Sunday's Sermon & Scripture:
"Parts to Play"
1 Corinthians 12:4-11
Scripture Text:
1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. 5 Also there are different ways of serving, but it is the same Lord being served. 6 And there are different modes of working, but it is the same God working them all in everyone. 7 Moreover, to each person is given the particular manifestation of the Spirit that will be for the common good. 8 To one, through the Spirit, is given a word of wisdom; to another, a word of knowledge, in accordance with the same Spirit; 9 to another, faith, by the same Spirit; and to another, gifts of healing, by the one Spirit; 10 to another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the ability to judge between spirits; to another, the ability to speak in different kinds of tongues; and to yet another, the ability to interpret tongues. 11 One and the same Spirit is at work in all these things, distributing to each person as he chooses.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for 1 Corinthians 12:4-11
Verse 4
[4] Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit — Divers streams, but all from one fountain. This verse speaks of the Holy Ghost, the next of Christ, the sixth of God the Father. The apostle treats of the Spirit, 1 Corinthians 12:7, etc.; of Christ, 1 Corinthians 12:12, etc.; of God, 1 Corinthians 12:28, etc.
Verse 5
[5] And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
Administrations — Offices. But the same Lord appoints them all.
Verse 6
[6] And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
Operations — Effects produced. This word is of a larger extent than either of the former. But it is the same God who worketh all these effects in all the persons concerned.
Verse 7
[7] But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
The manifestation — The gift whereby the Spirit manifests itself.
Is given to each — For the profit of the whole body.
Verse 8
[8] For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
The word of wisdom — A power of understanding and explaining the manifold wisdom of God in the grand scheme of gospel salvation.
The word of knowledge — Perhaps an extraordinary ability to understand and explain the Old Testament types and prophecies.
Verse 9
[9] To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
Faith may here mean an extraordinary trust in God under the most difficult or dangerous circumstances. The gift of healing need not be wholly confined to the healing diseases with a word or a touch. It may exert itself also, though in a lower degree, where natural remedies are applied; and it may often be this, not superior skill, which makes some physicians more successful than others. And thus it may be with regard to other gifts likewise. As, after the golden shields were lost, the king of Judah put brazen in their place, so, after the pure gifts were lost, the power of God exerts itself in a more covert manner, under human studies and helps; and that the more plentifully, according as there is the more room given for it.
Verse 10
[10] To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
The working of other miracles. Prophecy — Foretelling things to come.
The discerning — Whether men be of an upright spirit or no; whether they have natural or supernatural gifts for offices in the church; and whether they who profess to speak by inspiration speak from a divine, a natural, or a diabolical spirit.
Verse 11
[11] But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
As he willeth — The Greek word does not so much imply arbitrary pleasure, as a determination founded on wise counsel.
Sermon Stories "ALL Have Gifts" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 30 August 2015 with Scripture 1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit gives them.
There is always so much discussion over these God-given gifts while some people complain that they do not have gifts similar to other people in the spotlight. Yet, God through the Apostle Paul has simply said that all people have gifts to build up Jesus church. It is not dependant of skills or even intellectual abilities, but all people have gifts to build up the church and even society to be more of a God-loving people with each other. Anybody who have seriously been around people who have inellectually impairments we know this is true. I am reminded of a young woman who has a diagnosis of down symdrome at SD First United Methodist Churcch who had so mcuh love for Jesus that at times she stood up and danced with joy for God alone. Then, there is the young woman who recently graduated from Point Loma Naarene University with a call into Christian ministry even though she has minor cerebral palsy desires to bring light into the lcal churches that all people especially people who are differently abled have gifts to build up the church. How do we really view people who are differently abled? How do we look upon the parents who have children who are differently thinking they have more of God's grace than other people? How do we understand how God gives each of His grace to love and support each other? Than there are the immigrants who come to this country to escape poverty or gangs seeking employment to benefit their families here and abroad who have gifts to give Gods church? Then there are people who happen to be LGBTQ who offer their gifts back into the church even if they are in a life time committment with a same sex partner or even choose to remain celebrate from a gift of God. There is still my son, James, who has always been intellectually impaired since birth with some minor physical problems being contributed to him further by an automobile hitting him when he was 15 years of ages. My son has always had a gift of creativity and drawing and thinking how a church building should be used for God's glory. He also has gifts to help when people allow him to help. He also has a gift of envouragement through his sharing his thoughts on a sermon even if in a worship service he yells Preach it Pastor or Amen or Hallejulah. How have you reacted to people who are differently abled in using their God-given gifts to build His church for His glory to be seen. In case you have sinned against God in your attitude or treatment of people who are differently abled, we come to receive from God His Mercy as we take and eat His Body and drink His Blood through the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. We come to receive God's mercy singing the hymn "Now Thank We All Our God" by Martin Rinkart; Translated by Catherine Winkworth
1. Now thank we all our God,
with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done,
in whom this world rejoices;
who from our mothers' arms
has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today.
2. O may this bounteous God
through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts
and blessed peace to cheer us;
and keep us still in grace,
and guide us when perplexed;
and free us from all ills,
in this world and the next.
3. All praise and thanks to God
the Father now be given;
the Son, and him who reigns
with them in highest heaven;
the one eternal God,
whom earth and heaven adore;
for thus it was, is now,
and shall be evermore.

Hymnal found in the flooded sanctuary of Hartzell Mt Zion UMC after Hurricane Katrina
Signs of Hope and Assurance
This weekend marks the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's devastating landfall in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast.
Not long after the storm surge waters had receded, I visited the affected area with a small team from my church. One of the places we were able to be of assistance was at Hartzell Mt Zion UMC in Slidell, Louisiana. Four of us who'd come from San Diego met up with a man who was caretaker of the church property, and we helped him removed badly damaged furnishings from their sanctuary. As we were working, we found a hymnal that had fallen open in the storm, showing us two beautiful songs: "Dona Nobis Pacem (Give us Peace)", and "There is a Balm in Gilead." One sings of a prayer for peace, and the other offers affirmation that God's healing comes in the most broken places.
A photo of this hymnal hangs in my office--it is, for me, a reminder that God is present and offers hope and assurance. That promise comes even in the midst of the storm itself.
I am unsettled by violence in our country, most recently the shooting of a news reporter and cameraman in Virginia. I am bothered by violence in our own region, and heartbroken to read the names of those murdered in our county.
I am mindful of those who face challenges and griefs that cannot be "fixed."
In the midst of it all, I am reminded of the songs that Hurricane Katrina sang for me, and given assurance that there is, by the grace of God, a balm in Gilead. It makes the wounded whole.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

Fall Sermon Series and Study: First
Putting God First in Faith and Finances

During the month of September, our church will hear about God's generosity and our response as we experience our stewardship program, first: putting GOD first in living and giving, developed by author and pastor Mike Slaughter of Ginghamsburg Church. There will be opportunities in worship, in small groups, in youth and children's classes, and in devotions that can be used at church or at home.
We are made in God's image and are meant to be creators of life and hope, not the consumers of our culture's shiny gods. We have the ability to change the world and create a legacy that will live forever in the lives of generations to follow. That legacy starts when each of us takes the hard steps of financial discipline and fulfilling the call to generosity that God has placed in all of us. Read more here...

Devotional and Study Books Available:
Make this Study even more meaningful by using the four-week daily devotional or study book that accompany it. Both books areavailable online or in the church office: The Devotional (First - Devotional) is available for $7, and the Study Book (Shiny Gods: finding freedom from things that distract us) is available for $11.

What Will Happen?

What Will Happen? by Johnna Kosnoff
“The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: 'If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But...the good Samaritan reversed the question: 'If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?”[Martin Luther King Jr.]
We can ask ourselves “If I become more involved in my church, what will happen to me?” I think something great happens to people who are involved in church – friendships develop, faith grows deeper, communities broaden.... However, we can also ask, “If I do not become more involved in my church, what will happen to my church?”
Last year the membership committee (along with a lot of input from Molly and the staff) developed the Skills and Interest Questionnaire and asked you to “Check Into Church” by checking the ministry opportunities that interested you. Because of your input, our church offered a few more Sunday morning adult education classes, started a men’s ministry group and a book club, fielded a co-ed softball team and found people who wanted to be liturgists, greeters, snack providers, Sunday School teachers, costume helpers and crafters for Advent and VBS.
Because finding our church connections enriched people, we revised the questionnaire to match our skills and interests to our 2015 church needs. If you are at least 12 years of age, please complete the new form (www.beachfaith.com/checkintochurch) to help us “set the stage” for a great year of ministry together. You may also stop by the Membership Committee table at our Ministry Fair to complete the questionnaire. Let’s see what happens to us, and to our church, when we all check in.

Youth and Children's Musical

We are looking for cast (ages 3-18) and crew (including adults, too)! There are a lot of parts, and lots of ways to be involved, and wehope you might join the fun.
For adults: We are building a team to help with the production, including sets, costumes, lighting, sound, stage management and more. Join our organizing meeting on Sunday, September 6, at 11:45am.
For youth and children: We need lots of actors for this show! We will hold regular rehearsals on Thursday evenings, and Sunday mornings and afternoons, as well as occasional other times. We encourage all kids to come to a first read-through of the show on Sunday, September 13 from11:30am-2pm. We will cast the show after the read-through.
In addition to the named characters, we will have a
-Children's Chorus: ages 3-10. This group has the fewest rehearsals.
-Elementary Ensemble: Grades 1-4. Participates in Children's Chorus songs, as well as several other pieces of the show.
More info about the show is available online.
At the show's performance on Saturday, November 14, we will also host a dinner and silent auction. Proceeds will support our church ministries--including youth and children's ministry--as well as upgrades to our theatre facilities. We are currently looking for donations of items (or baskets of items) for the auction--consider how you might be able to donate or recruit donations! Prayer Quilt Ministry:
Dyeing Workshop
Friday, August 28, 10am-noon
For our August prayer quilt meeting, Pastor Molly will lead us in a fabric dyeing workshop, teaching several resist techniques for creating patterns, including tie-dye and more.
If you wish, bring 100% cotton white fabric or a white piece of clothing to dye. Please pre-wash your fabric. More details will follow. If you do not want to dye something of your own, you can help dye some fabric to use as quilt backs.
New people are always welcome--no experience necessary.

Book Club: Sep 3, 7pm-May Day Parlor
With several new members, the club has selected as its next read, "Cry, the Beloved Country." Written by Alan Paton and published in 1948, this impassioned novel is the deeply moving story of a native pastor and his son, set against apartheid South Africa, a land and a people riven by racial injustice. Remarkable for its lyricism, unforgettable for character and incident, the book is a classic work of love and hope, courage and endurance, born of the dignity of man. The novel is available on Amazon. All are welcome. For information, contact Ann Gallaghermdgapg@verizon.net
or Laura Thatcher larzlaw@gmail.com

A Caring Community
Did you know that we have a ministry that organizes meals and other assistance for church folks in times of need? In the past, we've helped arrange rides to medical appointments, meals for people recovering from surgery, and more. Leila Grantz coordinates this ministry, using online sign-up tools. If you want to be a part of the group that she emails when there is an opportunity to help, or if you know someone who's in need of a little help, please contact the church office or Leila.
