The Redondo Beach, California, United States for Thursday, 8 November 2018 1st United Methodist Church eNews: Saturday Night on Broadway. Sunday Worship at 8:30 and 10:30.

For good reasons, we invite you to give generously. And come Saturday for our auction & variety show!
First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach
From Pastor Molly: For Good Reasons
This month, during our annual stewardship campaign, we want to thank you for being a part of the generous community of people whose giving to the church makes amazing ministry possible.

There are so many good reasons why people give to the church: your generosity to the church helps make life-changing ministry possible. Your faithful giving also demonstrates your faithfulness to God. You know how giving changes us, and what a joy it is to be able to give back to God and the community.

During worship in November, church leaders will be sharing some of their good reasons for giving to the church. Together as a congregation, we are committed to living out God’s love. We care for one another as a Christian community, we learn to serve and grow our faith, and we respond to needs locally and throughout the world.

In 2 Corinthians, the apostle Paul challenges the church in Corinth to step up in generosity. He stirs up competition, describing the incredible generosity of the Macedonian church. Then, he puts his trust in their discernment: “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion.” He continues: “for God loves a cheerful giver.” His description makes it clear God invites us to choose generosity because it gives life not only to the recipient but also the one who gives. We give to be a part of God’s good work in the world, and it changes us, too.

Your generosity in giving to the church enables such good things to happen. It supports our dedicated church staff, contributes to the church beyond our walls through our conference apportionment, enables our facility to host ministries for the community, and further extends the ministries of the church to the next generations.

Now is a time when we need people to give generously to help us end 2018 well, and to make commitments about what you can give in 2019. I hope you will consider making a pledge of giving to the church for next year, for all kinds of good reasons. You can read more or make a pledge online.

Grace and peace,

I also hope you'll come make our Night on Broadway event a great success, this Saturday evening from 5-8pm at the church. We have an incredible list of donated items in our silent auction, and great list of performers in our Variety Show! There will be great food trucks in our parking lot to buy dinner and dessert from, and free kids activities, too. Admission to the event is free. All are welcome!

"What's More?"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Mark 12:38-44
Mark 12:38 As he taught them, he said, “Watch out for the kind of Torah-teachers who like to walk around in robes and be greeted deferentially in the marketplaces, 39 who like to have the best seats in the synagogues and take the places of honor at banquets, 40 who like to swallow up widows’ houses while making a show of davvening at great length. Their punishment will be all the worse!”
41 Then Yeshua sat down opposite the Temple treasury and watched the crowd as they put money into the offering-boxes. Many rich people put in large sums, 42 but a poor widow came and put in two small coins. 43 He called his talmidim to him and said to them, “Yes! I tell you, this poor widow has put more in the offering-box than all the others making donations. 44 For all of them, out of their wealth, have contributed money they can easily spare; but she, out of her poverty, has given everything she had to live on.” (Complete Jewish Bible).
Mark 12:38-44

Verse 38

[38] And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,
Beware of the scribes — There was an absolute necessity for these repeated cautions. For, considering their inveterate prejudices against Christ, it could never be supposed the common people would receive the Gospel till these incorrigible blasphemers of it were brought to just disgrace. Yet he delayed speaking in this manner till a little before his passion, as knowing what effect it would quickly produce. Nor is this any precedent for us: we are not invested with the same authority. Matthew 23:5Luke 20:46.

Verse 41

[41] And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
He beheld how people cast money into the treasury — This treasury received the voluntary contributions of the worshippers who came up to the feast; which were given to buy wood for the altar, and other necessaries not provided for in any other way. Luke 21:1.

Verse 43

[43] And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
I say to you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all — See what judgement is cast on the most specious, outward actions by the Judge of all! And how acceptable to him is the smallest, which springs from self-denying love! (The John Wesley's Explanatory Notes).

News From Our Members
This Saturday, November 10, our church celebrates with “A Night On Broadway” from 5 to 8 PM in the Fellowship Hall and Parking Lot. It features a Talent Show, Silent Auction and Food Trucks. But, the most amazing thing that will happen is the Silent Auction. I counted (roughly) some nearly 90 (Ninety) Items ready to e auctioned to the highest bidder. This includes restaurant meals and everything else from Tickets to the L. A. Philharmonic at Disney Hall in downtown L. A. to a book about Winnie The Pooh. You name it and they'll have it. This absolutely amazing list of items has something for everyone both here in the South Bay and in greater L. A. County. You'll be bound to find something you can use, enjoy or give away at Christmas. I did a little asking around and it seems as if this list was primarily gathered up by the modest Ellyn Kielb and, she says, her team. But she is responsible for all these items and there will be more at the Saturday event. Even if you don't buy, bring friends and they will gather up a few items with our church being supported from the money...

Last Sunday we were entertained (inspired) musically by the voices of Rick McCandless and Herb Nomura of our choir who sang, as a duet, “Gift of Love”. We also heard Carrie Potter sing again as she led our choir in music to the words of the 23rd Psalm.
I also was pleased to hear Pastor Molly Vetter refer to the late senior members of our congregation and their impact on this church during their lives here. It was Francie Norton who bought and paid for a replacement church bell which is rung every Sunday to remind people we are here in this community to serve all who will come, She also recognized Don Diers for his service to our church and our country as a World War II Veteran and Joy Slothouer who, with her electric scooter was seen around the neighborhood doing her thing. You and I shall miss them. As we remembered those lost this past year, we recalled All Saint's Day and remembered so many of our forebearers.
Molly's scripture last Sunday referred to our Lord's ways of reminding people that there is a way to disagree without being disagreeable; See Mark 12: 28-34.
Wasn't that a very special Pot-Luck luncheon last Sunday? There must have been nearly 150 people enjoying the food and visiting with friends as they also made new friends, See you at the next Pot-Luck set for Sunday, December 2, 2018.
Now, if I may take a personal privilege, Today is November 11th, formerly Armistice Day, now called Veterans Day. I have attended many such observances during my life but the one in Hermosa Beach today (Sunday) at 5 PM is special to me. I have been invited to be the speaker for the event which is set for 5 PM to 8PM at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Pier Avenue by the Community Center Building's East Side. All are welcome should you wish to remember family or friends who served our nation or are doing so currently. It's a beautiful Military Memorial and usually a very nice service and is a time to remember both the living Vets and those who gave their lives for our country by serving.

For Good Reasons:
2019 Stewardship Campaign
There are lots of good reasons to make financial gifts to the church. This fall, we hope you will consider making both generous contributions to our 2018 ministries, and a pledge of giving support for 2019.

All month during worship, some of our church members will share reasons why giving to the church is important to their faith and to our community. You should receive more information about making a pledge in the mail--you can read more online, too. Please prayerfully consider participating in this Stewardship Campaign!
Our annual church budget is approximately $500,000. These funds allow us to have an incredible staff, maintain our facility as a home for ministries, support the work of the church beyond our walls and more. Most of our budget support comes directly from your tithes and offerings.

Celebrating 26 Years of Shared Bread at Thanksgiving
On Sunday, November 18, as we celebrate Thanksgiving Sunday, we will also celebrate the 26th Anniversary of Shared Bread. This ministry has offered a free meal to hungry people in our community every Wednesday night. We are grateful to the many volunteers, other churches, community groups, farmers and stores whose contributions make this meal possible.

During this interim, we're especially grateful for your help, pitching in to take care of our campus. We encourage you to welcome Patrick when you see him around the church!
