A Poem: "Catch Me" by Marcia Gunnett Woodard

I remember the day I fell in love
With the whole world.
The love for them–all of them–
Poured into my soul like boiling honey.
Making me want to run
Out into the street
And stop each human who passes,
Offering to share my heart, my hugs, my words,
My “What do I have that you need?”
I want to give to you from my plenty.
Or my need.
Until you, and all the hungry, are filled.
Until our souls are overfed on the Bread of Life.
Until our faces wear radiant,
Milk of the Word mustaches.
Then…
I want us–all of us–to run hand-in-hand down the sidewalk,
To laugh and chase Jesus,
Our hearts full to overflowing with love,
And Jesus,
Running with the slow, jog-run
Of a grownup who wants to be caught by a child,
Will look back over his shoulder,
Laughing and calling, “Catch me!…Catch me!”
And we will chase him and chase him–
Laughing and loving–
Until, without quite knowing how it happened,
We all arrive…
Home.

Marcia is an accomplished playwright and a regular contributor to VISTA, the Wesleyan Church’s Sunday School paper for adults. Currently, Marcia is writing the second in a series of biblically based novels, fleshing out the “same old Bible stories” through her knowledge of human nature and the nature of God, while maintaining faithfulness to scripture, creating a style which a seminarian friend has dubbed ‘narrative theology’.
