ADVOCACY ALERT
We are on the cusp of finally making the FIRST STEP Act law and need your voice once more to make it happen. Please send a letter to your members of Congress today!Yesterday, I was privileged to be at the White House to represent Prison Fellowship as the president announced his support for an amended version of the FIRST STEP Act alongside Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, law enforcement officials, faith leaders, and prominent conservative and progressive groups.
The FIRST STEP Act expands transformative programs for incarcerated men and women and increases earned- and good-time credit opportunities so people can come home to their families sooner.
Your advocacy is the reason the U.S. House of Representatives passed this legislation 360 to 59 in May. The bill has been stalled in the Senate, but for a good cause. Sen. Chuck Grassley and Sen. Dick Durbin D-Ill., negotiated to include sentencing amendments, and now these new provisions, which will restore more proportional sentencing for federal drug offenses, are backed by the president, law enforcement, and the House sponsors of FIRST STEP Act.
This bipartisan deal is being reviewed by your senators right now. It needs to be voted on by the Senate, and because of the new sentencing provisions, it will also need to be sent back to the House for final approval. It’s a legislative roller coaster ride, but we are so close!
Through your continued resolve and persistent advocacy, we may just be able to deliver a Christmas miracle to the families with loved ones incarcerated in the federal system.
Will you put your faith into action? You can send a letter to your representative and senators in less than two minutes. Write your members of Congress today.
Thank you for partnering with us to advance justice that restores.
Sincerely,
Craig DeRoche
Vice President of Advocacy & Public Policy
