Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Monday, 30 June 2014 "The Wounded Healer"

Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Monday, 30 June 2014 "The Wounded Healer"
Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted.  But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities, the punishment that brought us peace was upon him and by his wounds we are healed.  We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way, and The Lord has laid on him the sin of us all (Isaiah 53: 4 - 6).
Today we enter the "holy of holies" of Isaiah.  This is a passage we read every Lent during Holy Week.  Isaiah wrote it probably about the role Israel played and would play in "redemptive suffering," for humankind.  We Christians believe that while Israel was likely the focus of this passage originally, its full meaning is not limited to Israel, but is realized in the person of Jesus and his atoning work on the cross for all humanity. Redemptive suffering is a difficult notion to understand, almost beyond our comprehension, but it's true and it's central to the deepest healing of the world.
Each time I read these verses, I feel like bowing my head and my heart in gratitude and thanks, or as the great hymn says it: "Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all!" Indeed it does.
Remember, for the Sundays of July we will have only ONE worship
service - at 9:40
