Notes).

Bob Peterson
Bob Peterson's popular column for the Mainsail has found new life, online! Read his view from the pews about church life and community news. You'll enjoy keeping up with the many good things happening in our congregation! by Bob Peterson
Last Sunday at the 10:30 Worship Service I was watching Church Organist Mary Ann Stickler move quickly from the organ keyboard consul to the grand piano keyboard to perform the postlude and I wondered how many of you know that the electronic organ has the ability, by pushing the correct buttons, to produce a piano sound, but it's not a real piano. Then, when Cris Monarch leaves his electronic keyboard in the praise band, it too has the ability to sound like a piano, but it too is not a real piano. Someday, we may have three people all playing piano from the three keyboards, who knows?
Also, last Sunday, young Carrie Potter, Granddaughter of David and Nancy Klinger led the singing for the Prayer Song, “Healer of Our Every Ill.” My, how time flies. It seems only a few months ago she was an Acolyte and now she is singing with and leading the choir and doing it very well, indeed.
A good friend of many of our congregation, Church Custodian Arnie Sachs has resigned his position and will end his job here November 6th, 2018. Arnie has taken an interest in many individuals here and has helped all of us at one time or other by arranging rooms for meetings, cleaning our messes and in general keeping our church campus clean and ready for visitors. When he came to us, applying for the job after Bob Crownover left, many thought no one could surpass Bob, but Arnie has done much to find his place at our church. He will be missed by all of us, especially at Rummage Sale time and other spots on our calendar.` Good luck, Arnie, no matter which way life takes you. For the past three or four years, Arnie has been the guest of our twice monthly Mens Breakfast, so that group will miss him as well. Perhaps now the occasional confusion over Ernie Valenzuela and Arnie Sachs will be over.
See you at the potluck Sunday at noon, November 4th

Thursday, November 1, 2018 - Music Notes
Music Director, Jim Raycroft, will
share upcoming worship music
selections and a little bit of history, too. by Jim Raycroft
In the upcoming weeks, we will be enjoying Stacy Park again, who will be singing a blues tune called One Less Stone, and the Eversons – Lauren and Stuart – who will sing a duet called Giving My Best. They were supposed to sing it a while back, but Lauren got sick and we had to do a last minute substitution for her.
Back in the spring, we were contacted by an organization in New York called Distinguished Concerts. They had heard a recording of our choir on the net and invited us to join a mass choir to sing a concert at Carnegie Hall. Due to scheduling, we weren’t all able to go, but we will be represented by George and Peggy Mercer, Nancy Klinger and Carrie Potter, Kristin Harper and Irina Goncar. It will feature a 250 voice massed choir and a full orchestra. It will include the music of Mark Hayes, who will not only conduct the concert, but has written a brand new piece that they will premiere at the concert. The concert is on Thanksgiving weekend, so we’ll miss them at church that Sunday, but I suppose that if they have to be away, singing at Carnegie Hall is an OK reason. Be sure to ask them about the concert.
Howard Goodall is an English composer of choral music and music for the stage, screen and TV (including The Vicar of Dibley and Mr. Bean). In 1994, he was approached to write the theme for the new series The Vicar of Dibley, a very funny show starring Dawn French, who was also seen as the portrait of The Fat Lady in the Harry Potter movies. He thought that a setting of a familiar sacred text, and the use of some real choral singing (as opposed to 2 singers in a studio layering their voices to get an ensemble effect), would offset perfectly the quirky humor of the storylines. He’d also been wanting to write a setting of Psalm 23 for some time, and fortunately, the producers loved the idea. Thanks to the enormous popularity of the Vicar of Dibley, he’s contributed a fresh new setting of the 23rd Psalm that is known around the world. In fact, in the UK and Australia, his melody is pretty much the only one that people under 30 know. This week, we get to hear it led by our own Carrie Potter.
Hal Hopson is a composer of choral music from Cedar Park, Texas. He has over 3000 pieces of music in publication, and has been on the board of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians and The Choristers Guild. His specialty, at least it seems to me, is editing pieces of classical works for church choirs. Quite often church choirs don’t have the resources to handle larger works – either they don’t have enough voices for the divisi or they don’t have singers with the range necessary. He takes pieces that might be just out of reach and makes them accessible. Every Easter Sunday, we sing the Hallelujah Chorus. What most people don’t know is that we use his version as the foundation, a version he calls “The Practical Version”, which is all the same notes, but the whole piece is taken down a tone, which makes it easier for the sopranos to sing (it gets really high near the end).
